On the outage performance of decode-and-forward based relay ordering in cognitive wireless sensor networks

In this paper, the issue of secondary network access in cognitive wireless sensor networks is investigated. An efficient scheme (in terms of both power and spectrum) named decode-and-forward based multi-relay scheme with relay ordering (DF-MRRO) is proposed for secondary network access. More important, this scheme is used to enhance the performance of secondary network. In an effort to assess the performance, the received signal-to interference-plus-noise ratio of both the primary and secondary links are derived, from which new exact closed-form expressions for the outage probability of primary and secondary networks are derived. Moreover, the diversity order is calculated for both the primary and secondary network. It is also shown that full diversity order can be achieved if the condition of power requirement is satisfied. Finally, simulation results obtained for the outage performance of the proposed scheme in primary and secondary networks prove the effectiveness of the proposed scheme. It also demonstrates that a maximum of 7 dB SNR gain can be achieved in the proposed DF-MRRO scheme.

Lifetime maximization via cooperative nodes and relay deployment in wireless networks

Extending lifetime of battery-operated devices is a key design issue that allows uninterrupted information exchange among distributed nodes in wireless networks. Cooperative communications has recently emerged as a new communication paradigm that enables and leverages effective resource sharing among cooperative nodes. In this paper, a general framework for lifetime extension of battery-operated devices by exploiting cooperative diversity is proposed. The framework efficiently takes advantage of different locations and energy levels among distributed nodes. First, a lifetime maximization problem via cooperative nodes is considered and performance analysis for M-ary PSK modulation is provided. With an objective to maximize the minimum device lifetime under a constraint on bit-error-rate performance, the optimization problem determines which nodes should cooperate and how much power should be allocated for cooperation. Since the formulated problem is NP hard, a closed-form solution for a two-node network is derived to obtain some insights. Based on the two-node solution, a fast suboptimal algorithm is developed for multi-node scenarios. Moreover, the device lifetime is further improved by a deployment of cooperative relays in order to help forward information of the distributed nodes in the network. Optimum location and power allocation for each cooperative relay are determined with an aim to maximize the, minimum device lifetime. A suboptimal algorithm is developed to solve the problem with multiple cooperative relays and cooperative nodes. Simulation results show that the minimum device lifetime of the network with cooperative nodes improves 2 times longer than the lifetime of the non-cooperative network. In addition, deploying a cooperative relay in a proper location leads up to 12 times longer lifetime than that of the non-cooperative network.

In this paper, we study hop-by-hop beamforming and combining in a decode-and-forward (DF) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay network, with two antennas at each node, over Nakagami-m fading channels. We derive a closed-form expression of the approximate average bit error rate of the considered cooperative scheme with M-ary phase shift keying constellation. In addition, analytical outage probability and diversity order of the considered DF MIMO relay system are also obtained.

In this letter, we consider the trans-modulation design for the decode-and-forward relay networks. We propose to reassign the constellation points at the relay nodes to minimize the symbol error rate (SER) at the destination node. The proposed trans-modulation scheme can significantly improve the system SER performance without increasing the complexity of the system, especially when the relays are close to the source. For this case, improvements of about 2 dB for 16-QAM constellation and about 3 dB for 64-QAM constellation are achieved for the single-relay case.

In this letter, we study the problem of adaptive modulation (AM) in cooperative decode-and-forward (DF) relaying systems with limited channel state information (CSI) of the source-relay link. We first develop the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR)-based opportunistic AM and obtain the regions of the source-destination and relay-destination link SNR, by which whether cooperative relaying is needed and what constellation size should be chosen can be determined without requiring the source-relay link CSI. We also propose the probabilistic AM to further enhance the transmission rate. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed AM criteria.

This paper investigates the performance of a non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) based two-way relaying system where the users want to exchange independent messages with the help of a decode-and-forward relay. We consider transmission over three phases where the first and second phases are allocated to the transmissions of the users and after detection the relay applies superposition coding and transmits the network encoded symbol to the users in the third phase. Exact analytical expressions are derived to characterize the achievable average rate of the system over independent Rayleigh fading channels. Computer simulations are also presented to confirm the theoretical analysis. Analytical and simulation results show that the proposed three-phase two-way relaying scheme with NOMA outperforms the two-phase and four-phase NOMA-based two-way relaying scenarios in terms of achievable average rate.

In this paper, we present an analysis of the hybrid satellite-terrestrial free-space optical (FSO) cooperative system. The analysis is performed under consideration of the decode-and-forward (DF) relaying protocol, where the FSO channel is assumed for relay-destination link. The land mobile satellite (LMS) link is described by two-state Lutz's model. The Gamma-Gamma distribution is used to model the intensity fluctuations of the optical signal caused by atmospheric turbulence. The outage probability expression is derived. Numerical results are presented. The effect of LMS link conditions, such as time-share of shadowing, as well as FSO link conditions, on the outage probability performance is investigated.

Channel estimation error problem is among the main causes of performance degradation in wireless networks. In this paper, we investigate the impact of channel estimation error on cooperative communications. We analyze the symbol error rate (SER) performance of decode-and-forward (DF) cooperative communications with channel estimation error over nakagami-m channels. For the classical three-node cooperation model, the exact SER expressions for M-PSK are derived. We also provide upper bound expressions for the SER. Simulations are finally provided to verify the correctness of our analysis. Given to high SNR, it shows that performance does not improve along with increasing SNR and the SER performance depends more on the channel link between relay and destination than link between source and relay.

A two-way relay channel with independent parallel Gaussian channels between the relay and the two terminals is considered. Focusing on the decode-and-forward protocol, the second phase of the communication, in which the relay broadcasts the two messages to their respective receivers, is studied. Precisely, the problem of computing the power allocation among the parallel channels that maximizes the weighted sum rate assuming arbitrarily distributed channel inputs (such as m-QAM) is stated and shown to be convex. A numerical algorithm is provided to solve the problem for the general case and, for the particular cases of high and low power regimes, expressions for the optimal power allocation are derived in closed form.

It is important to consider transceiver hardware impairments (i.e., imperfect electronic circuits) while designing practical communication systems. Most common transceiver imperfections are oscillator phase noise, I/Q imbalance, amplifier non-linearities, self-interference in a full duplex mode, etc. In this paper, the performance of a dual-hop decode-and-forward underlay cognitive radio network with transceiver hardware impairments and interference power constraints is studied. Closed-form expressions for the exact outage probability (OP) over independent and non-identically distributed Nakagami-m fading channels are presented. More, asymptotic analysis of the OP at high signal-to-noise-distortion ratio values is analyzed. A relation between the hardware impairment level and the transmission rate is investigated using numerical simulations. Hardware impairment level is evaluated for various fading severity parameters of the channel when OP and source power are given. Monte Carlo simulations results corroborate the analytical ones.
