Grid computing technologies have played an important role in both scientific and commercial communities in recent years. Initially, grid applications were concerned principally on the storage, replication and movement of file-based data, but now they are increasingly being used in many relative areas of e-Science and e-Business. The need for data access and integration becomes widely aware. In this paper, the Muse project presents a feasible approach, which is based on the design and implementation of OGSA-DAI architecture, to facilitate scientific researchers using grid services in their collaborative work. The Muse, with an aim of providing integrated access to complex, heterogeneous and distributed data resources, mainly intends to build a high-level middleware to extend the functionalities of OGSA-DAI framework. This paper focuses primarily on access and integration of relational databases, and shows how Muse supports a demonstrated application scenario in detail.

High-level data access and integration services have been adopted as the next generation platform to share, access, transport, and manage large data collections distributed worldwide. Geospatial data is provided with complex structure and complex semantics. The importance of geospatial extension on data integration and distributed query has long been recognized a pivotal question in geospatial data storage and analysis. In this article, we discuss the key concepts behind service based data integration mechanism and geospatial query specification. We then provide geospatial extension of service based data integration with heterogeneous database platform in data grid environment. In particular, we come up with an implementation of geospatial analysis in query processing on top of data grid component. Finally, we provide object query tree to illustrate the analysis and execution of geospatial query sentence in accordance with SQL Multimedia specification. The approach of spatial data access and integration, as well as the description, deployment and invoking of data services in distributed environment will contribute a lot to the storage and integration of large scale geological survey and high resolution remote sensing data in digital earth application.

Grid has attracted great attention of researchers during the past years. With its developing, it has coped with an increasing amount of complicated data and huge heterogeneous databases. So it is indispensable to develop a middleware that could access and integrate heterogeneous databases. Therefore, we propose a new fundamental architecture of the heterogeneous database access and integration in grid, called CGSP-DAI, which is based on the ChinaGrid Support Platform project. In this paper, we present a virtual table mechanism to access and integrate all kinds of heterogeneous, distributed and complex database resources. It also provides uniform webservice-based interfaces, which can help users to share, query and use resources conveniently. Moreover, it is the most important that it provides distributed join query span the heterogeneous database resources. Finally, this paper shows the experiment to evaluate the performance of CGSP-DAI, and proves the availability and efficiency of CGSP-DAI on database access and integration.

Aiming at intensive data processing in grid environment, a grid platform IDPGP is constructed based on Globus Toolkit 4, OGSA-DAI, Condor and PBS. This platform mainly provides grid information acquirement service, grid resource management service, data access and integration service, which can realize grid resources sharing, intensive data access and processing. In the grid resource management service, a resource management model for grid computing based on hierarchical model is designed to ensure consistency and manageability of each virtual domain and enhance scalability and fault-tolerability of the entire platform.

As various geospatial data are providing people with more and more convenience of daily lives, it's significant to research on managing the increasingly growing geospatial data. This paper proposes a grid-based approach to geospatial data management. There are three layers in our approach. At the storage layer, a shared grid environment is built for massive geospatial data storage. At the logical layer, a geo-middleware that consists of a server, a geospatial operating library and a client toolkit, is developed to enable the geospatial data access and integration. At the application layer, using some mature open-source projects, a prototype system is designed to demonstrate our approach. The feasibility and practicability of our approach is verified by a practical cased. In a word, this grid-based approach has great potential to be improved as a novel solution for massive geospatial data management in the future.
