Reusable Design of data visualization software Architecture for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

Reusable software architectures and supporting components are the focus of an increasing number of software organizations attempting to reduce software costs. A design pattern describes the solution to a recurring problem encountered in object-oriented software development. The fundamental issue of design patterns is to encapsulate the concepts that vary so as to improve reusability. In this paper, we propose a data visualization software architecture for unmanned aerial vehicles. The proposed solution aims to improve the reusability of these systems using design patterns as development artifacts. The architecture is part of a ground control station for unmanned aerial vehicles. Essential aspects of the architecture as well as the developed working prototype are described.

Optical engineering projects often require massive data processing with many steps in the course of design, simulation, fabrication, metrology, and evaluation. A MATLAB (TM)-based data processing platform has been developed to provide a standard way to manipulate and visualize various types of data that are created from optical measurement equipment. The operation of this software platform via a graphical user interface is easy and powerful. data processing is performed by running modules that use a proscribed format for sharing data. Complex operations are performed by stringing modules together using macros. While numerous modules have been developed to allow data processing without the need to write software, the greatest power of the platform is provided by its flexibility. A developer's toolkit is provided to allow development and customization of modules, and the program allows a real-time interface with the standard MATLAB environment. This software, developed by the Large Optics Fabrication and Testing group at the University of Arizona, is now publicly available.** We present the capabilities of the software and provide some demonstrations of its use for data analysis and visualization. Furthermore, we demonstrate the flexibility of the platform for solving new problems.

SAGUARO is open-source software developed to simplify data assimilation, analysis, and visualization by providing a single framework for disparate data sources from raw hardware measurements to optical simulation output. Developed with a user-friendly graphical interface in the MATLAB (TM) environment, SAGUARO is intended to be easy for the end-user in search of useful optical information as well as the developer wanting to add new modules and functionalities. We present here the flexibility of the SAGUARO software and discuss how it can be applied to the wider optical engineering community.

MyView2, a new visualization software tool for analysis of LHD data

The Large Helical Device (LHD) at the National Institute for Fusion Science (NIFS) is the world's largest superconducting helical fusion device, providing a scientific research center to elucidate important physics research such as plasma transport, turbulence dynamics, and other topics. Furthermore, many types of advanced diagnostic devices are used to measure the confinement plasma characteristics, and these valuable physical data are registered over the 131,000 discharges in the LHD database. However, it is difficult to investigate the experimental data even though much physical data has been registered. In order to improve the efficiency for investigating plasma physics in LHD, we have developed a new data visualization software, MyView2, which consists of Python-based modules that can be easily set up and updated. MyView2 provides immediate access to experimental results, cross-shot analysis, and a collaboration point for scientific research. In particular, the MyView2 software is a portable structure for making viewable LHD experimental data in on- and off-site web servers, which is a capability not previously available in any general use tool. We will also discuss the benefits of using the MyView2 software for in-depth analysis of LHD experimental data. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

VennDIS: A JavaFX-based Venn and Euler diagram software to generate publication quality figures

Venn diagrams are graphical representations of the relationships among multiple sets of objects and are often used to illustrate similarities and differences among genomic and proteomic datasets. All currently existing tools for producing Venn diagrams evince one of two traits;they require expertise in specific statistical software packages (such as R), or lack the flexibility required to produce publication-quality figures. We describe a simple tool that addresses both shortcomings, Venn Diagram Interactive software (VennDIS), a JavaFX-based solution for producing highly customizable, publication-quality Venn, and Euler diagrams of up to five sets. The strengths of VennDIS are its simple graphical user interface and its large array of customization options, including the ability to modify attributes such as font, style and position of the labels, background color, size of the circle/ellipse, and outline color. It is platform independent and provides real-time visualization of figure modifications. The created figures can be saved as XML files for future modification or exported as high-resolution images for direct use in publications.

NanoStringNormCNV: pre-processing of NanoString CNV data

The NanoString System is a well-established technology for measuring RNA and DNA abundance. Although it can estimate copy number variation, relatively few tools support analysis of these data. To address this gap, we created NanoStringNormCNV, an R package for pre-processing and copy number variant calling from NanoString data. This package implements algorithms for pre-processing, quality-control, normalization and copy number variation detection. A series of reporting and data visualization methods support exploratory analyses. To demonstrate its utility, we apply it to a new dataset of 96 genes profiled on 41 prostate tumour and 24 matched normal samples.

aSummary: Arrayed high-throughput screens (HTS) cover a broad range of applications using RNAi or small molecules as perturbations and specialized software packages for statistical analysis have become available. However, exploratory data analysis and integration of screening results has remained challenging due to the size of the data sets and the lack of user-friendly tools for interpretation and visualization of screening results. Here we present HTSvis, a web application to interactively visualize raw data, perform quality control and assess screening results from single to multi-channel measurements such as image-based screens. Per well aggregated raw and analyzed data of various assay types and scales can be loaded in a generic tabular format. This case emphasizes the importance of data analysis through the usage of data visualization software to help you gain an understanding of data and how it can be transformed into information that can enhance the decision-making process. In the data visualization software, Tableau, you will be asked to connect to an Access data file to analyze six months of sales transaction data of a small start-up ice cream manufacturer. Consistent with AACSB Accounting Standard A7, the case focuses on familiarization with data visualization software to “convey data, results, and insights” (AACSB, 2013) and apply higher-order thinking. Upon familiarization with the data and data visualization software, you will be required to perform an exploratory analysis to identify key trends in the data to prepare and report that information to enhance the business decision-making process. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is primarily responsible for the advancement, safety, and regulation of civil aviation, as well as overseeing the development of the air traffic control system in the United States. As such, it is faced with tremendous amounts of data on a daily basis. This data, which comes in high volumes, in various formats, from disparate sources and at various frequencies, is used by FAA analysts and researchers to make accurate forecasts, improve the safety and operational performance of their operations, and streamline processes. However, by its very nature, aviation Big data presents a number of challenges to analysts: it impedes their ability to get a real-time picture of the state of the system, identify trends and operational patterns, make real-time predictions, etc. As such, the overarching objective of the present effort is to support FAA through the development of a data fusion framework to support the analysis of aviation Big data. For the purpose of this research, three datasets were considered: System-Wide Information Management (SWIM) Flight Publication data Service (SFDPS), Traffic Flow Management System (TFMS), and Meteorological Terminal Aviation Routine (METAR). The equivalent of one day of data was retrieved from each dataset, parsed and fused. A use case was then used to illustrate how a data fusion framework could be used by FAA analysts and researchers. The use case focused on predicting the occurrence of weather-related Ground Delay Programs (GDP) at the Newark (EWR), La Guardia (LGA), and Boston Logan (BOS) International Airports. This involved developing a prediction model using the Decision Tree Machine Learning technique. Evaluation metrics such as Matthew's Correlation Coefficient were then used to evaluate the model's performance.
