optimization of piezoelectric cantilever energy harvesters including non-linear effects

This paper proposes a versatile non-linear model for predicting piezoelectric energy harvester performance. The presented model includes (i) material non-linearity, for both substrate and piezoelectric layers, and (ii) geometric non-linearity incorporated by assuming inextensibility and accurately representing beam curvature. The addition of a sub-model, which utilizes the transfer matrix method to predict eigenfrequencies and eigenvectors for segmented beams, allows for accurate optimization of piezoelectric layer coverage. A validation of the overall theoretical model is performed through experimental testing on both uniform and non-uniform samples manufactured in-house. For the harvester composition used in this work, the magnitude of material non-linearity exhibited by the piezoelectric layer is 35 times greater than that of the substrate layer. It is also observed that material non-linearity, responsible for reductions in resonant frequency with increases in base acceleration, is dominant over geometric non-linearity for standard piezoelectric harvesting devices. Finally, over the tested range, energy loss due to damping is found to increase in a quasi-linear fashion with base acceleration. During an optimization study on piezoelectric layer coverage, results from the developed model were compared with those from a linear model. Unbiased comparisons between harvesters were realized by using devices with identical natural frequencies-created by adjusting the device substrate thickness. Results from three studies, each with a different assumption on mechanical damping variations, are presented. Findings showed that, depending on damping variation, a non-linear model is essential for such optimization studies with each model predicting vastly differing optimum configurations.

Motion coordination for coverage optimization purposes in mobile networks with limited sensory range is the scope of this paper. The coordination planning is based on Voronoi tessellations by taking into consideration the sensory radius of each agent. optimization is performed in order to increase the total area covered by the network. An online directional-search algorithm is proposed in order to achieve locally optimal coverage. An agent moves inside its region of responsibility in a way that the total area surveyed by the network increases. The online control action makes the network adaptive to possible changes in the environment. Results are compared to schemes that base their action on Centroidal Voronoi Tessellations (CVT).

A Parallel Particle Swarm optimization (PPSO) algorithm using MPI is implemented to solve the coverage problem of pursuit-evasion (PE) games where multiple pursuers need to cooperate to cover an agile evader's possible escape area within reasonable time. The area to be covered is complex and thus difficult to calculate analytically. With the use of PPSO, maximum coverage is achieved in less time, given the minimum number of pursuers. The computation time can be further reduced by optimizing the fitness function based on data locality. In addition, using variable length of communication data frame performs better than fixed length in reducing inter-process communication time when the number of processors increases (more than four in the test example). Simulation results show a comparison of the speedup, the computation time before and after optimizing the fitness function, and communication time between fixed and variable data frame. Pursuers' positions and orientations are also presented to show the effectiveness of the PPSO algorithm.

In this paper we present a novel method for video cameras positioning and reconfiguration, to maximize visual coverage in complex indoor environments. Based on a suitable modeling of the camera field-of-view and of the environmental setup, the optimization procedure determines the most appropriate configuration of cameras to satisfy a coverage objective, taking into account a number of parameters on the quality of view at the camera position. This includes the global ground area coverage, the expected geometric distortion, and the entropy of the image. The proposed solution has been validated in different environmental setups, including synthetic settings, taking into account the presence of obstacles and constraints.

The wide adoption of smartphones has resulted in an exponential increase in the demand for wireless data. To address this problem, operators have started deploying large numbers of small cells. In order to operate such small cell network cost-effectively they need to be able to intelligently optimize their configuration, which can be achieved by applying machine learning techniques such as genetic programming. The use of genetic programming has previously been used to derive joint coverage algorithms for a group of enterprise femtocells. However, the evolution of the algorithms was performed in an offline manner, on a pre-defined simulation model of the deployment scenario. In this paper, an approach to perform the evolution in an online manner using an automated model building process is presented. The model building process uses network traces as inputs to create a hierarchical Markov model that is shown to be able to capture the behavior of the femtocell network well. It is shown that the resulting environment model can effectively drive the on-line evolution of coverage optimization algorithms.

This paper addresses how to optimize the radio coverage area of OFDMA femtocell networks in enterprise deployment. Considering some basic requirements of coverage, including coverage holes, coverage overlaps, area spectral efficiency (ASE) and load balancing, the coverage optimization problem is modeled as a Multiple Attribute Decision Making (MADM) problem. Then the MADM-based coverage optimization problem is solved by the Gray relation analysis (GRA) method. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can achieve a better ASE performance and effectively balance the traffic load amongst all femtocells, as well as obtaining a good tradeoff between coverage holes and coverage overlap. Meanwhile, the results of sensitive analysis also show that the coverage optimization is sensitive to the variation of weight values, and all the four attributes play an important role in the coverage optimization.

Maximizing coverage of a Single Frequency Network for Digital Television Services

This paper approaches the problem of maximising Single Frequency Network (SFN) coverage for digital terrestrial television (DTT) based on the ISDB-T standard. An important issue to face up deals with the prioritization of specific zones in the study region (of high population density) with the aim of covering the most users possible. The optimization-based approach introduces directive receiving antennas along with transmitting sector antennas to make the network more realistic. Moreover, the ITU-R P. 1546 propagation prediction method is used and applied to digital terrain maps (DTM) and the transmitters useful and interfering contributions are estimated at every receiver point within the region. The parameters to be optimized for every transmitter using the simulated annealing algorithm include static delays, the effective radiated power (ERP) and the relative azimuth orientation for sector antennas. Representative results considering a region in northern Spain with a topography similar to any coastal region in Chile surrounded by mountain ranges, are included and discussed.

Ensemble learning is a method to improve the performance of classification and prediction algorithms. Many studies have demonstrated that ensemble learning can decrease the generalization error and improve the performance of individual classifiers and predictors. However, its performance can be degraded due to multicollinearity problem where multiple classifiers of an ensemble are highly correlated with. This paper proposes a genetic algorithm-based coverage optimization technique in the purpose of resolving multicollinearity problem. Empirical results with bankruptcy prediction on Korea firms indicate that the proposed coverage optimization algorithm can help to design a diverse and highly accurate classification system.
