Segmenting transparent phase objects, such as biological cells from brightfield microscope images, is a difficult problem due to the lack of observable intensity contrast and noise. Previous image analysis solutions have used excessive de- focusing or physical models to obtain the underlying phase properties. Here, an improved cell boundary detection algorithm is proposed to accurately segment multiple cells within the level set framework. This uses a novel speed term based on local phase and local orientation derived from the monogenic signal, which renders the algorithm invariant to intensity, making it ideal for these images. The new method can robustly handle noise and local minima, and distinguish touching cells. Validation is shown against manual expert segmentations.

We sought to develop a fall-related injury prevention system using a telemetry acceleration and angular velocity monitor, and an air bag. In this study, we have developed a fall detection system using both acceleration and angular velocity signals and triggering the inflation of an air bag. Sixteen subjects mimicked falls and their acceleration waveforms were monitored. Then, we developed a fall detection algorithm that could detect signals 300 ms before the fall. This signal was used as a trigger to inflate the air bag to a capacity of 2.4 L. While the proposed system can aid in preventing fall-related injuries, further development is needed to miniaturize the inflation system.

This paper presents a new method for reconstructing rectilinear buildings from single images under the assumption of flat terrain. An intuition of the method is that, given an image composed of rectilinear buildings, the 3D buildings can be geometrically reconstructed by using the image only. The recovery algorithm is formulated in terms of two objective functions which are based on the equivalence between the vector normal to the interpretation plane in the image space and the vector normal to the rotated interpretation plane in the object space. These objective functions are minimized with respect to the camera pose, the building dimensions, locations and orientations to obtain estimates for the structure of the scene. The method potentially provides a solution for large-scale urban modelling using aerial images, and can be easily extended to deal with piecewise planar objects in a more general situation.

The detection of MIMO signals presents a formidable computation challenge due to the inherent complexity incurred by matrix-type wireless fading channels. To reduce the hardware cost, linear MIMO detection algorithms can be used instead of non-linear space-time processing. Conventionally, adaptive linear algorithms such as RLS and LMS are treated separately in implementation from matrix inversion based algorithms such as ZF and MMSE. In this paper, we identify the similarities between the QR-decomposition based forms of RLS and MMSE MIMO detection and present a unified systolic array implementation that can accommodate both. In the meanwhile, some subtle but important differences also exist. As a result, the unified array must have a size of N r x N r (assuming N t les N r ) and both array inputs and array operations need to be controlled accordingly. As special cases of RLS and MMSE, LMS and ZF can also be realized in the same array, making the array flexible enough for all linear MIMO detection algorithms.

In the conventional zero-forcing successive interference cancellation (ZF-SIC) detection algorithm of vertical Bell-Labs layered space-time (V-BLAST) architecture, the detection algorithm does not attempt to eliminate the effect of the error propagation, which is significantly deleterious to hybrid automatic repeat request (H-ARQ) scheme using bit-level Chase combining. Based on two ordering approaches respectively, we propose two novel H-ARQ bit-level Chase combining algorithms in this paper, which employ a new log-likelihood ratio (LLR) calculation algorithm to minimize the effect of the error propagation. Additionally, we bring forward a new pairwise LLR combining technique to enhance the reliability of ordering stage considerably. Through simulation results, it is shown that the new proposed algorithms outperform the conventional ones in system performance.

Event detection algorithms cover enormous relevance when their execution environment has reduced capabilities as the CPU computing power, memory budget and overall energy capacity. It is the case for embedded wireless sensor nodes or motes that promise an actual and massive ubiquity on future real world applications. We have implemented a "soft" acoustic event detector of human activities, particularly speech signal. The algorithm has been adapted from the wireless multi-channel IEEE 802.11 QoS VoIP field. The events are detected on the base of the change of rate of the sum of the current input signal energy average plus the signal energy standard deviation values. The detector performance is presented in terms of false and positive detections, for three input signals with different SNR levels.

The smart grid is entering the era of practical pilot projects and readiness to scale. This has been the result of a movement in technology, regulation, and a learning process for all involved. This paper discusses several areas of experience with the "intelligent utility network", IBM"s nomenclature for its smart grid concept. Topics addressed are the grid wise demonstration with the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest Lab and other research work related to the IUN, projects in progress with customers to create the foundations of a smart grid, technology and architecture, and aspects for the enablement of alternative and distributed energy and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. From a business perspective, the IBM IUN utility coalition and the IUN maturity model will be discussed.

Accurate reference point detection is crucial for features extraction to improve the performance of fingerprint recognition system. Many reference-point detection algorithms work well in good-quality fingerprints, however, most fail to correctly locate the reference point in poor-quality fingerprints with cracks and scars, dry skin, or poor ridge-and-valley contrast. In this paper, we propose a method to detect a reference point in an enhanced fingerprint image by using a novel and effective enhancement approach. It preserves true ridges and valleys, and it also repairs the damaged ridges and valleys, which in turn helps to detect reference points reliably and accurately. Experimental results on public databases show that the proposed method has better results when a reference point detection method applies to the enhanced image, than to the original image.

This work introduces a modified torpedo detection algorithm (MTDA) that improves upon the range estimates of an earlier torpedo detection algorithm (TDA). The original TDA detects the presence of a direct path and a surface reflected path for a torpedo acoustic tonal using the fast orthogonal search (FOS) algorithm. In the original TDA the candidate functions used by FOS were sinusoidal functions at a constant frequency. Using the frequencies of the direct and reflected path signal, the TDA estimated the torpedo range. It is known that the frequency of the direct path and reflect path signal will vary in time. It is also well known that correlating a received signal with the expected signal results in the lowest probability of error in detection (matched filter). Thus in this work the candidate functions used by FOS are functions whose frequencies vary in time (chirp signals) as theoretically expected for the direct and reflected path signals. Also, the FOS algorithm is modified to fit the direct and reflected paths in pairs. The pair of frequencies that fit the highest energy is determined to be the direct and reflected path signal and the range used to generate that candidate pair is used as the range estimate. The MTDA algorithm is simulated for a torpedo approaching an receiver at several angles and the range estimations are shown. These results are compared with the earlier TDA and shown to be significantly improved.

There has been much interest in mining anomaly patterns in time series. However, different datasets may have different lengths of anomaly patterns, and usually, the length of anomaly patterns is unknown. This paper uses k-distance of a pattern and median to define anomaly factor, the degree of anomaly, presents- definition- of- anomaly pattern based on it and two algorithms, algorithm 1 and algorithm 2. Algorithm 1 uses quadratic regression to segment time series, and obtains the range of length patterns. Algorithm 2 uses DTW (dynamic time warping) and variable methods to calculate similarity of patterns dynamically, detects anomaly patterns in a given time series automatically. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our detection algorithm for anomaly patterns with both synthetic and ECGs data sets, and the experimental results confirm that our methods can detect anomaly patterns with different lengths.
