QoS-driven power and time allocation scheme for spectrum leasing in overlay cognitive radio networks

The coexistence of a primary user (PU) with a secondary user (SU) is studied in an overlay cognitive radio network (CRN) which is proposed as an efficient technique to treat with the problem of spectrum underutilisation. A cooperative spectrum leasing process under the decode and forward protocol is considered among the PU and SU. Assuming users' specific Quality of Service requirements, a joint power and time allocation scheme for maximising the PU's cooperative effective capacity subject to minimum SU's and PU's effective capacities and maximum SU's instantaneous power transmission constraints is proposed. Its performance is close to the optimal one, that is computed using the exhaustive search scheme. A two-step solution is applied considering the fundamentals of convex optimisation theory and closed-form power and time expressions are extracted. As simulation results prove, the proposed scheme outperforms a less sophisticated scheme considering power allocation under constant time. Finally, the proposed algorithm is incorporated in a multi-user CRN scenario where efficient matchings among the PUs and the SUs are investigated targeting to the increase of PUs' cooperative performance applying the matching theory.

Robust resource allocation for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing-based cooperative cognitive radio networks with imperfect channel state information

In this study, the authors study the robust resource allocation problem for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing-based cooperative cognitive radio networks (CRNs) with decode and forward protocol and consideration of imperfect channel state information. The objective is to maximise the capacity of the cooperative CRN, while the interference to primary user receiver is below a predefined interference threshold and the transmit power of cognitive source and each relay is kept within their power budgets. Considering all possible channel uncertainties, they propose a heuristic robust relay selection scheme and formulate robust power allocation as a semi-infinite programming (SIP). By the worst-case approach, the SIP problem is converted into a convex optimisation problem and solved by the Lagrange dual decomposition method. They also analyse feasible regions of the constraints, convergence behaviour and computational complexity of their proposed robust algorithm. Simulation results show the impact of channel uncertainties and the outperformance of the proposed algorithm by comparing with non-robust algorithms.

This paper studies the achievable rate of a relay-assisted optical wireless communication channel, and presents a novel discrete signaling method by our proposed symbol-number filling algorithm. Unlike the radio frequency counterpart, the signaling is designed subject to nonnegative, peak and average power constraints, taking the input-dependent Gaussian shot noise into account. decode and forward (DF) protocol is adopted by the relay, and is shown to outperform the direct transmission (DT) protocol. Further, the impact of relay placement on the rates is investigated on the two dimensional relay positions. The region where DF is better than DT is given and the maximal rate is shown to be achievable when the relay is placed in the middle of the source and destination link.

Link adaptive relaying (LAR) is one of the most popular techniques developed for mitigating error propagation in decode and forward (DF) based cooperative wireless networks which employs soft power scaling approaches at the relay nodes. On the other side, frequency shift keying (FSK) is a prominent technique for eliminating the need for channel estimation by training sequences which increases complexity of the system and causes reduction in the transmission rate in proportional to the number of users involved in the network. In this paper, performance of an LAR scheme with noncoherent binary FSK (BFSK) signaling is investigated by deriving exact closed form bit error rate expressions in Rayleigh fading channels.

In cooperative OFDM networks, ordered subcarrier pairing (OSP) at the relay has been shown to improve the average end-to-end capacity evidently. In this paper, the statistical performance evaluations are provide for two-hop OFDM relay link with both amplify-and-forward (AF) and decode-and-forward (DF) protocol. First, closed-form expressions are derived for the probability density function (PDF) of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the mapped subcarrier pair link. Second, the performance of average symbol error probability (SEP) is given. The efficiency of the analytical performance is demonstrated through simulation results.

Recent research developments show that the concept of bidirectional relaying significantly improves the performance in wireless networks. This applies to three-node networks, where a half-duplex relay node establishes a bidirectional communication between two other nodes using a decode-and-forward protocol. In this work we consider the scenario when in the broadcast phase the relay transmits additional confidential information to one node, which should be kept as secret as possible from the other, non-intended node. This is the bidirectional broadcast channel with confidential messages for which we derive the capacity-equivocation region and the secrecy capacity region. The latter characterizes the communication scenario with perfect secrecy, where the confidential message is completely hidden from the non-legitimated node.

Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) has recently developed as one of the most popular schemes to overcome multipath fading. Single carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) has also been adopted as an alternative of OFDMA for uplink transmission in UTRA LTE. To improve the performance of OFDMA and SC-FDMA, cooperative communication can be used. However, traditional cooperative protocol for multi-carrier system suffers with the issue of imperfect synchronization. TDMA scheme in which each node in the network transmits symbols in its dedicated time slot can solve the asynchronous problem but gives rise to large time delay. In this paper, a novel cooperative scheme by using spacetime network coding (STNC) for uplink SC-FDMA and downlink OFDMA system is proposed. For a SC-FDAM/OFDMA system consists of N users and R relay nodes, a full diversity order of 1 R + can be achieved while keeping the delay low and the issue of asynchronization is eliminated. Compare with the TDMA scheme where ( 1) N R+ time slots is required to complete the transmission of a symbol frame, only N R + time slots is needed in our proposed scheme by using STNC at relay nodes.
