One challenge remains in teaching and learning data structure is to facilitate students' understanding of the dynamic presentation from the collection of data elements in memory. Visualizing how each element points to the next, and how a collection of nodes together represent a sequence with graphs or linked-node diagram can help us understand not only the abstract data structure but also the dynamics of the data elements in the program execution. While printing (to a console) is a very common technique for understanding and debugging data structures, we in this paper presents an interactive visualization tool for data structure in Python. Our work focuses on visual and interactive methods to facilitate the communication of data structure and associated data operations by dynamic graphing corresponding to the programming process. By using the inner execution trace, our proposed method can monitor the run-time data structure change and render the corresponding presentation in real-time. The resulting serial of key frames featuring major data structure transformation are available for review and analysis. All these combine to fill the gap between the abstract data representation and a dynamic learning-by-coding process.

Designing tools for K-12 computer science education poses a unique and difficult challenge. The focus should be on teaching broad computer science concepts in an engaging way. Other approaches have involved visualizing data structures and algorithms. However, those approaches aren't very engaging. By applying the principles of universal design for learning we created an interactive visualization tool for a simple line game. This visualization tool has several ways to represent the same data structure, and is much more engaging than other approaches to teaching computer science concepts. We are still conducting research on the effectiveness of this tool, but our preliminary results look promising.

Co-cluster extraction is a basic approach for summarization of cooccurrence information. This paper proposes a visual assessment technique for co-cluster structure analysis through cooccurrence-sensitive ordering, which realizes the hybrid concept of the coVAT algorithm and distance-sensitive ordering in relational data clustering. Object-item cooccurrence information is first enlarged into an (object + item) x (object + item) cooccurrence data matrix, and then, cooccurrence-sensitive ordering is performed through spectral ordering of the enlargedmatrix. Additionally, this paper also consider the intuitive validation of co-cluster structures considering cluster crossing curves, which was adopted in cluster validation with distance-sensitive ordering. The characteristic features of the proposed approach are demonstrated through several numerical experiments including application to social analysis of Japanese prefectural statistics.

Algorithm visualizations (AVs) are widely viewed as having the potential for improving computer science education. However, the rate of AV use and overall impact on education does not match the positive interest in their use that instructors report. Surveys of CS faculty show that impediments to successful use of AVs in the classroom include difficulties in finding quality AVs on desired topics, difficulties in adapting AVs to a given classroom setting, and lack of knowledge on the best way to deploy AVs. This indicates a need for better support for instructors, to get them past these barriers. We seek to provide this support through an online educational community that relies on a new model based less on the "digital library" approach of information gained by going to a site and searching. Instead, the focus is on community-added content through members' discussions, reviews, and ratings of content items. The AlgoViz community effort will better focus the future direction of AV development and use.

Video streaming platforms are a major source of information for computer science students, where data structures and algorithms can be illustrated by means of animation. Our Python library, AAnim, aids a content creator in making such videos without any special expertise. Given a list of data structure queries or an input graph, our library creates a high-quality video that illustrates both how the data structure evolves and how these changes occur in the algorithm's pseudocode. The data structure's layout is generated automatically, further alleviating the difficulty in creating such videos. The visual representation of software data structures is especially relevant to the creation of games which crowdsource science problems to a gaming community and to educational games which seek to teach computer science concepts within the context of computer games. Xylem: The Code of Plants is a game designed to crowdsource formal software verification via loop invariant specifications. Due to the nature of this project, it was important that the game 1) appeal to a large audience, 2) support a wide variety of data structures and 3) hide any actual data from the source code that was generating the game levels. To these ends, a method of visualizing data structures was developed that features a consistent plant-based narrative metaphor, is flexible enough to accommodate multiple types of data structures while maintaining narrative integrity, and obscures all real data from the target source code.

We report on the state of the field of algorithm visualization, both quantitatively and qualitatively. Computer science educators seem to find algorithm and data structure visualizations attractive for their classrooms. Educational research shows that some are effective while many are not. Clearly, then, visualizations are difficult to create and use right. There is little in the way of a supporting community, and many visualizations are downright poor. Topic distribution is heavily skewed towards simple concepts with advanced topics receiving little to no attention. We have cataloged nearly 400 visualizations available on the Internet. We have a wiki-based catalog which includes availability, platform, strengths and weaknesses, responsible personnel and institutions, and other data about each visualization. We have developed extraction and analysis tools to gather statistics about the corpus of visualizations. Based on analysis of this collection, we point out areas where improvements may be realized and suggest techniques for implementing such improvements. We pay particular attention to the free and open source software movement as a model which the visualization community may do well to emulate, from both a software engineering perspective and a community-building standpoint.

The Role of visualization in Computer Science Education

Computer science core instruction attempts to provide a detailed understanding of dynamic processes such as the working of an algorithm or the flow of information between computing entities. Such dynamic processes are not well explained by static media such as text and images, and are difficult to convey in lecture. The authors survey the history of visualization in computer science education, focusing on artifacts that have a documented positive educational assessment. Changes in how computing technology has affected the development and uptake of such visualization artifacts in computer science education, and how recent technology changes are leading to progress in developing online hypertextbooks are then discussed.
