Robotic end-effectors in automated production lines are specially designed and built for a unique task and for a particular part. An end-effector capable of grasping different parts with different geometries will expand its benefit and reduce costs. This work focuses on the grasp of sheet metal parts for the automotive industry. In order to maximize the use of a single end-effector, this paper proposes a search algorithm for a simple common grasp configuration. Such configuration imply for an end-effector design capable of grasping a set of sheet metal parts. The algorithm maps possible grasps which are candidate to be common. We define a novel quality measure estimating the distribution of the contacts across the sheet metal part. Candidate grasps which have a sufficient quality are mapped into high-dimensional feature vectors. These feature vectors parameterize the geometry of the polyhedron formed by the contacts locations and the direction of the surface normals relative to the polyhedron. Thereby, they describe the design of the end-effector compatible to the grasp. A database is generated for all possible grasps for each part in the feature vector space. A similarity join based on nearest-neighbor search and classification algorithm are used for intersecting all possible feature vectors over all sheet metal parts and finding common ones. Simulations of a 3-finger grasp on four meshed sheet metal parts resulted in a common grasp. Results of the simulations validate the feasibility of the proposed algorithm.

This paper introduces a new design algorithm to optimize the building height for a set of parameters, including a fixed roof surface area with aspect ratio (1.0, 1.5, 2.0), orientation (ast, South, and West), and integrated Photovoltaics (PV) technology (Crystalline Silicon, Thin Film), efficiency (10%, 15%, 19%), and inclination angle (90 degrees, 70 degrees). Four different scenarios were examined in accordance with the contextual boundary conditions. For each case, the algorithm yielded the optimum number of floors as an output so that the building maintains its net-zero energy rating. The preliminary results indicated that utilizing a PV system with premium 19% efficiency yielded the maximum building height as compared to a system with 15% and 10% efficiency by a factor of 2.3 and 5.7 respectively, especially for low energy consumption levels. The performance with a vertical inclination angle of 70 degrees tilt was consistently superior to that from an angle of 90 degrees (a 43% improvement with 15% efficiency). For an aspect ratio of 2.0, the South facades contribution is 2 to 2.8 times more than that from the East/West facades. Overall, the site shading factor induces a performance degradation in the range of 11.1% to 18.7%.

Accurately calculating winding losses has always been a significant challenge in the design of large-capacity medium-frequency transformers. This paper presents an accurate design algorithm for calculating the winding losses of a large-capacity medium-frequency distribution transformer. First, the peculiarities of winding losses in medium-frequency distribution transformers are analyzed. Various commonly used winding conductor types for medium-frequency transformers are introduced. The mechanisms of and differences between AC and DC winding losses in medium-frequency transformers are explained, and an effective analytical method for calculating the AC-to-DC resistance ratio is provided. Finally, the analytical calculation results of different types of winding losses are compared with those obtained through finite element simulations and experimental methods applied to a real transformer prototype. The discrepancies between the analytical results and those obtained using the other two methods were found to be within acceptable error margins, thereby validating the accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Optimization of Ferrites Structure by Using a New Core-Less design algorithm for Electric Vehicle Wireless Power Transfer

In order to improve the customers' continuous usage of electrical vehicles (EVs) and reduce the weight of the energy storage devices, wireless charging technology has been widely studied, updated, and commercialized in recent decades, regarding to its distinct superiority of great convenience and low risk. A higher coupling coefficient is the key factor that impacts the transmission efficiency, thus in most medium-power (hundreds of watts) to high-power (several kilowatts) wireless charging systems, ferrites are used to guide the magnetic flux and intensify the magnetic density. However, the weight of the ferrite itself puts an extra burden on the system, and the core loss during operation also reduces the total efficiency and output power. This paper proposes an optimized design algorithm based on a core-less method for the magnetic core, where the core loss and the coupling coefficient are consequently balanced, and the overall weight and efficiency of the system can be optimized. The iteration procedure is applied on the basis of removed ferrite length and thickness in the algorithm. In the simulation, a square coupler with a total volume of 300 mm x 150 mm, a circular coupler of 150 mm x 150 mm and a Double-D (DD) coupler of 300 mm x 150 mm are used to verify the advantages of the proposed method. The optimized ferrite structures are specific for each coupler shape, and the improvement is proved to be universal in current scale by means of 3-D finite element analysis.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) plays a critical role in medicine today. Over the last few years, there has been an interest in techniques that use multiple coils on one side of the imaging system such as parallel excitation or parallel imaging to improve performance in high-field MRI. In this paper, we explore the use of multiple coils at both the transmit and receive sides for enhanced imaging. We term this a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) MRI system. We use tools from the well-developed MIMO communication models and propose a novel radio-frequency (RF) pulse design method for multiple coils. We show that our MIMO MRI techniques can provide an improved signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in the reconstructed image.

We propose a 2-stage ILP-based design algorithm for hybrid-HOXCs based optical networks. The hybrid-HOXC consists of an optical waveband cross-connect and an electrical cross-connect which grooms only wavelength paths. Its effectiveness is evaluated through numerical experiments. Impact of electrical/optical port cost ratio on the total network cost is also investigated.

In this paper, both analytical method and numerical method are used to suggest the rotor design process of the single-phase LSPM motor. The cage-bar is designed to generate the maximum starting torque by analytical method. The torque generated from the synchronous speed is divided into reluctance torque and magnetic torque to design barriers and permanent-magnets. In this process, optimal design method and current phase angle estimation method is suggested. In final design process, tapering of the stator teeth is conducted for reducing cogging torque.

The paper suggests a focused examination of the processes of drafting-based design and parametric design in urbanism. It discusses how spatial design's settled cognition would differ by using algorithmic systems through the altered relationships between the basic operations in design.
