A class of sampling designs for a continuous-time Gaussian hypothesis testing problem is discussed. This problem arises frequently in systems where it is necessary to sample the continuous time signal to produce discrete time data for computer processing. A class of periodic nonuniform sampling designs which optimizes performance under an asymptotic probability of error criterion is investigated. A design algorithm for the optimal sampler is presented.

An algorithm for designing a cooling system for photovoltaic panels

Solar energy is an abundant source of energy for generating electricity. One of the main challenges in using solar energy is that solar photovoltaic (PV) panels are typically used in regions where solar radiation is high;consequently, the temperature of the panels will increase, and the efficiency of the panels will decrease. Adding cooling tubes to the PV panel is a possible approach to cool it down. To design such cooling systems, CFD simulations may be used;however, this approach tends to be time-consuming. In this paper, we report a new algorithm for designing straight cooling tubes. The algorithm can be used to determine important design parameters such as tube center-to-center length, diameter of the tube, and the minimum tube length needed to achieve a desired outlet temperature. The accuracy of the algorithm was tested using real-world data (including various ambient temperatures and solar radiations) and the maximum temperature difference between desired outlet temperature and CFD simulation for the designed cooling system was found to be 1.7 degrees K.

Graph Stream algorithms: A Survey

Over the last decade, there has been considerable interest in designing algorithms for processing massive graphs in the data stream model. The original motivation was two-fold: a) in many applications, the dynamic graphs that arise are too large to be stored in the main memory of a single machine and b) considering graph problems yields new insights into the complexity of stream computation. However, the techniques developed in this area are now finding applications in other areas including data structures for dynamic graphs, approximation algorithms, and distributed and parallel computation. We survey the state-of-the-art results;identify general techniques;and highlight some simple algorithms that illustrate basic ideas.

SLIDING-MODE CONTROL OF AN INDUCTION-MOTOR WITHOUT FLUX MEASUREMENT

A new approach to control the speed and rotor flux of an induction motor using the theory of the sliding-mode is presented. Sabanovic's equations for an induction motor are first modified to a state space form suitable for the present design of the algorithm. For controlling the speed and rotor flux of the drive, a simple control algorithm is proposed based on the existence of a certain positive definite matrix. Lyapunov direct method is used to ensure the reaching and sustaining of sliding-mode. Obviation of flux measurement is achieved through manipulation of Stanley's equations. Simulation studies are conducted. The control algorithm exhibits excellent drive performance in the presence of load disturbances and stator and rotor resistances changes up to 100% of the nominal values.

Stabilization of differential repetitive processes

Differential repetitive processes are a subclass of 2D systems that arise in modeling physical processes with identical repetitions of the same task and in the analysis of other control problems such as the design of iterative learning control laws. These models have proved to be efficient within the framework of linear dynamics, where control laws designed in this setting have been verified experimentally, but there are few results for nonlinear dynamics. This paper develops new results on the stability, stabilization and disturbance attenuation, using an H (a) norm measure, for nonlinear differential repetitive processes. These results are then applied to design iterative learning control algorithms under model uncertainty and sensor failures described by a homogeneous Markov chain with a finite set of states. The resulting design algorithms can be computed using linear matrix inequalities.

Predictive control for non-linear systems using neural networks

A neural network based predictive controller design algorithm is introduced for non-linear control systems. It is shown that the use of non-linear programming techniques can be avoided by using a set of affine non-linear predictors to predict the output of the non-linear process. The new predictive controller based on this design is both simple and easy to implement in practice. An on-line weight-learning algorithm for 9 neural networks is introduced, and convergence of both the weights and estimation errors is established. Predictive controller design based on the new procedure is illustrated using a growing network example.

Compression using efficient multicasting

Many multiprocessor systems have the ability to broadcast and/or multicast information efficiently. However, this ability is often overlooked when designing algorithms for these systems. In this paper, we introduce a new compression technique that uses efficient multicasting to significantly reduce the amount of information Communicated during parallel and distributed computation, resulting in significantly faster algorithms for Fast Fourier Transforms and sorting on shared memory parallel models with limited bandwidth. These algorithms demonstrate the importance of taking advantage of efficient multicasting. The compression technique uses a new, natural variant of Ramsey theory, which may be of independent interest. (C) 2001 Academic Press.

Discrete-time linear-quadratic (LQ) optimal and nonlinear flow control in multi-source connection-oriented communication networks

In this paper, control theoretic approach is applied to design a new, optimal flow controller for multi-source connection-oriented communication networks. The networks are modelled its discrete time, nth order systems. On the basis of the system state space description, a feedback control law is derived by minimising a quadratic cost functional. The proposed analytical solution to the optimisation problem allows the expression of control law in a closed form, which is simple in implementation and guarantees efficient rate computations. Afterwards, nonlinearity is introduced into the basic controller operation, which limits the transmission rates to the network transfer capabilities. The closed-loop system stability of the obtained Solution is demonstrated,, and conditions for data loss elimination and full bandwidth usage at the node implementing the designed algorithm are presented, and strictly proved. ON DECENTRALIZED HIERARCHICAL STABILIZATION OF A LARGE-SCALE SYSTEM WITH CONSTRAINTS

A new stabilization method of a large-scale dynamic system, consisting of a set of interconnected subsystems, is presented in this paper. The topology of the interconnected subsystems is given as a network containing nodes with only one ingoing link, and none, one, or more outgoing links. Here, when the notion “node” is used a subsystem is assumed, and the links stand for the subsystem interconnections. The stabilization method is made only by the use of local linear state feedback around each subsystem, in order to satisfy constraints given in the problem. The interconnections among the subsystems are assumed to be nonlinear, time-varying. According to the topology of the large-scale system, the method of stabilization is hierarchic, one proceeds from node to node, and is applicable from a computer standpoint. A design algorithm follows directly, and can be made using the Generate and Test method for each subsystem independently, thus enabling designers to use a computer which has a video terminal as a peripheral unit and providing a possibility for interactive applications.

Modified error decentralized control with observer backstepping

In this paper, an output feedback version of the modified error method is presented, for linear coupled plants. The novelty lies in the combination of a modified control function of Lyapunov with the observer backstepping technique to obtain a totally decentralized output feedback scheme. Furthermore, the design algorithm is presented in a new recursive form that goes beyond the general expressions yielded by the backstepping. The decentralization, i.e. the elimination of the cross-terms from the obtained multivariable controller, is rendered possible by a new choice of the regulated errors in the backstepping procedure. The internal stability and the tracking performances of the closed-loop system are still preserved, as long as the observer convergence is guaranteed and the H-infinity-norm of the plant interaction quotient is less than one. The developed scheme is successfully applied to the control of a rougher flotation phenomenological simulator.
