Changing Representations During Search: A Comparative Study of delta coding

delta coding is an iterative genetic search strategy that dynamically changes the representation of the search space in an attempt to exploit different problem representations. delta coding sustains search by reinitializing the population at each iteration of search. This helps to avoid the asymptotic performance typically observed in genetic search as the population becomes more homogeneous. Here, the optimization ability of delta coding is empirically compared against CHC, ESGA, GENITOR, and random mutation hill-climbing (RMHC) on a suite of well-known test functions with and without Gray coding. Issues concerning the effects of Gray coding on these test functions are addressed.

In this study, we develop an efficient lossless ECG compression based on delta coding and optimal selective Huffman coding and implement the proposed algorithm in the S3C2440 development board. The delta coding is applied to reduce the dynamic range of the original ECG signals. The optimal selective Huffman coding is used to enhance the computation efficiency of canonical Huffman coding. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, a 10-min ECG recordings (MIT100) which is a normal sinus rhythm taken from the MIT/BIH database were applied to the coding experiments. Comparing with the canonical Huffman coding algorithm, the proposed algorithm has gained much improvement on the computation efficiency by 211.2% when the first 63 frequently occurring codewords are selected, although slightly sacrificing the compression rate by 0.34%.

Genetic algorithms are becoming increasingly popular as a tool for optimization in signal processing environments due to their tolerance for noise. Several types of genetic algorithms are compared against a mutation driven stochastic hill-climbing algorithm on a standard set of benchmark functions which have had Gaussian noise added to them. The genetic algorithms used in these comparisons include an elitist simple genetic algorithm, the CHC adaptive search algorithm, and delta coding. Finally several hybrid genetic algorithms are described and compared on a very large and noisy seismic data imaging problem.

The use of digital medical images is increasing very fast. Medical images, like CT scan, Ultrasound, Dental X-ray etc, require large amounts of memory storage. Even to transmit an image over a wireless or LAN network could take more time. Due to this reason medical image compression is important. Related to medical images many compression methods are available. However, the lossless (for diagnostic and legal reasons) techniques, which allow for perfect reconstruction of the original images, yield compression rates of at most 2 only, while the techniques that yield higher compression rates are lossy. To meet this challenge, we have developed a hybrid compression schemes which is diagnostically lossless with good compression ratio. Due to its simplicity the hardware realisation is also easy and cost effective compare to JPEG method.

To resolve action potentials, neural recording systems require microvolt resolution. Although the maximum amplitudes of action potentials and local field potentials are in the millivolt range, such systems typically cover a much larger full scale to account for electrode offsets, drifts, and artifacts. The number of bits required to cover this range is much larger than the actual bits required to represent the data. This means that miniaturized probes with in-situ digitization require not only a larger digital area, but also a large amount of power to transmit the data to the host. This paper presents a method for reducing the data rate in neural probes with direct A/D conversion based on digital delta encoding. Data sets from in-vivo experiments are statistically analyzed to determine the number of bits sufficient for delta data transmission. Furthermore, a control system is presented that implements automatic common-mode adjustment and compensates for electrode offsets and drifts, enabling delta encoding with DC-coupled recording.

A new electrocardiogram (ECG) lossy compression scheme has been developed. The algorithm can reach high compression ratios with a reduced error which makes it suitable for real-time electrocardiogram monitoring. The new algorithm is based on delta coding technique. Low and high coding categories were made to encode the differences and insure an optimized compressed signal. In addition the number of successive coded differences is flexible and defined with a window size. A new frame format was developed to transmit data. The algorithm has been verified using multiple and most frequent normal and pathological types of cardiac signals from MIT-BIH physionet data bases. The algorithm can reach a mean compression ratio of 33.45 and a mean PRD of 0.25%. The proposed algorithm has a low complexity and is very suitable for hardware designs.

The purpose of the compression is the minimization of the data storage space, the transmission time or the bandwidth. If the wavelets and specifically wavelets packets bases provide an appropriate framework for the selection of an optimal representation of electromyographic (EMG) signals, the choice of encoding method optimizes the compression ratio without altering the compressed data. In compression, it is usual to fix as goal either a compression ratio to achieve or a minimum acceptable quality of the reconstructed signal. In this work, the novelty is that we have obtained the compression ratio without fixing anything;and the results obtained are better than those given by the modified compression algorithm proposed in [6] as association of coding methods was not used there.

Wireless ECG devices are the latest novelty in the field of electrocardiography. ECG is commonly used in healthcare systems to observe cardiac activity, however wireless devices bring new challenges to the field of ECG monitoring. These challenges include limited battery capacity, as well as increased data storage requirements caused by daily uninterrupted ECG measurements. Both of these issues can be mitigated by introducing an efficient compression technique. This paper explores two direct data compression methods for ECG data: delta coding and Huffman coding, as well as their variations. We performed experiments both on measurements from a wireless ECG sensor - the Savvy ECG sensor, as well as on measurements from a standard public ECG database - the MIT-BIH Arrhythmia Database. We were able to select suitable parameters for delta coding for efficient compression of multiple ECG recordings from the Savvy ECG sensor, with a compression ratio of 1.6.

Kromě použití klasických algoritmů je snaha využít vlastností medicínských dat (tj. že obsahují hodně podobných obrazových bodů) pro jejich lepší kompresi. Ověříme si účinnek delta kódování na výsledný kompresní poměr a na závěr uvedeme naši nejlepší nalezenou metodu.

A 0.5 V 54 μW Ultra-Low-Power Object Matching Processor for Micro Air Vehicle Navigation

An ultra-low-power object matching processor is proposed for the autonomous micro air vehicle (MAV) navigation systems. For the ultra-low power consumption, it adopts four low-power features: 1) a 4-point scale-invariant generalized Hough transform (4P-SIGHT) to reduce the computational cost by 51%, 2) a feature streaming pipeline (FSP) to lower the operating frequency by 40%, 3) a Huffman and delta decoder (HDD) to reduce the memory readouts by 35.3%, and 4) a small-area and wide-operating-range 10-transistor level shifter (10T-LS) for the near-threshold voltage (NTV) operation. The proposed 2.0 mm(2) object matching processor is fabricated using 65 nm CMOS technology and it consumes only 54 mu W at 5 MHz operating frequency and 0.5 V supply voltage while processing QVGA resolution video in 30 fps. It is successfully applied to the MAV and shows 93.5% recognition accuracy for the autonomous navigation. It provides 9.35 x better energy efficiency than previous state-of-the-art object matching processors.
