Kinetic analysis of fullerene C60 thermal degradation via deconvolution method

This study aims to employ the deconvolution method to investigate the thermal oxidation kinetics of fullerene C-60 under non-isothermal conditions where STA (TGA-DSC) with various heating rates was used. Results revealed that the oxidation rate curves consisting of two overlapped peaks are composed of three steps deconvoluted by the Frazer-Suzuki function. Afterward, the kinetic analyses were conducted for each step to determine kinetic parameters. The kinetic model F-1 (first-order reaction;g(alpha) = -ln(1-alpha)) was identified for steps (I) and (II) with E approximate to 115 and 108 kJ mol(-1) and lnA = 12.2, and 11.4 min(-1), respectively, and the model R3 (contracting sphere model;g (alpha) = 1-(1-alpha)(1/3)) was determined as the rate-controlling mechanism of step (III), with E approximate to 122 kJ mol(-1 )and lnA = 13.8 min(-1). Electron microscopes like FESEM and TEM were employed to confirm the models obtained for the oxidation process. The results obtained in the case of fullerene C60, with presented thermal oxidation kinetic analyses based on the deconvolution method, indicate that this method can be regarded as a very valuable technique for studying thermal stabilities and complex oxidation kinetics of solid nanomaterials.

The output pulses of NaI(Tl) detectors have long tails due to the long decay constant of their output circuits, and these pulses easily pile up in high-count-rate environments. In this study, we used digital deconvolution combined with a digital filtering algorithm to restore piled-up pulses as separate, narrow, Gaussian-like pulses. Radioactive isotopes were used to calibrate the amplitudes of the signals processed by the proposed method. The gamma spectra with different methods were obtained to verify the proposed methods. Count rates were tested at various source-detector distances, and Monte Carlo simulation data verified that the error was within 14.60 % for count rates up to 1661 kHz. Compared to a commercial digitizer, for event rates up to 851 kHz, the proposed method increased the count rate by a factor of 53 and increased the energy resolution from 21.44 % to 15.50 %, while the energy resolution without pile-up was the same as that of the digitizer.

The broadband pulsed electromagnetic (EM) field measurement is significant in the analysis of electromagnetic compatibility. As an efficient measurement method, the D-Dot sensor has good performance. However, the integration method sometimes shows flaws due to the non-ideal frequency response or noise. We propose a deconvolution method based on the Maximum A Posteriori method (MAP). In the practical signal recovery test, the method performs better than the integration method. The adaptability is also tested on four types of different signals. Furthermore, we discuss the influence of white Gaussian noise (WGN) and quantization noise. The relationship between the relative error and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of WGN is given. When the SNR of WGN is greater than 30 dB, the relative error can be reduced under 10%. Besides, when the SNR of quantization noise is greater than 30 dB, the relative error can be reduced to under 30%.

Kinetic analysis of thermal degradation of betanin at various pH values using deconvolution method

Although betanin is commonly used as a water-soluble red colorant in foods, it is unstable when heated. In this study, the discoloration of betanin in a buffer solution was kinetically studied in the pH range of 2.6 to 7.6 at 40 ?C to 80 ?C. The absorption spectrum of betanin was deconvoluted into the spectra of betanin and its degradation product, betalamic acid. Subsequently, a reversible consecutive reaction, in which betanin was reversibly degraded to betalamic acid, and betalamic acid was further degraded, was assumed to calculate the first-order rate constant of each step. The apparent reaction mechanism varied depending on the pH values. Based on these rate constants, the activation energy of each process, as well as the equilibrium constant and enthalpy change for the reversible reaction between betanin and betalamic acid were evaluated.

Identifying genuine protein-protein interactions within communities of gene co-expression networks using a deconvolution method

Direct relationships between biological molecules connected in a gene co-expression network tend to reflect real biological activities such as gene regulation, protein-protein interactions (PPIs), and metabolisation. As correlation-based networks contain numerous indirect connections, those direct relationships are always 'hidden' in them. Compared with the global network, network communities imply more biological significance on predicting protein function, detecting protein complexes and studying network evolution. Therefore, identifying direct relationships in communities is a pervasive and important topic in the biological sciences. Unfortunately, this field has not been well studied. A major thrust of this study is to apply a deconvolution algorithm on communities stemming from different gene co-expression networks, which are constructed by fixing different thresholds for robustness analysis. Using the fifth Dialogue on Reverse Engineering Assessment and methods challenge (DREAM5) framework, the authors demonstrate that nearly all new communities extracted from a 'deconvolution filter' contain more genuine PPIs than before deconvolution.

Experimental results of imaging objects in turbid liquid integrating multiview circularly polarized speckle images and deconvolution method

We hereby suggest and experimentally demonstrated an approach to enhance image quality during recovery of objects hidden in turbid liquid by fusion of single-shot multi-view circularly polarized speckle images collected by lens array and deconvolution algorithm based multiple medium sub-PSFs viewpoints. Circular polarized light was used since it has superior polarization memory enable deeper probing within turbid media. Experiments were carried out in transmission mode upon targets (transmitted and opaque) of different geometric shapes embedded within turbid liquid media of commercial instant coffee blended in lukewarm water at varied concentrations. The media were illuminated by circular polarized laser beam and multiple circular polarized speckled images were captured by camera. To counter the effect of scattering noises, multiple object images and Wiener deconvolution algorithm based multiple medium PSFs acquisition were shifted to a common center and then fused together to yield reconstructed images of the hidden objects. Following experiments, we demonstrated that by fusion of multiple images a better reconstruction was obtained as compared to the use of a single imaging lens. For a quantitative comparison, some common image quality metrics were used to evaluate the reconstruction quality. In addition, a phase only filter was applied during the deconvolution and its performance was compared with Wiener filtering. Overall, the feasibility of the proposed technique is proven by the experimental results. This work can be beneficial for application to imaging hidden targets buried in turbid system such as biological medium, fog, smoke, rain, etc. and therefore has potential for a wide variety of applications in medical diagnostics, security, sensing, underwater imaging, and more.

Evaluation of Lightning Current From Magnetic Field Based on deconvolution method

This article proposes the deconvolution method to evaluate the lightning channel-base current from the lightning magnetic field. We have verified the method using the magnetic field with/without noises. The deconvolution results are both in good agreement with the simulated current. Also, we have discussed the deconvolution results when the condition number of the deconvolution matrix, U-0, is different, and found that the deconvolution results will oscillate if the condition number of U-0 is very large. Note that the deconvolution method presented in this paper also works when using other engineering current models, such as transmission line (TL) model, and the modified TL model with exponential current decaying with height model, and so on. The deconvolution method is an efficient method to evaluate the lightning channel-base current from the electromagnetic field. This approach is also useful in research related to lightning characteristics and lightning protection.

Dual-Frequency Polarized Scatterometer (DFPSCAT) is a new system utilizing Doppler beam sharpening (DBS) technology for azimuthal resolution enhancement. Considering the DBS technology is inapplicable for the middle areas of the swath, a theoretical framework of deconvolution signal processing is proposed to improve resolution. A deconvolution method of the nonlocally centralized sparse representation (NCSR) is adopted to verify its feasibility, and simulation results show that the deconvolution method have obviously better resolution enhancement and higher recovery accuracy than these of the classical scatterometer image reconstruction (SIR) method.

Our earlier work has demonstrated that the data consistency condition can be used as a criterion for scatter kernel optimization in deconvolution methods in a full-fan mode cone-beam CT [1]. However, this scheme cannot be directly applied to CBCT system with an offset detector (half-fan mode) because of transverse data truncation in projections. In this study, we proposed a modified scheme of the scatter kernel optimization method that can be used in a half-fan mode cone-beam CT, and have successfully shown its feasibility. Using the first-reconstructed volume image from half-fan projection data, we acquired full-fan projection data by forward projection synthesis. The synthesized full-fan projections were partly used to fill the truncated regions in the half-fan data. By doing so, we were able to utilize the existing data consistency-driven scatter kernel optimization method. The proposed method was validated by a simulation study using the XCAT numerical phantom and also by an experimental study using the ACS head phantom.

Thermal behaviour analysis of lithium-ion battery at elevated temperature using deconvolution method

The fire and explosion potential risk of Li-ion battery is mainly caused by thermal runaway reactions. A deconvolution method has been proposed to analyze the complex thermal reactions obtained from a reaction, isothermal and scanning calorimeter (C80 microcalorimeter) in this paper. Thermal behaviours of both single electrode system and full cell system under elevated temperature are clearly identified, and separate kinetics is calculated based on the deconvoluted data. According to the analysis, thermal runaway reactions of LixCoO2/LixC6 full cell system are comprised by the solid electrolyte interface (SE!) breakdown, melting of separator, short circuit of positive-negative materials, LixCoO2 disproportionation, lithium (in LixC6)-electrolyte reaction, further decomposition of LixCoO2, oxidation of decomposition products of electrolyte and thermal reactions involving polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), etc. The thermal stability of SEI heat generation of positive material and melting temperature of separator are identified as the critical factors that influence the thermal stability of full cell. It is possible to utilize the method for the thermal analysis and the identification of the key factors to thermal control of Li-ion batteries for energy storage and power supply applications.
