Life Cycle Assessment is a modeling approach to assess the environmental aspects and potential environmental impacts (e.g., use of resources and the environmental consequences of releases) throughout a product\'s life cycle from raw material acquisition through production, use, end-of-life treatment, recycling and final disposal (i.e., cradle-to-grave) (ISO 14040). It has been employed in recent years by industry and governments to address growing interest about the true costs of resource use, environmental impact, and other externalities of economic activity. Inherently multidisciplinary, LCA draws and synthesizes information from the social and physical sciences. This breadth within LCA models (often referred to as \"data\" by the community of practitioners) can make collecting and synthesizing information the most expensive component of an analysis and drives the need for model reuse. However, the LCA community is faced with a major challenge in its capacity to produce sufficient documentation and metadata to determine representation of these models and to reuse them correctly, an issue broadly affecting researchers across disciplines. Tenopir et al. (2011, 2015) found in each of two surveys of scientific data management and sharing practices that researchers do not feel equipped to generate metadata to facilitate reuse of their data. Furthermore, some researchers reported limited knowledge of available standards to describe data.

Open access tools for quality-assured and efficient data entry in a large, state-wide tobacco survey in India

Background: A large state-wide tobacco survey was conducted using modified version of pretested, globally validated Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) questionnaire in 2015-22016 in Tamil Nadu, India. Due to resource constrains, data collection was carrid out using paper-based questionnaires (unlike the GATS-India, 2009-2010, which used hand-held computer devices) while data entry was done using open access tools. The objective of this paper is to describe the process of data entry and assess its quality assurance and efficiency. Methods: In Epidata language, a variable is referred to as 'field' and a questionnaire (set of fields) as 'record'. Epidata software was used for double data entry with adequate checks followed by validation. Teamviewer was used for remote training and trouble shooting. The Epidata databases (one each for each district and each zone in Chennai city) were housed in shared Dropbox folders, which enabled secure sharing of files and automatic back-up. Each database for a district/zone had separate file for data entry of household level and individual level questionnaire. Results: Of 32,945 households, there were 111,363 individuals aged >= 15 years. The average proportion of records with data entry errors for a district/zone in household level and individual level file was 4% and 24%, respectively. These are the errors that would have gone unnoticed if single entry was used. The median (inter-quartile range) time taken for double data entry for a single household level and individual level questionnaire was 30 (24, 40) s and 86 (64, 126) s, respectively. Conclusion: Efficient and quality-assured near-real-time data entry in a large sub-national tobacco survey was performed using innovative, resource-efficient use of open access tools.

Implementing the EuroFIR Document and data Repositories as accessible resources of food composition information

The EuroFIR Document and data Repositories are being developed as accessible collections of source documents, including grey literature, and the food composition data reported in them. These Repositories will contain source information available to food composition database compilers when selecting their nutritional data. The Document Repository was implemented as searchable bibliographic records in the Europe PubMed Central database, which links to the documents online. The data Repository will contain original data from source documents in the Document Repository. Testing confirmed the FoodCASE food database management system as a suitable tool for the input, documentation and quality assessment of data Repository information. data management requirements for the input and documentation of reported analytical results were established, including record identification and method documentation specifications. Document access and data preparation using the Repositories will provide information resources for compilers, eliminating duplicated work and supporting unambiguous referencing of data contributing to their compiled data. This article addresses the problem that data collected in investigations into translation processes is not made available to the scientific community in most cases, with the consequence that findings based on such data cannot be reproduced and verified and that the data cannot be re-used in other investigations. The article suggests (1) a text annotation system based on the Guidelines for Electronic Text Encoding and Interchange of the Text Encoding Initiative (TEE), which have been adapted to the specific requirements of translation process research, and (2) the use of asset management systems (AMS) to make translation process data accessible on the Internet. AMS are electronic systems for storing, archiving, annotating, and analyzing digital resources of any type. The advantages and functionality these systems offer are described both from the perspective of researchers and from the perspective of translation pedagogy. The text annotation system is illustrated using transcription examples from a longitudinal study of the development of translation competence in students of translation. Special emphasis is placed on the meta-data required for translation-process transcripts and the different phenomena to be transcribed.

The growing amount of data in research and the aspired culture of data sharing make it necessary to improve data documentation in digital libraries. On these grounds we present a conceptual model for subject indexing of research data. Taking the example of social science survey data we inquire the applicability of established indexing principles. Based on these principles our research incorporates the special characteristics of social science survey data, leading us to a model of layered subject indexing.

In proteomics, in the past years, there was a focus on high throughput and reaching of large numbers of identified proteins with the basic discourse of protein expression. To avoid the impression of producing pure lists attempts are usually made to correlate proteins changed in amount between two biological situations to different pathways or protein interactions. This discourse is based on two simplifications, which limit the applicability of proteomics drastically: (i) it is sufficient to quantify a protein from several enzymatic digestion products;(ii) a biological situation is sufficiently described, if a peptide with its PTM is identified, resulting in long lists of modified peptides with data amounts, which are not anymore made accessible for the reader of a publication. The elucidation of N-terminal methylation of proteasome subunit Rpt1 in yeast by Kimura et al. (Proteomics 2013, 13, 3167-3174), which represents the focus on one protein, shows the value of solid chemical analysis with a complete data documentation and paves the way to proteomics based on the protein speciation discourse.

Food composition databases (FCDBs) are published with such different formats and levels of documentation, that it is often difficult to compare values or import data using standard procedure. data from four online FCDBs – USA, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand – were downloaded and transformed according to EuroFIR specifications for presenting data and metadata. Despite their different levels of documentation, the data in these 4 FCDBs can be compared and interchanged using the standardized EuroFIR eSearch platform with little loss of information. This demonstrates the benefits of using standardized systems for linking and describing food composition data.

Automating geospatial metadata generation - An integrated data management and documentation approach

Geospatial metadata have long played an important role in the management of geospatial datasets. Often employed by institutions to organise, maintain and document their geographic resources internally, metadata may also provide a vehicle for exposing marketable data assets externally when contributed to on-line geospatial exchange initiatives. In spite of the numerous benefits it affords, obstacles to the production of such geospatial surrogates are numerous. The current work proposes an approach aimed at reducing the effort associated with geospatial metadata generation through the customisation of a proprietary Geographical Information System (GIS). By coupling data preparation, management and documentation approaches with such a bespoke application, it is intended to mitigate impediments to geospatial metadata generation whilst promoting a system of data administration that safeguards the data it supports. The current prototype, implementing an extended Dublin Core geospatial profile of 23 elements, was capable of generating a total of 20 basic metadata entries. While the findings do not suggest a dispensability of human mediation in the authoring process, they do support the view that a dataset's ambient computing infrastructure has the potential to play a significant role in automating the creation of geospatial metadata.
