This paper presents an efficient depth map coding method based on a newly defined rendering view distortion function. As compared to the conventional depth map coding in which distortion is measured by only investigating the coding error in depth map, the proposed scheme focuses on virtually synthesized view quality by involving co-located color information. In detail, the proposed distortion function estimates rendered view quality, where area-based scheme is provided in order to mimic the warping/ view-rendering process accurately. Moreover, the coding performance of the proposed distortion metric is even improved by involving the additional SKIP mode derived by co-located color coding information. The simulation results show the proposed scheme could achieve approximately 30% bit-rate saving for depth data, and about 10% bit-rate saving for overall multi-view data.

Inter Mode Selection for depth Map coding in 3D Video

3D video (3DV) data usually includes both conventional 2D videos and corresponding depth maps. In 3DV coding, color videos and depth maps need to be jointly coded. Usually, the system of 3DV coding uses the two-channel coding method which encodes color videos and depth maps based on two parallel codec implementations. The complexity and hardware requirements are nearly two times higher than coding 2D color videos. While low-complexity color video coding has been broadly studied, depth map coding has received much less attention. The depth map represents the distance from cameras to objects, which has characteristics of both data on Z-axis in world coordinate and the video signal. Thus, there is a high correlation among motion information (the prediction mode, reference frame and motion vector) from color videos and depth maps. Based on this observation, we propose one method to reduce depth coding complexity. An experimental analysis is performed to study the prediction mode correlation in coding information from color videos and depth maps. Based on the correlation, we propose an efficient mode decision algorithm. With almost the same RD performance, the proposed algorithm can reduce about 70% computational complexity of depth coding, which is beneficial for real-time realization through a hardware or software implementation for the 3DV applications(1).

The 3D extension of High Efficiency Video coding (HEVC) has been developed as a standard to code multiview data with depth information. In addition to the existing coding tools in HEVC, in the 3D extension, depth pictures can be coded with supplemental techniques typically designed to utilize the special characteristic of depth pictures. To better utilize the correlation between texture and depth pictures, in this paper, we present an enhanced motion prediction method for depth coding using the motion from the associated texture picture. Such a method inherits the motion information for sub-blocks of depth prediction units. The proposed method provides in average 3.2% bit rate reduction for a 3D video system, wherein the quality is evaluated by the synthesized views.

In this paper, we present a new depth map coding scheme to improve coding efficiency. For this purpose, we developed an adaptive bilateral filter that restores the coded depth maps in accordance with the estimated noise variance. More specifically, each pixel is classified in such a way that the distortion cost is minimized and is restored depending on local noise level. The restored picture is used for the motion-compensated prediction of future pictures. This can improve coding efficiency. In particular, we propose classifying each pixel based on the optimal threshold and selecting the optimal fall-off parameter, which makes the bilateral filter more powerful. Finally, video coding that performs the new approach was implemented and this resulted in 11.4% (rate-distortion sense) and 12.0% (rate-quality sense) BD-bitrate reduction on average in FRExt Profile when compared with H.264/MVC.

This paper presents an efficient depth map coding method based on color information in multi-view plus depth (MVD) system. As compared to the conventional depth map coding in which depth video is separately coded, the proposed scheme involves color information for depth map coding. In details, the proposed algorithm subsamples input depth data along temporal direction to reduce the bit-rate, and non-encoded depth frames are recovered at the decoder side guided by the motion information extracted from the decoded color video. The simulation results shows the high coding efficiency of the proposed scheme, and it also shows that recovered depth frame are not much different from the reconstructed one. Furthermore, it can even provide temporally consistent depth map which results in better subjective quality for view-interpolation.

depth coding in 3D video is unique in that its quality is measured by the view synthesis distortion (VSD) rather than its own depth distortion, which further complicates the coding optimization as VSD is related to both the depth and texture quality. We propose a parameter-free VSD model to directly estimate the impact of depth errors on VSD on the small block basis, given its depth distortion. The proposed model is incorporated into rate-distortion optimization of depth coding, by adapting the Lagrange multiplier and optimizing the selection of quantization parameters. Simulation results show that our proposed scheme improves the BDPSNR and BDBR by 0.6dB PSNR and 20% bits saving on average compared with H.264 coding standard in depth coding, while keeping the implementation easy.

This work proposes a new intra prediction coding scheme for depth map images used in view interpolation. The main goal is to design a prediction scheme which can reduce the prediction error energy in blocks with arbitrary edge shapes. This will reduce the rate needed to encode such blocks while also eliminating some of the annoying artifacts caused by quantization. Since depth maps typically consist of smooth regions separated by edges, we find it sufficient to design prediction schemes which can make effective use of edge information. Working from the intra prediction framework in H.264, we provide a graph representation of pixels in a block and pixels from previously coded blocks and construct an edge-aware prediction scheme based on this. We also employ existing rate-distortion (RD) optimization methods to further improve the coding performance. Our proposed methods reduce the bit rate for depth maps by up to 29% for a fixed interpolated PSNR for some sequences.

depth video coding is one of the key techniques to realize the three-dimensional (3D) video system. The depth video is spatially high correlated compared to its corresponding color video in general. In this paper, we propose a high priority intra coding method for depth video coding to efficiently reduce the spatial redundancy. The proposed intra mode is designed based on the intra 16x16 mode. It exploits the derived prediction direction from the adjacent neighboring pixels and does not encode any residual data. The proposed intra mode is allowed I slice as well as P and B slices. It is newly defined for I slice as skip mode and replaced with the skip or direct modes for P and B slices. By the experiments on JMVC 8.2, we confirm that the proposed high priority intra mode reduces about 14.63% bit rate compared to JMVC 8.2 at the same rendering quality.

Fast DMM Decision Based on Variance Calculation for depth Intra coding in 3D-HEVC

3D-HEVC is the latest coding standard for 3D video with the video format of multi-view texture plus depth map (MVD). The depth map is capable of assisting the prediction, synthesizing virtual views, or rendering the stereo display. depth modelling mode is adopted in 3D-HEVC to improve the efficiency of depth intra coding but increases the coding time. This paper proposes a fast algorithm to accelerate the depth intra coding by making use of the variances of the boundary pixels to decide whether to execute DMM or not. The experimental results show that the proposed method can reduce the total coding time from 10.1% to 18.6% with different parameter settings and maintain good video quality.
