A Technique to Build debugging tools for Lazy Functional Logic Languages

This paper is based on a recently developed technique to build debugging tools for lazy functional programming languages. With this technique it is possible to replay the execution of a lazy program with a strict semantics by recording information of unevaluated expressions. The recorded information is called an oracle and is very compact. Oracles contain the number of strict steps between discarding unevaluated expressions. The technique has already been successfully employed to construct a debugger for lazy functional languages.

With many cores driven by high memory bandwidth, today＇s graphics processing unit （GPU） has involved into an absolute computing workhorse. More and more scientists, researchers and software developers are using GPUs to accelerate their algorithms and ap- plications. Developing complex programs and software on the GPU, however, is still far from easy with ex- isting tools provided by hardware vendors. This article introduces our recent research efforts to make GPU soft- ware development much easier. Specifically, we designed BSGP, a high-level programming language for general- purpose computation on the GPU. A BSGP program looks much the same as a sequential C program, and is thus easy to read, write and maintain. Its performance on the GPU is guaranteed by a well-designed compiler that converts the program to native GPU code. We also developed an effective debugging system for BSGP pro- grams based on the GPU interrupt, a unique feature of BSGP that allows calling CPU functions from inside GPU code. Moreover, using BSGP, we developed GPU algorithms for constructing several widely-used spatial hierarchies for high-performance graphics applications.

End-user programmers' code is notoriously buggy. This problem is amplified by the increasing complexity of end users' programs. To help end users catch errors early and reliably, we employ a novel approach for the design of end-user debugging tools: a focus on supporting end users' effective debugging strategies. This paper makes two contributions. We first demonstrate the potential of a strategy-centric approach to tool design by presenting StratCel, an add-in for Excel. Second, we show the benefits of this design approach: participants using StratCel found twice as many bugs as participants using standard Excel, they fixed four times as many bugs, and all this in only a small fraction of the time. Other contributions included: a boost in novices' debugging performance near experienced participants' improved levels, validated design guidelines, a discussion of the generalizability of this approach, and several opportunities for future research.

tools and strategies for debugging distributed stream processing applications

Distributed data stream processing applications are often characterized by data flow graphs consisting of a large number of built-in and user-defined operators connected via streams. These flow graphs are typically deployed on a large set of nodes. The data processing is carried out on-the-fly, as tuples arrive at possibly very high rates, with minimum latency. It is well known that developing and debugging distributed, multi-threaded, and asynchronous applications, such as stream processing applications, can be challenging. Thus, without domain-specific debugging support, developers struggle when debugging distributed applications. In this paper, we describe tools and language support to support debugging distributed stream processing applications. Our key insight is to view debugging of stream processing applications from four different, but related, perspectives. First, debugging the semantics of the application involves verifying the operator-level composition and inspecting the flows at the logical level. Second, debugging the user-defined operators involves traditional source-code debugging, but strongly tied to the stream-level interactions. Third, debugging the deployment details of the application require understanding the runtime physical layout and configuration of the application. Fourth, debugging the performance of the application requires inspecting various performance metrics (such as communication rates, CPU utilization, etc.) associated with streams, operators, and nodes in the system. In light of this characterization, we developed several tools such as a debugger-aware compiler and an associated stream debugger, composition and deployment visualizers, and performance visualizers, as well as language support, such as configuration knobs for logging and tracing, deployment configurations such as operator-to-process and process-to-node mappings, monitoring directives to inspect streams, and special sink adapters to intercept and dump streaming data

MICROPROCESSOR AND DIGITAL ICS FOR MOTION CONTROL

This paper reviews the recent developments in microprocessors and digital IC's with a special attention to applications to motion control area. First, the use of microprocessors and digital IC's in the control of electrical motor drives is considered. General-purpose microprocessors and microcontrollers are then presented with emphasis on features that are necessary for the implementation of real-time control systems. High-performance advanced processors such as digital signal processors (DSP's), reduced-instruction-set computing (RISC) processors, and parallel processors are studied. Development and debugging tools required for developing sophisticated microprocessor-based control systems are considered. The capabilities of application-specific integrated circuits (ASIC's) in motion control and their design process are examined. Typical application examples illustrating recent research works in digital motion control using microprocessors and digital IC's are presented. The potentials of new devices are considered for application to high-performance drive systems. Trends for future development of the microprocessor technology for motion control applications are projected.

What constitutes debugging? An exploratory study of debugging episodes

When debugging, developers engage in activities such as navigating, editing, testing, and inspecting code. Despite being the building blocks of debugging, little is known about how they constitute debugging. To address this gap, we introduce the concept of a "debugging episode" which encompasses the time from when a developer first investigates a defect until when the defect is fixed or the developer stops. We observed 11 professional developers working on open source projects, coding 89 debugging episodes and 2135 instances of activities that occurred during them. Six activities were identified: navigate, edit, test, inspect, consult resources, and other miscellaneous activities. We found that developers spent the most time editing (41%) and testing (29%) during debugging. When addressing time-consuming defects, developers engaged in more diverse types of debugging activities, spent more time inspecting program state, navigating code, and consulting external resources, and spent less time testing. We found that the activities developers do while debugging were more similar than different than the activities that make up implementation work. Developers spent a similar fraction of their time editing and navigating during debugging and implementation work. However, debugging involved significantly more time inspecting (16%) than implementation work (2%), while implementation work involved more time consulting resources (24%) than debugging (6%). We conducted semi-structured interviews with ten developers to gain insights into the challenges that cause developers in longer debugging episodes to engage with more activities. Our findings offer insight into the debugging process and the challenges that developers confront, offering implications for the design of debugging tools, improved debugging education, and future research.

Toward integration of data race detection in DSM systems

We present a distributed algorithm, called DJIT, for detecting data races in DSM systems. DJIT is designed as a DSM add-on, detecting a race condition as soon as one is created. It instantly displays to the user the precise place in the program where the race occurred. There are no false detections, and no data races are missed. We have implemented DJIT On top of MILLIPAGE-a fine granularity, page-based DSM system. Our implementation makes novel use of the operating system protection mechanisms. In particular, we propose a protection cache. which call be used for local logging of accesses to variables. As a result. our implementation does not increase the message complexity of the execution. piggybacking all its communication activity on top of the DSM-related messages. The performance figures show that our data race detection mechanism has only a minor influence on performance. The measured overheads. averaging only few percent, are two orders of magnitude smaller than those achieved in previous work. Thus, our technique makes the integration of on-the-fly data race detection during the regular DSM execution feasible for the first time. (C) 1999 Academic Press.

IBM Project Proposes Using Light to Make Chips Faster

IBM has developed an optical technology that could speed up data transmissions among servers, between chips within a system, or on the chips themselves. The company's SNIPER (silicon nanoscale integrated photonic and electronic transceiver) project uses CMOS integrated nanophotonic technology. This approach employs pulses of light, rather than copper connec tions, to move data at higher speeds. IBM's approach uses wavelength division multiplexing, which is faster because numerous data streams can be carried on multiple wavelengths simultaneously within a single fiber. IBM integrates the photonics and the CMOS electronics circuitry on the same chip during the manufacturing process. This approach is less expensive, yields more chips, and avoids damaging parts during assembly.
