We consider the problem of source coding with side information ( SI) at the decoder only, when the joint distribution between the source and the SI is not perfectly known. Four parametric models for this joint distribution are considered, where uncertainty about the distribution is turned into uncertainty about the value of the parameters. More precisely, a prior distribution for the parameters may or may not be available. Moreover, the value of the parameters may either change at every symbol or remain constant for a while. This paper overviews the results on the performance of lossless source coding with SI at the decoder for the four models. The way LDPC-based encoding and decoding schemes should be designed to cope with model uncertainty is provided. Most of the proposed practical schemes perform close to the theoretical limits.

Recently Linear Programming (LP) decoding is attracting much attention as an alternative to Belief Propagation (BP) decoding for LDPC codes. It is well known for the BP decoding that nonbinary LDPC codes can improve the decoding error probability considerably. On the other hand, Flanagan et al. proposed an LP decoding scheme for LDPC codes over finite rings. Although their scheme is applicable to LDPC codes over finite fields, the number of variables in the LP grows rapidly and hence, its implementation becomes harder as the field size increases. To overcome this defect we propose a new LP decoding scheme for GF(2(m)), in which the number of variables increases linearly in the field size. Although our scheme relaxes a maximum likelihood decoding problem more loosely to an LP problem than their scheme, the deterioration of the decoding error probability is small.

In this paper we propose joint network and channel coding schemes for cooperative networks. The joint decoding schemes require no adjustment to either the sending or intermediary network nodes, but are achieved by describing joint network code / channel code Tanner graphs at the receiving node and applying iterative sum-product decoding. The performance of the proposed schemes are simulated on a simple "butterfly" network and very promising results are obtained.

Bistable stochastic resonance (BSR) is a nonlinear phenomenon in which the weak periodic signal can be enhanced by a certain level of noise, and it reveals a possibility of turning the noise from a nuisance into a benefit. Later, the aperiodic stochastic resonance (ASR) (BSR system with aperiodic inputs) theory was proposed, which makes a combination of BSR theory with information theory. However, the latest researches on BSR are still confined to binary signal processing. This paper investigates multi-ary pulse amplitude modulated (MPAM) signal processing under additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) using BSR technique. First, we analyze the feasibility of using the BSR system to process the MPAM signal. On this basis, the mechanism of the BSR system response to MPAM signal inputs is elucidated, and a corresponding decoding scheme is proposed. Further, the expression of the decision threshold for decoding the MPAM signal is derived. Finally, simulation results are given to validate the effectiveness of our proposed scheme.

This paper presents a codeword metric calculation scheme in two step joint decoding of block coded signals in an overloaded multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system. In the previous literature, the two step joint decoding scheme has been proposed for the complexity reduction of joint maximum likelihood decoding in the overloaded MIMO system. However, the two step decoding scheme has not been combined with an outer code. The selection of the candidate codewords in the inner block code may not always be able to provide the metric of a binary coded symbol for the outer code. The metric of the binary coded symbol calculated in the first stage is used in the proposed scheme. It is shown that the proposed two step decoding scheme shows better performance than a bit flipping based scheme and reduces the complexity by about 0.013 for 4 signal streams with the cost of bit error rate degradation within 0.5dB.

Memristive devices are promising candidates for future high-density, power-efficient memories. The sneak path problem of purely-resistive crossbars and the inherent nanowire voltage drop, however, prevent the use of memristors in large-scale memory systems. In this paper we provide a simple yet flexible 3D memory organization and decoding scheme for memristive crossbars that exploits the benefits of the CMOL interface and avoid the limitations of conventional resistive crossbars. We propose an electrical model of the system to simulate and estimate its delay and energy consumption and show that such memories provide high read/write concurrency with power consumption per read/write operation that is significantly lower than that of DRAM.

This paper presents a candidate codeword selection scheme with bit flipping in two step joint decoding of block coded signals in an overloaded multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system. In previous literature, the two step joint decoding scheme has been proposed for complexity reduction of maximum likelihood decoding of a block code in the overloaded MIMO system. However, the two step decoding scheme has not been combined with an outer code. The selection of the candidate codewords in the inner block code may not always be able to provide the metric of a binary coded symbol for the outer code. Candidate codewords are then created through bit flipping in the proposed scheme. It is shown that the two step decoding scheme reduces the complexity by about 0.026 for 4 signal streams with the cost of bit error rate degradation within 0.5dB.

This paper presents a fully integrated CMOS microarray for biosensor applications. A 64-pixel working electrode array with optimized reference and counter electrode structure is proposed to improve symmetry, and the feature sizes of electrodes have been scaled down to 600nm. The circuit utilizes the decoding scheme of memories to simplify the pixel design while shares potentiostat opamp and current amplifers, which allows the miniaturization of electrodes and enables large-scale integration of the microarray. The demo is fabricated in 0.18 mu m CMOS technology, and experimental results successfully demonstrated the biosensing detections on the nanoscale microarray. The circuit provides a current gain of 19.9dB, 3dB bandwidth of 15kHz, dynamic range of 141dB, sensing sensitivity of 37.6pA, and a driving capability of 0.46mA, respectively.

This paper investigates the performance of an overloaded multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system with a repetition code. It has been demonstrated that diversity with block coding prevents the performance degradation induced by signal multiplexing. However, the computational complexity of a joint decoding scheme increases exponentially with the number of multiplexed signal streams. Thus, this paper proposes the use of a repetition code in the overloaded MIMO-OFDM system. In addition, QR decomposition with M-algorithm (QRM) maximum likelihood decoding (MLD) is applied to the decoding of the repetition code. QRM-MLD significantly reduces the amount of joint decoding complexity. In addition, virtual antennas are employed in order to increase the throughput that is reduced by the repetition code. It is shown that the proposed scheme reduces the complexity by about 1/48 for 6 signal streams with QPSK modulation while the BER degradation is less than 0.1dB at the BER of 10(-3).

In this work, we propose an enhanced fruit fly optimization (EnFFO) to solve the flexible job shop scheduling problem with the consideration of lot streaming, the criterion of which is total flowtime minimization. In EnFFO, the multi-swarm scheme is utilized to balance the exploitation and exploration ability. To better match the two sub-problems in FJSP, we introduce new solution representation and decoding scheme. In addition, considering characteristics of multi-swarm FFO and FJSP, adaptive search scheme and information interaction tactics are presented to strengthen search performance of the algorithm. Finally, comparisons with recent algorithms verify the superiority of the proposed EnFFO for the considered problem.
