An efficient data gathering algorithm for large-scale wireless sensor networks with mobile sinks

Recently, wireless sensor networks with mobile sinks (mWSN) have attracted massive attention attributed to the benefits of mobility. The updating of routing, however, will generate a lot of control packets due to the movements of mobile sinks in mWSN, which will consume a lot of energy and reduce the life of network. This paper proposed a data gathering algorithm for large-scale mWSN. In the proposed algorithm, the entire network was divided into several gathering scopes. Each gathering scope locally updates the routing structure according to the path extension ratio which can effectively reduce the control packets generated by the updating of routing. To decrease the frequency of updating and the energy consumption of network, anchor nodes chains are adopted. Extensive simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can significantly reduce the control packets and prolong the lifetime of network when compared with other algorithms.

Prolonging the network lifetime for a reasonable period while meeting users' needs is key in developing a data gathering algorithm for WSNs. Clustered sensor networks are considered as an efficient approach for extending the network lifetime of WSNs. In clustering, sensor devices are arranged in clusters. Inside the cluster, non-cluster head nodes transmit data to the cluster head (C-H) nodes while the C-H forward the message to the sink. Irrespective of how the clusters are formed, a clustered WSN requires sturdy energy-balanced (EB) and energy-efficient (EE) communication protocol. Different from the previous clustered based routing protocol, this paper develops and analyses a selective-path priority table EB and EE clustering based routing protocol, which employs a mobile sink. The priority table is formed by prioritising the two shortest paths to the C-H or sink according to some simple but efficient rules. The rules are derived using some routing metrics such as transmission range/power and residual energy. The simulation results show that the proposed routing protocol can be integrated with most clustering formation algorithms, even in large scale WSNs. Besides, results show that this routing protocol improve the network lifetime and throughput as compared to similar schemes.

Recent research shows that significant energy can be saved by using mobile elements (ME) for data gathering in wireless sensor networks. The major drawback of this approach is the low movement speed of MEs which limits them to gather data from all sensor nodes with time constraints. This paper presents a data gathering algorithm called Minimum Mobile Elements Routing with Deadline (M2ERD). The goal of M2ERD is to find a set of minimum cost trajectories whilst satisfying deadline constraint. A genetic algorithm is presented to determine the feasible trajectories. The effectiveness and efficiency of M2ERD are verified through extensive simulations. The presented results show that M2ERD not only can provide substantial energy saving compared with traditional data gathering algorithm, but also can reduce the cost of mobile elements compared with ME-based data gathering algorithm.

Depending on the application, mobile ferries can be used for collecting data in a WSN especially those at a large-scale with delay tolerant applications. Unlike data collection via multi-hop forwarding among the sensing nodes, ferries travel across the sensing field to collect data. A ferry based approach eliminates or minimizes the need for multi-hop forwarding of data, and as a result energy consumption at the nodes will be significantly reduced especially nodes that are near the base station as they are used by other nodes to forward data to the base station. However, this increases data delivery latency and as such might not be suitable for all applications. In this paper an efficient data collection scheme using a ferry node is proposed with emphasis of the effect of ferry's path. In this scheme the decision of selecting cluster heads is based on their residual energy and their distance from the ferry path. We simulated the proposed scheme in MATLAB using different scenarios to show their performance in terms of the network lifetime and total energy consumption in the network. We found that the centered and the diagonal fitted paths performed better than the diagonal path in terms of the network lifetime and energy consumed. A Comprehensive Review and Performance Analysis of data gathering algorithms for Wireless Sensor Networks

Wireless sensor networks comprise of vast numbers of sensor nodes deployed to monitor a particular event (fire, intrusion, etc.) or measure a parameter (like temperature, pressure) value representative of the physical condition of the ambient environment. There is a growing need of using energy-efficient data gathering algorithms that can effectively aggregate the monitored/measured data from the individual sensor nodes through a properly constructed communication topology and transmit a single representative data to a control center (sink) that is typically located far away from the network field. In order to maximize node lifetime and be fair to all nodes in the network, such a communication topology has to be dynamically constructed for every round of data gathering by taking into consideration available energy levels of sensor nodes. This paper presents a comprehensive description of two broad categories of data gathering algorithms for wireless sensor networks -the classical algorithms that are not energy-aware and modern energy-aware data gathering algorithms. These algorithms can also be classified based on the communication topology they choose to construct and use for data gathering. The authors also present an extensive simulation study that demonstrates the individual as well as the comparative performance of these data gathering algorithms.

In the past few years, a large number of networking protocols for data gathering through aggregation, compression and recovery in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have utilized the spatio-temporal statistics of real world signals in order to achieve good performance in terms of energy savings and improved signal reconstruction accuracy. However, very little has been said in terms of suitable spatio-temporal models of the signals of interest. These models are very useful to prove the effectiveness of the proposed data gathering solutions as they can be used in the design of accurate simulation tools for WSNs. In addition, they can also be considered as reference models to prove theoretical results for data gathering algorithms. In this paper, we address this gap by devising a mathematical model for real world signals that are correlated in space and time. We thus describe a method to reproduce synthetic signals with tunable correlation characteristics and we verify, through analysis and comparison against large data sets from real world testbeds, that our model is accurate in reproducing the signal statistics of interest.
