The growing complexity of signal processing algorithms and platforms poses significant challenges to design methods and implementation tools. High-level dataflow programs, such as those in MPEG's RVC-CAL language, provide abstraction and the opportunity for extensive design-space exploration, but they do raise the problem of efficient automatic synthesis to hardware and software. This paper presents a tool called Xronos that efficiently synthesizes RVC-CAL programs to an RTL-level hardware description and significantly improves on previous efforts in both quality of the resulting implementation and synthesis speed. By directly supporting all the features of the RVC-CAL language, it translates unmodified standard MPEG reference code to a functioning hardware implementation. The paper describes the essential processing architecture of Xronos, the differences from other related approaches and experimental results that show Xronos to produce faster and smaller implementations, while at the same time significantly reducing synthesis times.

We study various operations for splitting, partitioning, projecting and merging streams of data. These operations are motivated by their use in dataflow programming and stream processing languages. We use the framework of stream calculus and stream circuits for defining and proving properties of such operations using behavioural differential equations and coinduction proof principles. As a featured example we give proofs of results, observed by Moessner, from elementary number theory using our framework. We study the invariance of certain well patterned classes of streams, namely rational and algebraic streams, under splitting and merging. Finally we show that stream circuits extended with gates for dyadic split and merge are expressive enough to realise some non-rational algebraic streams, thereby going beyond ordinary stream circuits. Systolic arrays offer a very attractive, data-centric, execution model as an alternative to the von Neumann architecture. Hardware implementations of systolic arrays turned out not to be viable solutions in the past. This article shows how the systolic design principles can be applied to a software solution to deliver an algorithm with unprecedented strong scaling capabilities. Systolic array for the QR decomposition is developed and a virtualization layer is used for mapping of the algorithm to a large distributed memory system. Strong scaling properties are discovered, superior to existing solutions.

Reactive programming has recently gained popularity as a paradigm that is well-suited for developing event-driven and interactive applications. It facilitates the development of such applications by providing abstractions to express time-varying values and automatically managing dependencies between such values. A number of approaches have been recently proposed embedded in various languages such as Haskell, Scheme, JavaScript, Java,. NET, etc. This survey describes and provides a taxonomy of existing reactive programming approaches along six axes: representation of time-varying values, evaluation model, lifting operations, multidirectionality, glitch avoidance, and support for distribution. From this taxonomy, we observe that there are still open challenges in the field of reactive programming. For instance, multidirectionality is supported only by a small number of languages, which do not automatically track dependencies between time-varying values. Similarly, glitch avoidance, which is subtle in reactive programs, cannot be ensured in distributed reactive programs using the current techniques.

This paper deals with semantics-preserving parallelism reduction methods for cyclo-static dataflow applications. Parallelism reduction is the process of equivalent actors fusioning. The principal objectives of parallelism reduction are to decrease the memory footprint of an application and to increase its execution performance. We focus on parallelism reduction methodolo- gies constrained by application throughput. A generic parallelism reduction methodology is introduced. Experimental results are provided for asserting the performance of the proposed method.

dataflow languages provide natural support for specifying constraints between objects in dynamic applications, where programs need to react efficiently to changes of their environment. Researchers have long investigated how to take advantage of dataflow constraints by embedding them into procedural languages. Previous mixed imperative/dataflow systems, however, require syntactic extensions or libraries of ad hoc data types for binding the imperative program to the dataflow solver. In this paper we propose a novel approach that smoothly combines the two paradigms without placing undue burden on the programmer. In our framework, programmers can define ordinary statements of the imperative host language that enforce constraints between objects stored in special memory locations designated as "reactive". Differently from previous approaches, reactive objects can be of any legal type in the host language, including primitive data types, pointers, arrays, and structures. Statements defining constraints are automatically re-executed every time their input memory locations change, letting a program behave like a spreadsheet where the values of some variables depend upon the values of other variables. The constraint solving mechanism is handled transparently by altering the semantics of elementary operations of the host language for reading and modifying objects. We provide a formal semantics and describe a concrete embodiment of our technique into C/C++, showing how to implement it efficiently in conventional platforms using off-the-shelf compilers. We discuss common coding idioms and relevant applications to reactive scenarios, including incremental computation, observer design pattern, and data structure repair. The performance of our implementation is compared to ad hoc problem-specific change propagation algorithms, as well as to language-centric approaches such as self-adjusting computation and subject/observer communication mechanisms, showing that the proposed approa

Compile-time scheduling of dynamic dataflow programs is still an open problem. This paper presents how scheduling of dynamic portions of asynchronous dataflow networks described using CAL language can be determined before execution by the analysis of the state space of network partitions. Experiments show that the number of run-time operations employed by dynamic schedulers is largely reduced when the schedules extracted by the state analysis are employed.

Overview of the MPEG Reconfigurable Video Coding Framework

Video coding technology in the last 20 years has evolved producing a variety of different and complex algorithms and coding standards. So far the specification of such standards, and of the algorithms that build them, has been done case by case providing monolithic textual and reference software specifications in different forms and programming languages. However, very little attention has been given to provide a specification formalism that explicitly presents common components between standards, and the incremental modifications of such monolithic standards. The MPEG Reconfigurable Video Coding (RVC) framework is a new ISO standard currently under its final stage of standardization, aiming at providing video codec specifications at the level of library components instead of monolithic algorithms. The new concept is to be able to specify a decoder of an existing standard or a completely new configuration that may better satisfy application-specific constraints by selecting standard components from a library of standard coding algorithms. The possibility of dynamic configuration and reconfiguration of codecs also requires new methodologies and new tools for describing the new bitstream syntaxes and the parsers of such new codecs. The RVC framework is based on the usage of a new actor/ dataflow oriented language called CAL for the specification of the standard library and instantiation of the RVC decoder model. This language has been specifically designed for modeling complex signal processing systems. CAL dataflow models expose the intrinsic concurrency of the algorithms by employing the notions of actor programming and dataflow. The paper gives an overview of the concepts and technologies building the standard RVC framework and the non standard tools supporting the RVC model from the instantiation and simulation of the CAL model to software and/or hardware code synthesis.

The MPEG Reconfigurable Video Coding (RVC) framework is a new standard under development by MPEG that aims at providing a unified high-level specification of current and future MPEG video coding technologies using dataflow models. In this framework, a decoder is built as a configuration of video coding modules taken from the standard MPEG toolbox library or proprietary libraries. The elements of the library are specified by a textual description that expresses the I/O behavior of each module and by a reference software written using a subset of the CAL Actor Language named RVC-CAL. A decoder configuration is written in an XML dialect by connecting a set of CAL modules. Code generators are fundamental supports that enable the direct transformation of a high level specification to efficient hardware and software implementations. This paper presents a synthesis tool that from a CAL dataflow program generates C code and an associated SystemC model. The generated code is validated against the original CAL description simulated using the Open dataflow environment. Experimental results of the translation of two descriptions of an MPEG-4 Simple Profile decoder with different granularities are shown and discussed.
