This paper analyses the performance of various signal amplitude analysis algorithms. Five algorithms are reviewed: automatic threshold peak detection (ATPD), automatic chromatographic peak detection (ACPD), adaptive threshold method (ATM), peak of Shannon energy envelope (PSEE), and automatic multiscale peak detection (AMPD). The selected algorithms are potential method for nano biosensor application. These algorithms are investigated for periodic and non-periodic signal. Based on the experiment results, the ATPD gives the lowest detection error(33%). In terms of computational speed, the ATM method is fastest, with a speed at least two times that of any of the other algorithms.

The advances in power electronics and the awareness of the use of renewable energy has motivated the connection of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) into Power Distribution Networks. Additional challenges are related to the changes that the presence of DER cause on typical radial characteristics of distribution networks, which were not considered in the formulation of fault location methods. This paper presents a proposal for fault location for power distribution networks in presence of Inverter-Interfaced DER when these working in limiting current. The proposal uses a fault model of the inverter to consider its impact on the fault location. Thus, is assumed that the inverter always operates in limiting current mode when a fault event occurs. It allows estimate its current contribution to the fault point. A case study in the IEEE 34 Node Test Feeder is performed. This system is modeled on ATP/EMTP and modified with the insertion of an Inverter-Interfaced DER. The method is validated by consideration of two scenarios. Scenario 1 - DER penetration level effect and scenario 2 - Fault resistance on the proposed method effect. The results obtained presented a maximum error of 0.3%.

Power systems of the future are believed to be shaped by the introduction of smart grids and microgrids where distributed generation is dominant at the distribution level. DC distribution is also a potential microgrid solution. Distributed generation and loads interconnect to DC-common feeders via power electronics interfaces. This paper aims at reviewing how recent innovations in power electronics can open up the potentials for medium and low-voltage DC power (MV/LV DC) development in the future.

High performance diarisation is a necessity for a variety of applications, and the task has been studied extensively in the context of broadcast news and meeting processing. Upon introduction of the task in NIST led evaluations, diarisation error rate (DER) was introduced as the standard metric for evaluation, and it has been consistently used to compare systems ever since. DER is a frame based metric that does not penalise for producing many short segments. However, practical systems that require diarisation input are typically not able to cope well with such artefacts. In this paper we illustrate the need for an alternative metric focussing on segments, instead of duration or boundaries only. We propose a segment based F-measure, which specifically addresses issues such as reference errors, matching start and end boundaries, and speaker pairing. The performance of the metric is analysed in the context of state-of-the-art systems and compared with other existing metrics. It is shown to give a deeper insight into the segmentation quality over the standard metrics, and thus better value for to understand impact on follow on tasks such as ASR.

Increased integration of distributed energy resources (DER) depends on addressing a number of technical challenges, both on the planning side - the interconnection process - and likewise how the DER interacts with distribution operations. These two domains are obviously linked. This paper presents the results of the first phase of a project considering the testing and demonstration of DER and a real-time control platform for managing grid constraints under high clean energy deployment levels. The power hardware in the loop testing, conducted at NREL's ESIF smart power lab, demonstrated improved integration of a smart home and its associated DER using active network management (ANM). Results are presented and discussed for management of reverse reactive power constraints. The team also successfully demonstrated management of voltage rise and import constraints.

Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) are more prevalent in medium-voltage distribution systems. Steady-state voltage management for these systems has become a major obstacle to power utilities due to DERs' control mode typically applied, i.e., constant power factor control. Voltage rises are becoming a norm that poses hurdles to accepting many DER connections. This paper addresses this issue and provides existing mitigation strategies utilities are adopting. It also explains the imperative need to develop better mitigation measures.

Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) include both sources of real and reactive power, such as rooftop photovoltaics, micro turbines, integrated electric storage and electric vehicles and most critically the Information and Communication technology (ICT) that provides for information flows. The state of New York has embarked on an ambitious program Reforming the Energy Vision (REV) that is focused on facilitating the implementation of DER through the refocusing of the existing distribution utilities to become Distributed System Platforms (DSP). The paper provides a summary overview of the critical elements of the REV, an overview of the elements of the underlying Distributed Locational Marginal Prices (DLMPs) and a quantitative assessment of the impact of DER on the incumbent utilities based on a case study of increased penetration of DER in the Long Island New York distribution system.

In the recent years, the disadvantages of the inverter based distributed energy resource, such as less inertia and lower available kinetic energy as compared to synchronous generator (SG), have been addressed by researchers. As a result, the virtual synchronous generator (VSG) or virtual synchronous machine (VSM) is suggested in literature. VSG controller allows the inverter to mimic the characteristic of the synchronous generator by emulating the swing equation of SG. In case of VSG control, one can change the parameters of swing equation in real-time to improve the transient response of the system, which is not possible in an actual synchronous machine. Based on this concept, an optimized VSG control is discussed in this paper, in which the inertia constant and damping factor are altered between two values based on relative virtual angular velocity and its rate of change. The optimized values of virtual inertia constant and virtual damping factor are obtained, by formulating, aggregated fitness function of frequency deviation and voltage deviation. Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) technique is used to minimize the function. Lyapunov direct method is used for the transient stability analysis of the system.

Local control of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) in microgrids usually relies on droop algorithm in order to ensure stability to the system in islanded operation. Conventional and reverse droop control are applied respectively to Voltage Control Mode (VCM) inverters and to Current Control Mode inverters (CCM). In low-voltage microgrid, traditional P-ω and Q-V droop characteristic is subject to the power coupling and could lead to unstable operating conditions due to dependence of load on the voltage and on the frequency. Therefore P-V and Q-ω droop characteristic, named resistive droop, is used in simulations and in experimental tests to show its effectiveness for a stable and decoupled regulation of islanded LV microgrid.

A large scale Photovoltaic (PV) distributed energy resource (DER) connected to grid is studied in this paper. A single-stage power converter is considered in this study, which is capable of tracking maximum power point and controlling reactive power. The internal controller of the inverter has dynamic quadrature component to adjust the reactive power dispatch. The external voltage control tracks the maximum power point through dynamic reference value for the DC voltage. A comparison is conducted between variable and fixed DC reference voltages in terms of their active power yields for the proposed single stage converter system. The paper investigates the impact of different ambient disturbances such as varying weather conditions, solar radiation with severe disturbances. The active and reactive power flow and voltage of the system at three different distances of distribution line has been investigated and verified by Matlab/Simulink simulations.
