Tests on Armature Resistance of Synchronous Machines

Armature resistance of synchronous machines, although usually disregarded when making torque-angle and excitation calculations, must be taken into account when making an accurate analysis. Values of armature resistance obtained in a series of tests are presented in this paper, which is a companion paper to “Test Values of Armature Leakage Reactance” in this issue, pages 700–5. Discussion of test methods, the effect of pole form on losses, and the use of effective armature resistance in determining the vector diagram of the machine are included herein. Two multipath schemes have been put forward: primary/backup mode and replication mode. Both schemes have not efficiently combined load balancing and energy awareness in sensor networks. This paper proposes an energy-aware load-balancing delivery scheme. The packets can be transmitted along multiple paths according to Decisive Energy Ratio (DER). It needs not calculate DER periodically and brings fewer overheads. DER with Overload Avoidance (DEROA) is also proposed to avoid heavy traffic on some critical nodes. The simulations demonstrate how well DER will achieve multipath delivery.

In the recent past there has been an increasing demand for area and energy efficient on-chip implementation of Machine Learning techniques. In this context we have proposed area and power optimized architectures for hardware implementation of a recently proposed supervised learning technique named Network Rewiring (NRW) for Dendritically Enhanced Readout(DER). We show that for the most optimized architecture there is a 8.5 times reduction in critical resources while the MAE has increased only by 1.76% compared to the non-optimized architecture. Moreover, for accommodating real-time training, we have also proposed an online version of the NRW rule. We also show that, though this online algorithm uses an averaging circuit having 4200 times lesser time constant compared to batch learning, yet it provides comparable performance due to the introduction of a voting mechanism.

This paper describes an example of publishing a part of sensor-network data collected within INERTIA EU FP7 project pilot sites in Greece as Linked Data. More specifically, the data are extracted from sensors/actuators installed in the pilot premises capturing energy performance of a wide range of distributed energy resources (DER) as well as the building occupants' behaviour in the pilot areas. The enabling this data source as Linked Open Data endpoint was realised following the methodology developed within READY4SmartCities project.

The transition towards a cyber-physical energy system (CPES) entails an increased dependency on valid data. Simultaneously, an increasing implementation of renewable generation leads to possible control actions at individual distributed energy resources (DERs). A state estimation covering the whole system, including individual DER, is time consuming and numerically challenging. This paper presents the approach and results of implementing a simplified state estimator onto an embedded system for improving DER monitoring. The implemented state estimator is based on numerically robust orthogonal factorization and used on a set of state equations of a generic wind turbine generator (WTG). The simplified state estimator is tested by simulating a generic WTG model and evaluated based on its execution time and estimation accuracy. Results show its fast execution time, its accuracy in handling normal measurement error and its ability to provide reliable data in the case of gross errors in the set of measurements.

Campus microgrid is composed of distributed energy resources (DER) including distributed generation (DG), controllable loads, and storage. In this paper, the role of high reliability distribution system (HRDS) in microgrid operations is evaluated. The HRDS implemented at Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) is used as a case study along with DER to increase the load point reliability and decrease the operation cost of the microgrid.

EPRI's Smart Grid Demonstration Initiative is focused on collaborating with electric utilities around the world and helping to advance the industry in regards to integrating Distributed Energy Resources (DER). An important aspect of these demonstration projects is the evolution of a smart distribution systems making integration of DER possible. A wide variety of factors play into every electric utilities strategy on deploying smart grid technologies including regulatory environment, age and functionality of existing assets, communication infrastructure, geography, reliability, cost to implement, and associated benefits. What appears to be a common technology implementation is actually very unique from one utility to the next and is therefore very important that the industry shares knowledge and lessons learned to help advance the industry. This paper provides several examples of integration approaches and early project results along with information on how to keep aware of the project status through 2014.

TE has probably supplanted smart grid and high RPS as the buzzword shortcut to refer to ongoing discussions, pilot projects, and policy considerations. The state of New York has gone so far as to formulate and issue policy around the distribution system platform provider (DSPP), which is a platform of market functions intended to enable customer and third-party market interactions around energy and ancillary service products with distributed energy resources (DER s) on the distribution system or behind the meter. New York is embarking on a program of pilot or proof-concept *** activity throughout the country that involves TE development.

Distributed Resources in the Smart Grid, such as Distributed Generation (DG) and Responsive Loads (RL) are capable of providing a wide range of ancilliary services, if properly coordinated. However, because of their large numbers and distributed nature, using a fully centralized communication structure to achieve coordination can be prohibitive, due to scale and cost. Decentralized approaches based on multi-agent systems theory have been proposed and are focused on linear consensus algorithms that asymptotically converge to a cooperative solution. In this paper, an alternative approach, which converges in a finite number of steps is formulated. The protocol is based on linear iterative updates and known observability results from graph structured linear systems. Here, the protocol is also modified to address a generalized cooperation problem in the context of DG/ RL coordination. Furthermore, the protocol is modified to reduce the number of operations per step, ensuring that it is applicable to a large scale grid, which is usually the case in practice. The applicability of the approach is verified through simulations, for the case of grid voltage support through Distributed Generation.
