Based on the analysis of the fundamental constraints on deep space communication data rates, this paper shows that the performance of post-carrier synchronization combining could be enhanced by data-aided (DA) synchronization. Through simulation, we get the optimal parameters for the DA synchronization algorithms and the performance enhancing zone of the proposed arraying scheme comparing with the traditional phase lock loop (PLL) arraying scheme. Within this zone, the proposed scheme can support higher data rate with the same signal power, or can decrease spacecraft power with the same data rate.

We compute the training sequences that minimize the Cramer-Rao Bound (CRB) corresponding to the joint estimator for carrier phase, carrier frequency, and symbol timing offset. It is shown that if the symbols in a training sequence are drawn from the set of complex numbers, the resulting CRB is lower than if the symbols are drawn from a discrete set of constellation points.

This paper develops an FPGA implementation of a trained coarse Carrier Frequency Offset estimation and correction scheme using MATLAB System Generator. The designed system is capable of supporting variable FFT sizes for Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing signals and different pilot symbol structures making it compatible with a large number of wireless communication standards, unlike other work that is protocol specific. This design stands out from its more common implementations as it requires only one pilot symbol to be considered for synchronization by using a data-aided modified correlation scheme, allowing for an increase in throughput. The Bit Error Rate of the corrected signal received over an Additive White Gaussian Noise channel is compared to the case without correction. This scheme demonstrated increased performance throughput since only a single pilot symbol was used.

This paper deals with data-aided (DA) carrier frequency and time offset synchronization schemes for a transmultiplexer (TMUX) using an exponentially modulated filter bank (EMFB). In filter-bank multicarrier (FBMC) systems like orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), accurate synchronization schemes must be achieved because of interference produced by synchronization errors. We offer two different novel synchronization approaches which are proposed for EMFB-based TMUX, according to the least square (LS) and the maximum likelihood (ML) approaches, respectively, in the time and frequency domains. The performance of these algorithms are evaluated through computer simulations and compared with OFDM system. The result shows the superiority of the CFO and STO estimators based on the ML approach.

Non-coherent detection and auto-correlation detection are promising techniques for low complexity, low cost and low data rate ultra-wideband communication applications. For both schemes, the integration region of a receiver integrator significantly affects the bit error rate (BER) performance. In this paper, a method of synchronization and estimating the optimal integration region, i.e., the initial point and the length of the integration, is presented. Following a theoretical BER analysis, a data-aided estimation method using the idea of inter-symbol correlation is proposed. It is shown that using noise corrupted received signals, the proposed method is not only practically applicable, but also enhances the performance compared to non-optimal timing methods.

A new time of arrival estimation method using UWB dual pulse signals

Ultra-wideband (UWB) signals can be used for accurate time of arrival (TOA) based ranging because of their high time resolution. In this paper, a novel data-aided TOA estimation method is presented using dual pulse (DP) signal structure. It employs received signal autocorrelation and threshold crossing to detect the direct path. The effects of different threshold values and training sequence lengths on the estimation accuracy of the proposed method are studied. The performance improvement of this approach over the conventional energy detection based method is also demonstrated via simulation.

Spectral efficiency is of great concern in the return channel of satellite based broadband systems. In [1] the feasibility of increased efficiency by reducing channel spacing below the Symbol Rate was demonstrated using joint detection and decoding for a synchronized system. We extend this work by addressing the critical synchronization problem in the presence of adjacent channel interference (ACI) which limits performance as carrier spacing is reduced. A pilot sequence aided joint synchronization scheme for a multi-frequency time division multiple access (MF-TDMA) system is proposed. Based on a maximum likelihood (ML) criterion, the channel parameters, including frequency, time and phase are jointly estimated for the channel of interest and the adjacent channels. The impact of ACI on the synchronization and detection performance is investigated. It is shown that joint channel parameter estimation outperforms single carrier synchronization with reasonable additional computational complexity in the receiver. Based on the proposed synchronization scheme in conjunction with an appropriate joint detection mechanism, see [1], carrier spacing can be reduced significantly compared to current systems providing a substantial increase in spectral efficiency.

The upstream of digital cable modem is a burst mode transmission system, where a burst contains the preamble and data. In this paper, we consider algorithms for the symbol timing, carrier frequency- and phase-offset recovery for the upstream cable modem, that are compliant to DOCSIS 2.0. Several algorithms are tested and verified to find the best algorithm for each of the three recovery blocks, respectively. To fit to the DOCSIS specification, Oerder & Meyr's is chosen for the timing recovery algorithm, Mengali & Morelli's is chosen for the carrier frequency-offset recovery algorithm and Cartwright's is chosen for blind carrier phase recovery. We decide the optimal preamble length for these algorithms and check the error variance. Finally, we show the error performance of the entire system.
