In the world of Big data analytics, there is a series of tools aiming at simplifying programming applications to be executed on clusters. Although each tool claims to provide better programming, data and execution models-for which only informal (and often confusing) semantics is generally provided-all share a common underlying model, namely, the dataflow model. The model we propose shows how various tools share the same expressiveness at different levels of abstraction. The contribution of this work is twofold: first, we show that the proposed model is (at least) as general as existing batch and streaming frameworks (e.g., Spark, Flink, Storm), thus making it easier to understand high-level data-processing applications written in such frameworks. Second, we provide a layered model that can represent tools and applications following the dataflow paradigm and we show how the analyzed tools fit in each level. © 2017 World Scientific Publishing Company.

The aim of this paper is to present a new package for the R statistical environment that enables the use of linguistic fuzzy logic in data processing applications. The lfl package provides tools for transformation of data into fuzzy sets representing linguistic expressions, for mining of linguistic fuzzy association rules, and for perfoming an inference on fuzzy rule bases using the Perception-based Logical Deduction (PbLD). The package also contains a Fuzzy Rule-based Ensemble, a tool for time series forecasting based on an ensemble of forecasts from several individual methods that is driven by a linguistic rule base created automatically from a large set of training time series.

Code generation for efficient query processing in managed runtimes

In this paper we examine opportunities arising from the convergence of two trends in data management: in-memory database systems (IMDBs), which have received renewed attention following the availability of affordable, very large main memory systems;and language-integrated query, which transparently integrates database queries with programming languages (thus addressing the famous 'impedance mismatch' problem). Language-integrated query not only gives application developers a more convenient way to query external data sources like IMDBs, but also to use the same querying language to query an application's in-memory collections. The latter offers further transparency to developers as the query language and all data is represented in the data model of the host programming language. However, compared to IMDBs, this additional freedom comes at a higher cost for query evaluation. Our vision is to improve in-memory query processing of application objects by introducing database technologies to managed runtimes. We focus on querying and we leverage query compilation to improve query processing on application objects. We explore different query compilation strategies and study how they improve the performance of query processing over application data. We take C] as the host programming language as it supports language-integrated query through the LINQ framework. Our techniques deliver significant performance improvements over the default LINQ implementation. Our work makes important first steps towards a future where data processing applications will commonly run on machines that can store their entire datasets in-memory, and will be written in a single programming language employing languageintegrated query and IMDB-inspired runtimes to provide transparent and highly efficient querying.

This paper emphasizes some key data processing applications to be used in conjunction with the voice and facsimile services as a platform for deploying ISDN in North America. Special emphasis is placed on the emerging standards of both Accredited Standards Committees (ASC) T1 and X3 in an attempt to harmonize the computer and telecommunication industries towards providing the user with an integrated platform that is vendor transparent and ubiquitous. This generic platform, which spans a large spector of businesses, is only presented as a base context for defining user specific needs and incubating the applications that directly relate to businesses. Distributed Transaction processing, Electronic data Interchange, Information Retrieval, Electronic Mail, and File Transfer together with seven supplementary services for voice and G4 facsimile are proposed for ISDN deployment in the marketplace. This paper, therefore, describes how the relevant standards may be exercised via the various ISDN channels and emphasizes the value of the North American ISDN Users' Forum for commercializing this platform.

Local area networks have been used successfully in data processing applications for several years. Recently, there have been several proposals for using these networks in real-time applications such as voice transmission. This project examines, by means of a simulation, the feasibility of using Ethernet for carrying data in real-time environments, and, in particular, studies the effect of channel load on network delay. The simulation described shows that, with appropriately chosen loads, Ethernet can keep within realtime constraints and service every node successfully.
