High Spatial Resolution BOTDA Based on deconvolution and All Phase Digital Filtering

Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA) technology plays an important role in distributed monitoring fields. However, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is often degraded in the process of improving the sensing spatial resolution. Therefore, we propose a high spatial resolution BOTDA demodulation scheme based on a deconvolution algorithm complemented by all phase discrete Fourier transform (APDFT) digital filter. Initially, deconvolution algorithm is employed to improve the spatial resolution of the system. Subsequently, APDFT is used to filter out the noise in the signal, thereby improving the SNR while maintaining high spatial resolution. The results show that the sensing spatial resolution is optimized to 43 cm under a 40 ns pulsewidth in a 5.1 km sensing fiber and an enhancement in SNR by 6.5 dB is achieved compared to without denoising. The proposed scheme has a capability to achieve a heightened spatial resolution without upgrading the hardware devices of the BOTDA system.

Luciferase reporters have become standard genetic tools to monitor gene expression in real time and in high-throughput using microplate readers. Compared to reporter gene assays based on fluorescence proteins, luciferase reporters have a superior signal-to-noise ratio, since they do not suffer from the high autofluorescence background of the bacterial cell. However, at the same time luciferase reporters have the drawback of constant light emission, which leads to undesired cross-talk between neighboring wells on a microplate. To overcome this limitation, we developed a computational method to correct for luminescence bleed-through and to estimate the "true" luminescence activity for each well of a microplate. As the sole input our algorithm uses the signals measured from a calibration plate, in which the light emitted from a single luminescent well serves as an estimate for the "light-spread function". We show that this light-spread function can be used to deconvolve any other measurement obtained under the same technical conditions. Our analysis demonstrates that the correction preserves low-level signals close to the background and shows that it is universally applicable to different kinds of microplate readers and plate types.

A POLYEXPONENTIAL deconvolution METHOD - EVALUATION OF THE GASTROINTESTINAL BIOAVAILABILITY AND MEAN INVIVO DISSOLUTION TIME OF SOME IBUPROFEN DOSAGE FORMS

A new deconvolution algorithm (DCON) suitable for pharmacokinetic applications is presented. It requires that both the impulse and input responses, typically systemic drug levels, be well described by polyexponential equations. DCON has a wider range of applications than an earlier method (DECONV) from which it is derived. A FORTRAN program is provided, making implementation of the technique a simple matter. DCON is demonstrated to evaluate the "GI bioavailability" defined as the rate and the extent of gastrointestinal drug release, of various ibuprofen dosage forms. The GI drug release kinetics exemplifies a pharmacokinetic system which cannot be evaluated using the previous deconvolution algorithm (DECONV) because of an initial zero drug level response. This limitation is not found in DCON. It is also demonstrated how the mean in vivo dissolution time MDT can be evaluated by deconvolution.

Study on deconvolution algorithms for Optical Coherent Tomography

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a novel tool for biomedical imaging in recent years. The noninvasive cross-section images have longitudinal resolution of a few micrometers, which is applicable to detect small organizations and structures, and the resolution is limited by the wavelength and spectrum bandwidth of the light source. Based on an interferometric OCT and following the coherence theory, a linear shift invariant system model describing coherent light specimen interactions in OCT is presented. In this study, the axial point spread function (PSF) is obtained, and the image of a double-cover-glass phantom was restored and enhanced the image sharpness by using the constrained iterative restoration (CIR) algorithm. Another deconvolution method, non-negativity and support constraints recursive inverse filtering (NAS-RIF) blind deconvolution algorithm, is also used in this study. In onion image, restored by using NAS-RIF algorithm, shows better quality than using iterative algorithm.

We demonstrate that near-field optical and atomic force microscopy data can be used for super-resolution three-dimensional (3-D) image restoration in optical sectioning fluorescence microscopy. A crucial feature in this approach is the full integration of such data sets with digital far-field images. The scanned probe data is used to provide modalities for boundary constraints which define surface optical information and spatial domains of optical alterations in a sample with a spatial precision that has been unachievable in the past. A restoration algorithm that can use such a complex of data for 3-D image deconvolution is presented. It uses a Tikhonov-Miller regularization scheme and allows for the imposition of different types of constraints to obtain super-resolution deconvolved images. Performance was tested by using simulated 3-D imaging. An example is given of the restoration of a 3-D wide field optical image of a biological specimen in the presence of atomic force constraints.

A study on neutron energy spectrum estimation by LaBr3:Ce detector

A novel approach to estimation of neutron energy spectrum by LaBr3:Ce detector which was usually used for gamma rays measurement was presented. In this approach, energy distribution of the neutron flux was devided into several bins, and simultaneous equations of these bins were setup based on the net counts of gamma peaks induced by neutron inelastic scattering with LaBr3:Ce detector. With these equations, the neutron energy spectrum was derived by a deconvolution algorithm. This approach was tested using a 3 in.x3 in. LaBr3:Ce detector exposured to an Am-241-Be neutron source and proved practicable.

On different tag reader architectures for bistable microwires

A bistable microwire reader is an inductive type sensor that measures the fast magnetic flux reversals in ferromagnetic microwires having predominant longitudinal magnetisation. The signal processing in such readers is a challenging problem due to short induced pulses, pile up effect, pickup noise, and ringing distortion in the pickup coils. In our present work, analog and digital reading schemes for multi-bit tags made of several bistable microwires have been proposed. The performance of an analog reader can be sufficient for well separated pulses. However, the digital algorithms deliver a clearer output signal with better pulse resolution in the case of the pulse pile up effect. In turn, this enables reliable code recognition. Here, two digital algorithms have been tested. The digital low-pass Gauss filter effectively suppresses the pickup noise and ringing oscillations. The deconvolution algorithm constitutes the inverse task with respect to the convolution operator defining the pickup voltage output. This algorithm recovers the initial pulse profiles and provides the highest possible resolution of a pulse series. The obtained results will be useful for the creation of a robust reader for bistable microwire tags that can be implemented in recycling projects, marking of items, and fraud protection. Omni-directional guided wave transducer arrays for the rapid inspection of large areas of plate structures

Omni-directional guided wave array transducers contain a circular pattern of elements that individually behave as omni-directional point transmitters or receivers. The data set acquired from such an array contains time-domain signals from each permutation of transmitter and receiver. A phased addition algorithm is developed that allows an omni-directional, B-scan image of the surrounding plate to be synthesized from any geometry of array. Numerically simulated data from a single reflector is used to test the performance of the algorithm. The results from an array containing a fully populated circular area of elements (Type I array) are found to be good, but those from an array containing a single ring of elements (Type II array) contain many large side-lobes. An enhancement to the basic-phased addition algorithm is presented that uses deconvolution to suppress these side-lobes. The deconvolution algorithm enables a Type II array to equal the performance of a Type I array of the same overall diameter. The effect of diameter on angular resolution is investigated. Experimental data obtained from a guided wave array containing electromagnetic acoustic transducers (EMAT) elements for exciting and detecting the So Lamb wave mode in a 5-mm thick aluminium plate are processed with both algorithms and the results are discussed.

The paper presents a theoretical system model of the monaural signal processing in the human auditory system. Moreover, it deals with the application of this hearing model to the calculation of just-noticeable amplitude differences and variations, as well as elementary psychoacoustic parameters and a deconvolution algorithm for the detection of dominant spectral components based on the excitation pattern of the basilar membrane. The use of the hearing model for sound quality tasks allows evaluating the temporal and spectral patterns of a sound ("Relative Approach" analysis) where absolute level or loudness is often without significance. A deconvolutional Reconstruction Method Based on Lucy-Richardson algorithm for Joint Scanning Laser Thermography

Joint scanning laser thermography (JLST) is well-known for its efficiency to overcome the field of view (FOV) limitation of thermal imagers. However, JSLT requires a data reconstruction to reveal the location of the defective area straightforwardly. Moreover, its detection capacity is limited by the lack of a deconvolution algorithm adaptive to the reconstructed data. In this study, a deconvolutional reconstruction method based on the Lucy-Richardson (LR) algorithm has been developed for JST, which is effective in suppressing random noise and the blur effect caused by the thermal diffusion. A JSLT inspection is carried out on a functional coating material with cylinder-like defects to test the performance of the proposed method. In comparison to the directly processed method on the original data, the proposed method is processed on the reconstructed data and then compared with principal component analysis (PCA), restored pseudo heat flux (RPHF), fast Fourier transform (FFT) methods and non-negative matrix factorization (NMF). The experimental results indicated that our proposed LR method exhibited a higher signal-to-noise ratio. Besides, it can detect the cylinder-mocked debonding defects with a diameter of 1.5 mm and a depth of 2.0 mm buried under the 1.0-mm coating. In addition, the defect detection diameter-to-depth ratio reached 1.5, while the defect detection rate of the test specimens can approach 90%.
