Area coverage estimation model for directional sensor networks

Recently, directional sensor networks (DSNs) have received a great deal of attention owing to their wide range of applications in different fields. A directional sensor has a smaller angle of sensing range compared to an omni-directional sensor. coverage is one of the fundamental problems of directional sensor networks at present, which reflects how well the environment is monitored. In this paper, we propose a coverage estimation model to estimate coverage problem with boundary effect. In order to guide initial deployment of DSNs and better meet requirements with certain initial coverage probability effectively, a novel probability-based area coverage estimation model with boundary effect, named PCPMB, is proposed. Simulation results show that our proposed model outperforms the previous proposed model without boundary effect.

coverage estimation is one of the fundamental problems in sensor networks. coverage estimation in visual sensor networks (VSNs) is more challenging than in conventional 1-D (omnidirectional) scalar sensor networks (SSNs) because of the directional sensing nature of cameras and the existence of visual occlusion in crowded environments. This article represents a first attempt toward a closed-form solution for the visual coverage estimation problem in the presence of occlusions. We investigate a new target detection model, referred to as the certainty-based target detection (as compared to the traditional uncertainty-based target detection) to facilitate the formulation of the visual coverage problem. We then derive the closed-form solution for the estimation of the visual coverage probability based on this new target detection model that takes visual occlusions into account, According to the coverage estimation model, we further propose an estimate of the minimum sensor density that suffices to ensure a visual K-coverage in a crowded sensing field. Simulation is conducted which shows extreme consistency with results from theoretical formulation, especially when the boundary effect is considered. Thus, the closed-form solution for visual coverage estimation is effective when applied to real scenarios, such as efficient sensor deployment and optimal sleep scheduling.

Building controlled bilingual terminologies for the municipal domain and evaluating them using a coverage estimation approach

This article examines the status of constructed controlled terminologies from the perspective of the coverage of terms/concepts. To facilitate controlled authoring of Japanese texts of the municipal domain and promote machine translatability into English, we constructed terminologies in the following way: (1) Japanese-English term pairs are extracted from aligned texts;(2) term variations are controlled by defining preferred and proscribed terms for both languages. To assess the coverage of the constructed terminologies, we propose a quantitative extrapolation method that estimates the potential vocabulary size. The coverage estimations show that the coverage of terms for Japanese is higher than that for English by about 10%, which reflects the greater diversity of the translated English terms. The coverage of concepts reaches around 60% for both Japanese and English. The method also enables us to quantitatively estimate how much effort is needed to further increase the coverage.

The quality of service offered to customers is a concern of telecommunications providers. With this concern, the providers keep a constant monitorization on their networks so that they can immediately fix any network problems. This paper presents the cloud implementation of a propagation model calibrated with real data that allows telecommunications providers to properly plan and optimize the network. This implementation is to be added into a Self-Organizing Network tool called Metric.

This paper demonstrates a method for improving the calculation of coverage during a seabed survey mission. Called convolved coverage estimation (CCE), this method can provide the pilot with coverage information in real-time. CCE gives a conservative output and classifies less area as falsely covered when compared to using only the most likely vehicle position. A feature of this new method is that it takes into account vehicle position uncertainty. This ability to generate improved estimates of coverage is presented using field data gathered with the the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) remotely operated vehicle (ROV) Ventana in Monterey Bay, California. For a sample 15m x 15m survey, false positive coverage was reduced by 46 %.

Comprehensive and effective survey methods of coral distribution are indispensable for environmental conservation in the sea. Observation methods by divers, autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), and aerial imagery have been investigated for decades. However, effective methods in turbid water have not been developed sufficiently. In this paper, we propose a practical coral-coverage estimation method by combining an effective survey system (SSS: Speedy Sea Scanner) and a deep-learning based estimation method. We tested the performance of the proposed method in Kujuku-shima islands, Nagasaki, Japan. Experimental results showed that corals can be distinguished with accuracy of about 80% in places with relatively high transparency, and the error of coverage estimation is 10% or less.

An approach for increasing the reception robustness of mobile broadcast streaming services has been developed for mobile broadcast systems based on time-slicing, such as DVB-H, employing multi-burst FEC at link or application layer. Multiple bursts will be encoded jointly in order to overcome burst errors caused by signal level variations. The approach shows high potential which can be characterized by a link margin gain due to reduced CNR requirements to cope with fast fading and shadowing. Nevertheless, the achieved gain depends on several system parameters (encoding period and coding rate), the physical environment (correlation of shadowing and multi-path fading) and on the mobility of the users (velocity and trajectory). The paper deals with the coverage estimation and network gain due to multi-burst FEC for vehicular users in a realistic urban scenario. Since the user behavior has to be considered the gain cannot be directly included into the link budget. Thus, a methodology has been developed in order to estimate the coverage of multi-burst FEC services based on dynamic system-level simulations. Results are shown by means of simulations in realistic scenarios and field measurements in urban environments.

Fast estimation of Area-coverage for Wireless Sensor Networks Based on Digital Geometry

In this paper, we propose a fast and nearly-accurate method of estimating the area covered by a set of n identical and active sensor nodes that are randomly scattered over a 2D region. Since the estimation of collective coverage-area turns out to be computationally complex in the euclidean geometry, we represent each Euclidean circle in R-2 with a digital circle in Z(2) for enabling faster computation. Based on the underlying geometric properties of digital circles, we present a novel O(n log n)centralized algorithm and O(d(2)log d) distributed algorithm for coverage estimation, where d denotes the maximum degree of a node. In order to further expedite the estimation procedure, we approximate each digital circle by the tightest square that encloses it as well as by the largest square inscribed within it. Such approximation allows us to estimate the coverage-area, in a much simpler way, based on the intersection-geometry of a set of axis-parallel rectangles. Our experiments with random deployment of nodes demonstrate that the proposed algorithms estimate the area coverage with a maximum error of only 1.5 percent, while reducing the computational effort significantly compared to earlier work. The technique needs only simple data structures and requires a few primitive integer operations in contrast to classical methods, which need extensive floating-point computations for exact estimation. Furthermore, for an over-deployed network, the estimation provides an almost-exact measure of the covered area.

In radio access network planning and optimisation, the estimation and evaluation of cell coverage is crucial. For it, operators use several methodologies, ranging from theoretical propagation models for planning cell coverage, to drive test measurements for evaluating the performance within a cell. A novel propagation model is proposed which combines drive test measurements, cell reach statistics, antenna radiation patterns, terrain morphologies, and classical theoretical propagation models. Considering a realistic scenario of an LTE cell, the use of a classical propagation model such as Walfish-Ikegami results in an average error of -27 dB of estimations with respect to measurements, evidencing a pessimistic estimation of signal. By opposition, the proposed model fits with DT measurements.

To help telecommunication operators in their network planning, namely coverage estimation and optimisation tasks, this article presents a comparison between a semi-empirical propagation model and a propagation model generated using Artificial Intelligence (AI). These two types of propagation models are quite different in their design. The semi-empiric Automatically Calibrated Standard Propagation Model (ACSPM) is specific for an operating antenna, being calibrated every time a use case application is used and the Artificial Intelligence Propagation Model (AIPM) can be applied in different scenarios, once trained, allowing to estimate coverage for a new antenna location, using information from neighboring antennas. These models have quite different features and applicability. The ACSPM should be applied in network optimisation, when using data from the current state of the antennas. The AIPM can be used in the deployment of new antennas, as it uses data from a certain geographical area. For a better comparison of the models studied, extensive Drive Tests (DT) collection campaigns conducted by operators are used, since coverage estimations are more realistic when DTs are considered. Both models are generated using very different methodologies, but their resulting performance is very similar. The AIPM achieves a Mean Absolute Error (MAE) up to 6.1 dB with a standard deviation of 4 dB. When compared to the ACSPM we have an improvement of 0.5 dB, since this only achieves a MAE up to 6.6 dB. AIPM achieves better results and is the characterised for being completely agnostic and definition-free, when compared with known propagation models.
