In many different fields, researchers are often confronted by problems arising from complex systems. Simple heuristics or even enumeration works quite well on small and easy problems;however, to efficiently solve large and difficult problems, proper decomposition is the key. In this paper, investigating and analyzing interactions between components of complex systems shed some light on problem decomposition. By recognizing three bare-bones interactions-modularity, hierarchy, and overlap, facetwise models are developed to dissect and inspect problem decomposition in the context of genetic algorithms. The proposed genetic algorithm design utilizes a matrix representation of an interaction graph to analyze and explicitly decompose the problem. The results from this paper should benefit research both technically and scientifically. Technically, this paper develops an automated dependency structure matrix clustering technique and utilizes it to design a model-building genetic algorithm that learns and delivers the problem structure. Scientifically, the explicit interaction model describes the problem structure very well and helps researchers gain important insights through the explicitness of the procedure. © 2009 by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

dependency structure matrix (DSM) concepts have been applied effectively to represent and manage complex design processes. However, the author's attempts to implement the concepts on large construction projects faced limitations. The key limitation was that the identification of elements for activity DSM at the appropriate level of abstraction required significant levels of expertise. As drawings are well-defined entities that are directly identifiable by the design team, this paper proposes that drawing DSM (DDSM) be used to manage the design process. Further, as drawing production is a complex task containing many subactivities, a structured method is required to identify the dependencies between the drawings. Based on a systems approach, a three-stage structured methodology to decompose the project and identify the drawing interfaces is developed. The conceptual details of this methodology are explained and the steps are illustrated using a generic example. The paper also presents the application of the methodology to an airport project and discusses the results obtained as well as the necessary future improvements.

Sequential dependency structure matrix based framework for leveling of a tower crane lifting plan

Recent construction projects involving the building of extremely tall and large structures have increased the demand for various major equipment, including tower cranes (TCs). However, most lifting plans for TCs at construction sites are performed based on the experience and intuition of the site manager as opposed to a systematic process of rational work. This study presents a framework for scheduling TCs using sequential characteristics of a dependency structure matrix (DSM) to efficiently improve the lifting plan of TCs. In this research, a real world construction case study involving a TC in charge of three buildings was examined. The results of the case study indicated that the scheduling of TC using sequential DSM was useful in leveling the TC lifting plan in terms of ease of use, especially in the typical floor cycle lifting planning. Therefore, the TC lifting plan based on sequential DSM presents a more precise and systematic TC lifting plan.

As changes constitute the main cause of schedule delay, cost overrun and other distributions, change management is an important aspect in construction project management. Many change management systems has been developed to minimize the impacts of change or to facilitate change management. However, changes should be predicted as early as possible, and then enable project management teams to take pre-management measures to minimize the changes negative impacts accordingly. In this paper, a change prediction system using activity-based dependency structure matrix (DSM) was developed to facilitate managing change, which can identify the possible changes in construction project. The outputs of the system for an application have represented the main function of the system. Methods about how to acquire date required for the proposed system are also presented. The proposed system can be helpful for project managers to manage change more efficiently.

Effective collaboration and knowledge management are the major contributors of success in the construction industry. Although a huge amount of interdisciplinary knowledge is exchanged in building design processes, there is a lack of tools for representing information flows. Therefore, this paper focuses on the collaboration between architects and structural engineers and introduces an innovative matrix-based tool named "The Layered dependency structure matrix" for modeling and managing the discipline-specific and collaborative design activities. The proposed method is compared with the conventional techniques used in the industry and its application is demonstrated in a beam design example.

This work investigates the application of dependency structure matrix (DSM) to problems with fast dynamics, such as airspace sectorization. The aim of this paper is to use a powerful mathematical tool to distinguish relevant agents in a busy airspace with a logical and meaningful distribution of the workload among air traffic controllers. This approach will help prevent controllers from getting exhausted in busy airspaces and increase the overall capacity of the airspace. It could also serve as a logical interface to simulate the chance of human error in a controlled aerodrome. Different case-studies by the authors reveal that adding real-time capabilities to the existing platform can be very effective with the re-architecting of neighboring sectors so that the domino effects of delays imposed on neighbors is decreased.

With the growth of demand for electrical energy, it is a common practice in the power industry to shorten the maintenance duration and often to postpone maintenance tasks. Maintenance or overhaul of generating units is one of the crucial factors in delivering reliable electrical energy. A large part of the overhaul work is to examine the condition of the mechanical and the electrical elements. This examination can highlight faults in some components requiring management of new activities. This paper presents a method using a dependency structure matrix for managing schedules within uncertain conditions of information dependency. The matrix is optimized using an evolutionary algorithm for scheduling overhaul and planned outages at hydro power plants. The dependency between tasks or the information flow between activities is formulated in a structural matrix with the objective to minimize the total completion time. The method is used to examine the staff scheduling of a twelve years overhaul at one of Landsvirkjun's hydro power units. Staff scheduling or rostering is a large scale constrained optimization problem. Using the dependency structure matrix (DSM) and evolutionary methods (GA) to optimize the order of activities shows improvements in the overhaul operational plan.

Managing project costs effectively, which comprises numerous aspects, is a highly complicated process for project managers that needs dependable cash knowledge in the entire life cycle of the project. Project managers' proficiency and anticipating dependable cash flows lead to substantial improvements in project costs management. Moreover, healthy cash flow prognostication for the whole construction project gives project managers a real insight into the identification of problems, and its deficiency results in the failure of firms even with big profits to maintain themselves as well. Therefore, predicting reliable cash flow and monitoring the progress of projects in terms of cash are essential to be considered. Furthermore, due to the existence of uncertainties in projects, it is necessary to find it as a significant part of different approaches. Building upon these, an innovative approach is presented in this paper to prognosticate project cash flow based on both type-2 fuzzy extension of dependency structure matrix for project scheduling with overlapping activities and extended alternative queuing method under type-2 fuzzy environment to adopt the best scenario. Moreover, type-2 fuzzy numbers are applied to address the uncertainty of activities. Subsequently, a real case study of a gas field development project is employed to represent the efficiency of proposed approach. Ultimately, a comparative study is conducted to validate the results, and superiorities of the proposed approach are addressed from different aspects. The results illustrate that the presented approach is capable of handling real project problems and providing project managers with a suitable tool to comprehend the cash conditions of the projects.

Assessment of global sensitivity analysis methods for project scheduling

Product development requires scheduling that considers the interdependence between activities. The definition of the interdependencies and duration of activities, communication times and the level of overlap between activities is needed for project scheduling. However, these parameters have epistemic uncertainties that can affect project scheduling. In this work, different global sensitivity analysis techniques were applied to identify the parameters that had the greatest effect on project scheduling. It was concluded that standardized regression coefficients as well as the Morris and Sobol'-Jansen methods were the most appropriate. It was also found that global sensitivity analysis can help to focus resources based on the definitions and control the uncertainty of key activities. Furthermore, it was concluded that control of the uncertainty of key activities reduces the uncertainty and duration of projects. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
