Probabilistic considerations of uncertainties in distribution grid planning is one of the keystones to avoid oversizing of grids and equipment due to unreal worst-case assumptions. However, the computational costs to integrate uncertainties in calculation processes reach from worth mentioning to unfeasible. In this paper, a new method is introduced, which consists of a simplification and a rank comparison process and yields high accuracy as well as low computational costs. Various DER control strategies and nonlinear network equipment can be integrated and time savings of up to a factor of 9000 can be reached.

The hybrid AC/DC microgrid is getting popular in different countries including Australia as it could enhance energy efficiency and system's reliability. This paper investigates the dynamic performance of a hybrid AC/DC microgrid during transition from grid-tied mode to isolated mode and vice versa. As the droop control method allows the system to operate under both grid-connected mode and islanded mode, it is adopted as the main inverter control strategy for observing the system's performance during mode switching. Different characteristics of distribution energy resources (DERs) make it complicated to share power between the DC subgrid and the AC subgrid during islanded mode. Therefore, this paper investigates the performance of a hybrid microgrid under different scenarios which contains various DER combinations. DER units such as PV modules, wind turbines, battery energy storage systems (BESSs), and micro-turbines are utilized for building systems with different structures. Different case studies are carried out in MATLAB/SIMULINK environment based on a real microgrid system which is built in Griffith University Nathan campus for demonstrations. Simulation results show that the microgrid system could perform well and ensure smooth transition with the proposed control strategy described in this paper. Through the comparisons of different scenarios, it can be seen that system which include BESS could show better performance during mode transition. When micro-turbine involves in power supply, fluctuations in AC voltage and power supply can be optimized.

As the number of distributed energy sources (DERs) increases in a microgrid (MG), the likelihood of frequency and voltage instabilities increases. In particular, the control of frequency and voltage becomes a challenge in an islanded mode due to the inherent low-inertia feature of DERs compared to a grid-tied mode where there is a grid support. This instability problem becomes worse for low or medium voltage low-inertia MGs, where the line impedance is dominantly resistive. The goal of this paper is to demonstrate the stability and power quality problems that can occur in islanded medium voltage MGs. PSCAD/EMTDC simulation results for an MG with a high share of low-inertia power generation units illustrate the importance of the frequency and voltage stability as power utilities adopting more DERs.

A hybrid microgrid planning model is proposed in this paper to determine the least-cost distributed energy resource (DER) size and generation mix, the type of each feeder in the microgrid distribution network (i.e., AC or DC), and the optimal location of each selected DER. The objective of the microgrid planning problem is to minimize the total planning cost, including the investment and operation costs of the DERs, the investment cost of converters, the cost of the energy exchange with the utility grid, and the cost of unserved energy. A static planning model is considered which provides a quick solution and viable insight on the microgrid planning decisions. Numerical simulations exhibit the effectiveness of the proposed model and further analyze the sensitivity of microgrid planning results on variety of factors such as the ratio of DC loads, load criticality, and converters' efficiency.

Multiagent Systems (MAS) are used extensively in Smart Grid research as a means of developing distributed control systems comprised of a network of communicating units. Many previous works have made implicit or explicit assumptions that lead to simplified modeling and simulation of the underlying communication systems. While these assumptions are valid under some cases, they may not hold true when system size and complexity scale up exponentially, which can be anticipated given the rapid development of smart grid technologies. In this paper, we present a more comprehensive modeling and simulation approach that accounts for the MAS related protocols as described in the FIPA (Foundation for Intelligent Physical Agents) specification; together with a co-simulation platform for the investigation of multi-disciplinary interdependencies between MAS, communication, and electrical systems. To show the benefits of comprehensive modeling and simulation, we demonstrate how different network configurations affect system performance in a Fault Location, Isolation and Service Restoration (FLISR) scenario.

The paper presents a multi-layer hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) based testbed for development, evaluation and testing of microgrid operation. The testbed is a configurable setup which can match any microgrid structure. The presented microgrid consists of 15 distributed energy resources (DERs). It includes 4 distributed generators (DGs): a solar plant, diesel generator, 2 constant power sources, 10 distributed loads (DLs): a direct-on-line induction machines, constant power load, 7 passive loads, a three phase rectifier with an active filter and a battery storage system (BSS). Power system and power electronics parts were simulated by a real time simulator. Controllers for the PE converters were real, industrial controllers connected to the real-time simulator. Supervisory control and data acquisition system (SCADA) for the microgrid was designed and connected to the system. The system behavior was analyzed in a number of different scenarios.

The R peak detection algorithm is a necessary tool for monitoring and diagnosing the cardiovascular disease. This paper presents the R peak detection algorithm based on continuous wavelet transform (CWT) and Shannon energy. We evaluate the proposed algorithm with the ECG data record 108 from MIT-BIH arrhythmia database. The record 108 results in high detection error rate (DER) in many previous R peak detection algorithms because it consists of muscle noise, baseline shifts, and abnormal heart beats. Results show that the proposed algorithm gives very good DER (0.79%-0.85%) compared to those from previous publications (0.57%-4.71%). We demonstrated that the use of the CWT with a single scaling parameter is capable of removing noises. In addition, we found that Shannon energy cannot improve the DER value but it can highlight the R peak from the low QRS complex in ECG beat leading to the improvement in the robustness of the R peak detection algorithm.

The profusion of digital resources, mainly educational ones, inside the Moroccan universities makes it difficult to satisfy students' information needs. Hence, this raises the issue of personalized search and recommendation of Digital Educational Resources (DER) within a repository. In this paper, we propose enriching the repository model ORI-OAI by the following functionalities: the filtering of results based on students' interests, the recommendation of digital educational resources based on their competences and adding of the Arabic language.

In the field of grid-connected distributed energy resources (DER), telecommunication network plays an important role to carry various information and control messages. With the advantages of high bandwidth and reliability, the EPON (Ether Passive Optical Network) has become one of important communication system to support distributed energy resources. Moreover, IEC61850 protocol has been introduced into the communication field of distributed energy resources. However, the communication system has not been included in the IEC61850 architecture as IED (Intelligent Electronic Device) information model. Aimed to solve this probleme, the information modeling and evaluation method of Communication System for DER is proposed in this paper. The communication architecture of IEC61850 and the IED modeling are introduced. Then, information modeling of EPON is conducted, including logic node, port management, data requirement. Furthermore, the working state of EPON is evaluated comprehensively with the fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method.

Power systems are evolving to accommodate more renewable sources of energy, and sophisticated control systems. A characteristic of the evolution is the integration of a communication network overlay that controls the bilateral flow of energy and information. We develop an off-line smart grid co-simulator test-bed from off-the-shelf communication, power and control simulators. The test-bed is targeted as a tool to help researchers verify various communication enabled control schemes designed for distribution system. The benefits of the test-bed are illustrated on a low voltage microgrid system. A test case of an energy management system is evaluated using the off-line co-simulation test-bed.
