The business environment of distribution networks is changing rapidly. Electricity price rises and technology advances, particularly in distributed energy resources such as solar PV and battery storage, mean that customers have new choices for their energy supply. Adoption of these new technologies, together with more efficient appliances, is leading to changing network utilisation which can contribute to rising electricity prices. Electricity tariffs that are not cost reflective, are also contributing to market distortions. This paper describes the results from an application of cost reflective tariffs with customers that have distributed energy resources within a single Ergon Energy low voltage network.

This article summarizes the efforts of European network operators to adopt a holistic approach to their research and innovation (R&I) activities. Transmission system operators (TSOs) in Europe represented by ENTSO-E and distribution system operators (DSOs) represented by EDSO-SG, as well as organizations such as European Technology Platform Smart Grids (ETP SmartGrids), regularly publish and update road maps, implementation plans, and strategic research agendas. These documents are closely related to each other, aiming at ensuring a coordinated approach to grids and the integration of new technologies. As a package, all of this activity is tailored to addressing the challenges network operators face in meeting many overarching energy policy goals at the pan-European level.

The Reforming the Energy Vision, is an ambitious project initiated by NYS Governor Andrew Cuomo in 2015 to, in part, integrate Distributed Energy Resources, in an effort to transform New York State's electric transmission and distribution system for the 21 st Century. One aspect of the program has placed the integration of Solar & Wind power generation projects on to the Operating Companies Networks into high gear. Even with NYS statutes on how the Utilities are to accept all qualified electric generators into their systems, there still remains some discretion in how the individual Utilities may accomplish this effort. Consequently, each Operating Company may have a set of rules and regulations as to how the connection shall be made. This leads to more questions than answers. To gain knowledge about different aspects of the project we started to learn more detail about the project and various potential approaches to get to the goal. We are also studying variations in the imperative system parameters before and after distributed integration. In this presentation we will present our initial study on some approaches and critical parameters that we think are important for the system design based upon the regulations from the NYS Department of Public Service. Discussion will also include technologies, design approaches and challenges to determine the practicality and feasibility of distributed integration in a power system from an economic as well as operational point of view.

An ever growing share of renewable energy resources in the distribution grid imposes fluctuating and hardly predictable feed-in and thus demands new control strategies. On the other hand, combined with controllable, shiftable loads and battery capacity, these energy units set up new flexibility potentials for ICT-based control. So far, many approaches for harnessing this potential neglect the indispensable grid compliance of scheduling results due to the high computational complexity. We present a hybrid approach that enables distributed, agent-based algorithms for predictive energy planning to incorporate grid friendly behavior into agents' decision routines. We propose a scheme using a covariance matrix adaption evolution strategy (CMA-ES) for deciding on grid compliant solutions in a many-objective approach. The integration with an agent-based greedy algorithm for decentralized predictive scheduling is demonstrated and the effectiveness of the approach is shown by several simulation experiments.

Industrial power systems in the mining and metal industries typically comprise several large and fluctuating loads, such as crushers, excavators, shovels, and steel mills. Flexible distribution of energy and storage resources (FDERS) is a proposed new framework for reliably regulating the quickly varying loads supplied by a network of multiple smaller-rated distributed energy resources (DERs), especially when power from the main grid is not available. It was inspired by the cooperative V-shape formation of flocks of birds and the peloton/echelon formation of cycling racing teams for extending their endurance limits. Similar ideas applied to integrating DERs can extend sustainability through increased resource lifetime, optimal energy storage deployment, enhanced controllability, and improved system robustness.

The aim of this paper is to discuss the automatic threshold peak detection method. An automatic threshold peak detection algorithm is simulated with a control signal in MATLAB to determine ability to detect different signal types. A comparison is made between automatic chromatographic peak detection, adaptive threshold detection, peak of Shannon energy envelop detection, and automatic multiscale peak detection. Based on the experiment results, automatic threshold peak detection can perform peak detection for sinusoidal or triangular signal but not pulse signal. Other algorithms can perform peak detection for pulse signal but not sinusoidal or triangular signal. Automatic threshold peak detection is about 4.47 times faster than peak of Shannon energy envelop and 3980 times faster than automatic multiscale peak detection; however, automatic threshold peak detection is about twice as slow as the adaptive threshold method and automatic chromatographic peak detection.

Due to lack of the “Source-network-load” global perception and multiple time-scale situation awareness, the current distribution network cannot meet the requirements of the active distribution network (ADN) such as active control and active management. An ADN situation awareness system based on distributed monitoring and multi-source information fusion is proposed in this paper. By constructing a multi-level distributed monitoring system based on Internet of Things (IOT) technology, monitoring objects of distribution network are expanded to achieve global awareness in spatial scale. In the light of the randomness and volatility risk of distribution network operation, it is necessary to enhance observability of situation awareness in time scale. Thus, the situation awareness technology of distribution network based on multi-source information fusion is provided, which is constituted of the multi-source information fusion, source-load forecasting, fast simulation analysis, risk assessment and warning and visualization modules. Finally, the operation cockpit visualization technology enables operators to efficiently capture accurate distribution network security situation trend. The ADN Situation Awareness System Demonstration Project is currently being carried out by State Grid Jiangsu Power Company, the actual operation indicates that it can effectively enhance the operation situation awareness and risk early-warning capability.

This paper presents a real-time implementation of multi-agent based game theory reverse auction model for microgrid market operation featuring conventional and renewable distributed energy resources (DER). Studies were conducted for a grid connected microgrid consisting of a synchronous generator, two inverter-based generation units and a combined load. The Multi-agent based platform was applied to monitoring, controlling and per-forming the reverse auction process of the DER. A competitive game-theory reverse auction model was investigated to schedule the DER unit commitment with hour-ahead market approach for the twenty-four hours of the day. The proposed methodology was realistically implemented and operated at Florida International University, Smart Grid Test system. The investigation shows that the proposed algorithm and the industrial based hardware structure can be implemented in existing electric utility grid as new assets of the system are added.

This paper describes how inverters can stabilize the grid frequency in an interconnected system. The grid frequency is currently mainly controlled by synchronous generators. With the further increase of distributed generation, inverters need to provide more grid support services. In particular, instantaneous frequency control is still exclusively provided by generators, though grid-forming inverters are already state of the art for off-grid applications and can be adapted to substitute synchronous generators. In this paper, the dynamic behavior of synchronous generators is analyzed and a control algorithm for inverters is presented which emulates the principle behavior of synchronous machines and which is able to support inertia to the grid and reduces frequency gradients. Several tests based on simulations and laboratory measurements demonstrate that inverters with adequate control algorithms are able to maintain or even improve the dynamic frequency stability.

Smart Grid Technology, a reasonable move in modern Power System, assures coveted resiliency, consistency, and the utmost efficiency of the entire Grid System utilizing renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, geothermal, and ocean energy by integrating on-site generation strategies. Apart from its environmental aspect, the renewable energy based smart grid technology has a broad scope of research, application, and commerce. In this paper, an inclusive review is outlined on smart grid and its prospect in imminent future. Besides the conventional grid system, the architecture, function, pros, cons, and the environmental aspect of the smart grid technology are illustrated to describe this modern contrivance. After that, the growth and the market scenario of the renewable are shown for the different regions of the world. Finally, a prognosis of the smart grid technology is presented from the comprehensive study.
