In this paper, we propose a depth map down-sampling and coding scheme that minimizes the view synthesis distortion. Moreover, a solution for the optimal depth map down-sampling problem that minimizes the depth-caused distortion in the virtual view by exploiting the depth map and the associated texture information along with the up-sampling method to be used in the decoder side is derived. Furthermore, to enhance compression performance, the synthesized view distortion, which is evaluated by emulating the interpolation and the virtual view synthesis process, is used in the optimization objective function for coding mode selection in the video encoder. Experimental results show that both the proposed depth map down-sampling and encoding methods lead to good performance, and the average bit rate reduction is 2.62% compared with 3D-AVC.

In this paper, a low-complexity algorithm is proposed to reduce the complexity of depth map compression in the high-efficiency video coding (HEVC)-based 3D video coding (3D-HEVC). Since the depth map and the corresponding texture video represent the same scene in a 3D video, there is a high correlation among the coding information from depth map and texture video. An experimental analysis is performed to study depth map and texture video correlation in the coding information such as the motion vector and prediction mode. Based on the correlation, we propose three efficient low-complexity approaches, including early termination mode decision, adaptive search range motion estimation (ME), and fast disparity estimation (DE). Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can reduce about 66% computational complexity with negligible rate-distortion (RD) performance loss in comparison with the original 3D-HEVC encoder.

An efficient down/upsampling method to compress a depth map efficiently within the high-efficiency video coding (HEVC) framework is presented. A different edge-preserving depth upsampling method is proposed by using both the texture and depth information. We take into account the edge similarity between depth maps and their corresponding texture images as well as the structural similarity among depth maps to build a weight model. Based on the weight model, the optimal minimum mean square error upsampling coefficients are estimated from the local covariance coefficients of the downsampled depth map. The upsampling filter is combined with HEVC to increase coding efficiency. The objective results demonstrate that we achieve a maximum bit rate saving of 32.2% compared to full resolution method and 27.6% compared to a competing depth down/upsampling method on depth bit rate. The subjective evaluation showed that our proposed method achieves better quality in synthesized views than existing methods do. (c) The Authors. Motion vectors of depth-maps in multiview and free-viewpoint videos exhibit strong spatial as well as inter-component clustering tendency. This paper presents a novel coding technique that first compresses the multidimensional bitmaps of macroblock mode and then encodes only the nonzero components of motion vectors. The bitmaps are partitioned into disjoint cuboids using binary tree based decomposition so that the 0's and 1's are either highly polarized or further subpartitioning is unlikely to achieve any compression. Each cuboid is entropy-coded as a unit using binary arithmetic coding. This technique is capable of exploiting the spatial and inter-component correlations efficiently without the restriction of scanning the bitmap in any specific linear order as needed by run-length coding. As encoding of non-zero component values no longer requires denoting the zero value, further compression efficiency is achieved. Experimental results on standard multiview test video sequences have comprehensively demonstrated the superiority of the proposed technique, achieving overall coding gain against the state-of-the-art in the range [22%, 54%] and on average 38%.

The paper deals with nonlinear transformations of depth-sample values and their applications to multiview-plus-depth video coding. It is proposed to apply such a transformation prior to depth coding. For this transformation, the experiments demonstrate improved quality of the virtual views that are synthesized with use of the decoded depth. Such experiments were made for two versions of the prospective extensions of the Advanced Video coding (MPEG-4 part 10, ITU-T Rec. H.264). standard. The experimental results are given for the scenario where multiview video is encoded independently from depth and also for the scenario where multiview video is coded jointly with depth.

This paper presents a new approach for the depth coding part of a 3D video coding extension based on the Multiview Video plus depth (MVD) representation. Our approach targets a higher coding efficiency for the depth component and is motivated by the fact that depth signals have specific characteristics that differ from video. For this purpose we apply the method of wedgelet segmentation with residual adaptation for depth blocks by implementing a new set of coding and prediction modes and by optimizing the algorithms for efficient processing and signaling. The results show that a bit rate reduction of up to 6% is achieved for the depth component, using a 3D video codec based on the high-efficiency video coding (HEVC) technology. Apart from the depth coding gains, wedgelets lead to a considerably better rendered view quality.

It is well-known that large depth-coding errors typically occurring around depth edge areas lead to distorted object boundaries in the synthesized texture images. This paper proposes a multi-layered coding approach for depth images as a complement to the popular edge-aware approaches such as those based on platelets. It is shown that guaranteeing a near-lossless bound on the depth values around the edges by adding extra enhancement layers is an effective way to improve the visual quality of the synthesized images.

Inaccuracy depth estimation may influence on depth coding and virtual view rendering in the free-viewpoint television (FTV) system, an improved depth map estimation is proposed to solve the problem for coding and view synthesis. Firstly, check the consistency of initial depth, and the influence of initial miss-matches is minimized by introduction of an additional adaptive matching error selection that penalizes the unreliable matches. Then according to certain criteria, the multi-reference depth maps are merged into one disparity map to improve the quality of disparity map. Finally, a multilateral filtering is used to preserve details in the depth map and simultaneously smooth the depths in occluded areas at object boundary, less texture and discontinuity regions. Experimental results show a significant improvement of the initial input depth maps and coding efficiency, as well as a reduction of view synthesis artifacts.

Advanced multiview video systems are able to generate intermediate viewpoints of a 3D scene. In addition to the texture content, corresponding depth is associated with each viewpoint. To improve the coding efficiency of such content, view synthesis prediction can be used to further reduce inter-view redundancy in addition to traditional disparity compensated prediction. However, the predictor generated from the view synthesis process is affected by several factors, including signal properties of the texture, the accuracy of the depth and complexity of the scene, as well as coding errors in both the texture and depth. This paper presents an analysis of view synthesis prediction performance considering these factors. Based on this analysis, an adaptive depth quantization scheme is proposed to improve the depth coding, leading to better view synthesis prediction and overall coding efficiency gains. The proposed scheme is able to achieve an average bit rate savings of 0.9% on the coded and synthesized video with a maximum gain of up to 11.7% on the dependent views in the context of an HEVC-based codec.

Image inpainting, has an evolving approach for image quality enhancement and image visualization. In the process of image inpainting, pixels of similar area variants are considered in a tracing manner to achieve the objectives of unwanted image coefficient which are introduced due to detritions in image handing. To overcome this issue, images are processed in spatial domain, where, images are traced using 8-neighbor region growing method to achieve the objective of image enhancement However, in such approach, the pixel variations are observed in one variation plane. The variation with respect to successive pixel variants is not observed. To develop a new coding in considering with multiple domains, in this paper a new inpainting approach based on image depth coding is suggested.
