When the indiscernibility relation, fundamental to Classical Rough Set Approach, is substituted with dominance relation, it results in Dominance-Based Rough Set Approach to data analysis. It enables Support not only for nominal classification tasks, but also when ordinal properties on attribute values can be observed [1], making DRSA methodology well suited for stylometric processing of texts. Stylometry involves handling quantitative features of texts leading to characterisation of authors to the point of recognition of their individual writing styles. As always, selection of attributes is crucial to classification accuracy, as is the construction of a decision algorithm. When minimal cover gives unsatisfactory results, and all rules on examples algorithm returns very high number of rules, usually constraints are imposed by selection of some reduct and limiting the decision algorithm by including within it only rules with certain support. However, reducts are typically numerous and within them some of conditional attributes are used more often than others, which is also true for conditions specified by decision rules. The paper presents observations how the frequency of usage for features reflects on the performance of decision algorithms resulting from selection of rules with conditional attributes exploited most and least often.

In decision rule induction approaches either minimal, complete, or satisfying sets of constituent rules are inferred, with an aim of providing predictive properties while offering descriptive capabilities for the learned concepts. Instead of limiting rules at their induction phase we can also execute post-processing of the set of generated decision rules (whether it is complete or not) by filtering out those that meet some constraints. The paper presents the research on rule filtering while following a ranking of conditional attributes, obtained in the process of sequential forward selection of input features for ANN classifiers.

In this paper, a graph cut based fast Coding Unit (CU) decision algorithm is proposed for HEVC inter frames. Firstly, a feature called pyramid variance of the absolute difference (PVAD) is designed for the CU selection. Secondly, the CU decision is modeled as a Markov Random Field (MRF) inference problem, which can be optimized by the graph cut algorithm. Thirdly, a maximum a posteriori (MAP) approach based on the R-D cost is conducted to evaluate whether the unsplit CUs should be further split or not. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Aims: To assess the rate of parametrial involvement in a large cohort of patients who underwent radical hysterectomy for cervical cancer and to suggest an algorithm for the triage of patients to simple hysterectomy or simple trachelectomy. Methods: Multicenter retrospective study of patients with cervical cancer stage I through IIA who underwent radical hysterectomy and pelvic lymphadenectomy. The patients were divided into 2 groups according to whether or not the parametrium was involved. The two groups were compared with regard to the clinical and histopathological variables. Logistic regression of the variables potentially assessable prior to definitive hysterectomy such as age, tumor size, lymph-vascular space invasion (LVSI) and nodal involvement was performed. Results: Five hundred and thirty patients had specific histological data on parametrial involvement and in 58 (10.9%) patients, parametria was involved. Parametrial involvement was significantly associated with older age, tumors larger than 2 cm, deeper invasion, LVSI, involved surgical margins, and the presence of nodal metastasis. By triaging patients with a tumor <= 2 cm and no LVSI, the parametrial involvement rate was 1.8% (2/112 patients). With further triage of patients with negative nodes, the rate of parametrial involvement was 0% (0/107 patients). Conclusion: Using a pre-operative triage algorithm, patients with early small lesions, no LVSI and no nodal involvement may be spared radical surgical procedures and parametrectomy. We present a novel method where smart phone sensors are used to sense the prevailing traffic situation and to share extracted information among a community. Instead of using the power-hungry GPS receiver in the mobile device for detecting congestion through vehicular motion, we use the accelerometer along with a novel algorithm. We show that traffic congestion situations can be identified with 78% accuracy with our technique. Vehicular traffic has become a severe problem, particularly in the less developed countries. Therefore pre awareness of congestion situations is very important for an efficient lifestyle.

Classification systems for femoral revision of a failed THA fail to address several of the more critical determinants. The aim of the present study was to assess the reliability of a simplified algorithm for decision making during cementless reconstruction for femoral loosening with respect to stem length, stem design and the need for an extended trochanteric osteotomy. Four observers with different levels of clinical experience blindly assessed 40 X-rays of hips scheduled for a femoral revision. Intra-observer and inter-observer reliability of 4 radiographic criteria were assessed: 1) diaphyseal bone loss extension to the isthmus;2) proximal femoral remodelling;3) presence of cement;and 4) cortical thickness. Inter-observer agreement relating to the four criteria was good (kappa = 0.66) for the extension to isthmus, moderate (kappa = 0.57) for proximal femoral remodelling and very good for presence of cement (kappa = 1) and cortical thickness (kappa = 0.88). Intra-observer agreement was good for extension to isthmus and proximal femoral remodelling and very good for presence of cement and cortical thickness. Based on these criteria, an algorithm has been developed to describe 4 reconstruction options. The algorithm seems reliable for decision making during femoral cementless revision, but research into comparison with intraoperative findings is still required. Modern interconnected power systems often consist of thousands of pieces of equipment each of which may have an effect on the system security. And the proper operation of today's power system relies heavily on IT, and in particular data communication. This paper develops a risk-based integrated assessment method that reflects power system security both directly and indirectly. Direct characteristics address such undesirable conditions as circuit overloads, voltage problems, low stability margins, area interchange violations, unfeasible power flows, etc. Indirect characteristics deal with the IT and communication risks. Fuzzy measures have shown great promise for their ability to quickly and accurately predict the system security when trained with data collected from a small subset of system variables. This paper investigates the use of Sugeno fuzzy integral, coupled with a reuse-used ontology for power system security assessment.

This paper describes three fundamental pitfalls or caveats of empirical modeling of land-use decision making in agent-based models for land-use/cover change. A case study in the villages of Jambi Province (Sumatra), Indonesia, is presented to demonstrate the construction of empirical decision-making models using utility functions while taking into account these caveats. Incorporating the decision process as an option to deal with the drawbacks of cross-sectional data is recommended to better specify agents' behavior in the decision-making models.

decision algorithms correspond to the rule-based approach to classification and pattern recognition problems. While to shorten the processing time we need as few constituent decision rules as possible, when their number is too low it may lead to a poor performance of the classifier. The decision rules can be found by providing the minimal cover of the training samples, by calculating rules with some genetic algorithms, by the exhaustive search for all rules. This last option offers the widest choice of rules, which enables tailoring the final algorithm to the task at hand, yet this is achieved by the additional cost of rule selection process. Usually there are assumed some measures indicating the quality of individual decision rules. The paper presents a different procedure, which is closer to feature reduction. In the first step there are selected condition attributes that are discarded, then the rules that contain conditions on these attributes are removed from the algorithm. The classifier performance is observed in the domain of computational stylistics, which is a study on characteristics of writing styles.
