Distributed Resources in the Smart Grid, such as Distributed Generation (DG) and Responsive Loads (RL) are capable of providing a wide range of ancilliary services, if properly coordinated. However, because of their large numbers and distributed nature, using a fully centralized communication structure to achieve coordination can be prohibitive, due to scale and cost. Decentralized approaches based on multi-agent systems theory have been proposed and are focused on linear consensus algorithms that asymptotically converge to a cooperative solution. In this paper, an alternative approach, which converges in a finite number of steps is formulated. The protocol is based on linear iterative updates and known observability results from graph structured linear systems. Here, the protocol is also modified to address a generalized cooperation problem in the context of DG/RL coordination. Furthermore, the protocol is modified to reduce the number of operations per step, ensuring that it is applicable to a large scale grid, which is usually the case in practice. The applicability of the approach is verified through simulations, for the case of grid voltage support through Distributed Generation.

In nowadays Smart Grids, economic optimizations performed by Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) may interfere with stable grid operation required by Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Since Smart Grids and VPPs are important building blocks of future energy systems, bridging the gap between economic optimization performed by VPPs and stable grid operation required by DSOs is an important task. In this paper, we present a fundamental system architecture and a concept enabling VPPs and DSOs to negotiate their positions to satisfy the needs and requirements of both sides. Thus, instead of being a potential interference factor, economically sensible operation of distributed energy resources (DERs) organized in VPPs and stable grid operation as required by DSOs are integrated in a common solution.

In this paper we propose and evaluate a speaker attribution system using a complete-linkage clustering method. Speaker attribution refers to the annotation of a collection of spoken audio based on speaker identities. This can be achieved using diarization and speaker linking. The main challenge associated with attribution is achieving computational efficiency when dealing with large audio archives. Traditional agglomerative clustering methods with model merging and retraining are not feasible for this purpose. This has motivated the use of linkage clustering methods without retraining. We first propose a diarization system using complete-linkage clustering and show that it outperforms traditional agglomerative and single-linkage clustering based diarization systems with a relative improvement of 40% and 68%, respectively. We then propose a complete-linkage speaker linking system to achieve attribution and demonstrate a 26% relative improvement in attribution error rate (AER) over the single-linkage speaker linking approach.

Most faults in the overhead distribution networks are temporary in nature. The protection system is therefore designed to open the line in an attempt to clear the fault and then automatically reclose to reconnect the circuit once the fault has cleared. Typical open interval dead-band in the medium voltage distribution grids is in the range of 150-300 ms for fast reclosing shots. Distributed energy resources (DER) are incompatible with the present utility reclosing practices since the DER unit may prevent the arc extinction by continuing to feed the fault. This way, a temporary fault can turn into a permanent one. Also, during the circuit breaker open time of the reclosing sequence, the generators in the network usually tend to drift away from synchronism with respect to the grid. A reconnection made without synchronization may cause serious damage to the DER units, potentially leading to overcurrent and/or overvoltage conditions in the grid. This paper proposes an algorithm for adapting the auto-reclosing sequence based on the connectivity status of the DER units in the distribution grid. The solution has been modeled based on IEC 61850 standard for compliance with modern utility practices.

In this paper, the problem of missing diacritic marks in most of Arabic written resources is investigated. Our aim is to implement a scalable and extensible platform to automatically restore missing diacritic marks for Modern Standard Arabic text. Different rule-based and statistical techniques are proposed. These include: morphological analyzer-based, maximum likelihood estimate, and statistical n-gram models. Diacritization accuracy of each technique was evaluated based on Diacritic Error Rate (DER) and Word Error Rate (WER). The proposed platform includes helper tools for text preprocessing and encoding conversion. It yielded a WER of 7.1% and DER of 3.9%. When the case ending was ignored, the platform yielded a WER and DER of 5.1% and 2.7%, respectively.

The electric power system is an enabling infrastructure that supports the operation of other critical infrastructures and thus the economic well being of the nation. It is therefore very important to design a smart grid for resiliency and autonomous re-configurability in the electric power grid. For the operation of any power system, its control architecture consisting of hardware and software protocols is very essential for exchanging system status and control signals. This is accomplished by Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems. Current trends to control and monitor the operation of electric power systems are however moving towards the use of an automated agent technology using a multi-agent system which replaces SCADA system. The objective of this paper is to design and model a multiagent system which consists of Distributed Energy Resource (DER) agent, Data Base agent, Control agent and User agent. DER agent is modeled using MATLAB/SIMULINK. The simulation results presented in this paper show the seamless transition from grid connected to an island mode when upstream outages are detected. This denotes the capability of a multi-agent system as a technology for managing the microgrid operation.

Over the last decade, distributed energy resources (DER) technology has undergone a fast development. Increased penetration of DER units and wide spread use of renewable energy sources challenge the entire architecture of traditional power system. Microgrid, characterizing higher flexibility and reliability, becomes an attractive candidate for the configuration of future electrical power system. This paper gives a brief review of grid interactive ac microgrid configurations. Control methods for power electronics interfaced DER units in grid interactive ac microgrids are discussed. In addition, microgrid controls and power management strategies are presented. Future trends of microgrid are discussed pointing out how this concept can be a key to achieve a more intelligent and flexible AC grid.

Distributed energy resources (DER) are quickly making their way to industry primarily as backup generation. They are effective at starting and then producing full-load power within a few seconds. DER can alleviate the burden on the utility grid by providing ancillary services, which also helps in justifying the installation cost for the DER owner. This paper describes ten types of these ancillary services, which DG can provide to the utility grid. This paper explains the design of a communication system, using an Arduino microcontroller and GSM Module and its functions / associated components to be implemented in a microgrid. The microgrid control and coordination infrastructure has been realized as a hierarchical multi-agent system (MAS) comprising of the DG agents, the Mu agent and the D agent. The Communication (Mu) Agent acts as a link between the lower-level microgrid agents (distributed energy resources (DERs), the load, the storage and the utility grid) which provide the required digital parameter inputs, and the Control Agent comprising of the Cloud. Data storage, analytics and control commands are generated based on the rule engine updates given by the Utility Service Provider (USP) to the Cloud. The microgrid side input data are converted into appropriate GPRS signals within the Arduino. The specific functions that enable this conversion are elucidated as pseudocode. Further, the cloud control commands are sent back to the various microgrid-side agents via the Mu agent as GPRS signals. The communication strategy has been explained in detail and has been implemented using Arduino keeping in mind system costs, ease of operability and maintenance.
