A study of the performance of a generalized exceedance algorithm for detecting noise events caused by road traffic

A key question for road traffic noise management is whether prediction of human response to road traffic noise could be improved by accounting for noise events instead of, or in addition to, energy equivalent or percentile measures of noise exposure. However, there is a critical prior question: how should noise events in road traffic be measured? Even at moderate traffic flow rates, detecting and counting noise events caused by road traffic is not a trivial exercise, and as yet there is no generally accepted noise event detection algorithm. This paper investigates the performance of a generalized exceedance algorithm for detecting noise events, constructed on the basis of the literature on noise events caused by road traffic. For this purpose, a microscopic traffic simulation model, coupled to an emission model that accounts for distributions of sound power levels of individual vehicles, is used to simulate one-hour time histories of the noise level in the proximity of a roadway, for an exhaustive set of traffic flow/composition and propagation distance conditions in unshielded locations. The validity and reliability of the number of noise events detected by the generalized algorithm in these one-hour time histories is then evaluated for a range of algorithm parameter sets. By discarding parameter sets that do not result in an algorithm that returns valid or reliable counts, and by examining redundancy in the remaining ones, a small number of representative parameter sets is identified, which may prove useful in the construction of event-based indicators supplementary to energy-equivalent measures of road traffic noise.

Understanding and identifying amino acid repeats

Amino acid repeats (AARs) are abundant in protein sequences. They have particular roles in protein function and evolution. Simple repeat patterns generated by DNA slippage tend to introduce length variations and point mutations in repeat regions. Loss of normal and gain of abnormal function owing to their variable length are potential risks leading to diseases. Repeats with complex patterns mostly refer to the functional domain repeats, such as the well-known leucine-rich repeat and WD repeat, which are frequently involved in protein-protein interaction. They are mainly derived from internal gene duplication events and stabilized by 'gate-keeper' residues, which play crucial roles in preventing inter-domain aggregation. AARs are widely distributed in different proteomes across a variety of taxonomic ranges, and especially abundant in eukaryotic proteins. However, their specific evolutionary and functional scenarios are still poorly understood. Identifying AARs in protein sequences is the first step for the further investigation of their biological function and evolutionary mechanism. In principle, this is an NP-hard problem, as most of the repeat fragments are shaped by a series of sophisticated evolutionary events and become latent periodical patterns. It is not possible to define a uniform criterion for detecting and verifying various repeat patterns. Instead, different algorithms based on different strategies have been developed to cope with different repeat patterns. In this review, we attempt to describe the amino acid repeat-detection algorithms currently available and compare their strategies based on an in-depth analysis of the biological significance of protein repeats.

Clinical utility of intrathoracic impedance monitoring to alert patients with an implanted de vice of deteriorating chronic heart failure

Aims To evaluate the utility of intrathoracic impedance monitoring for detecting heart failure (HF) deterioration in patients with an implanted cardiac resynchronization/defibrillation device. Methods and results Patients enrolled in the European InSync Sentry Observational Study were audibly alerted by a device algorithm if a decrease in intrathoracic impedance suggested fluid accumulation. Clinical HIF status and device data were assessed at enrolment, during regular follow-up, and if patients presented with an alert or HIF deterioration. Data from 373 subjects were analysed. Fifty-three alert events and a total of 53 clinical events (HF deterioration defined by worsening of HF signs and symptoms) were reported during a median of 4.2 months. Adjusted for multiple events per patient, the alert detected clinical HIF deterioration with 60% sensitivity (95% CI 46-73) and with a positive predictive value of 60% (95% CI 46-73). Higher NYHA class at baseline was predictive for adequate alert events during follow-up (P < 0.05). In 11 of 20 HIF deteriorations without preceding alert, an upstroke of the fluid index occurred without reaching the programmed alert threshold. Conclusion A device-based algorithm that alerts patients in case of decreasing intrathoracic impedance facilitates the detection of HF deterioration. Future randomized, controlled trials are needed to test whether the tailored use of intrathoracic impedance monitoring can improve the ambulatory management of patients with chronic HIF and an implanted device.

Optimal combination of discriminators for differentiating ventricular from supraventricular tachycardia by dual-chamber defibrillators

Introduction: Dual-chamber implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) use discriminators to differentiate between supraventricular tachycardias (SVTs) and ventricular tachycardias (VT), the accuracy of which may depend on the type and method used. ICDs can combine rate branching of tachyarrhythmias according to their A:V relationship with two SVT-VT discriminators in each rate branch, using ANY (either) or ALL (both) logic. Our goal was to determine the optimal discriminator combination. Methods: Stored electrogram data from 596 spontaneous tachyarrhythmias from 203 patients with Photon DR ICDs were analyzed. Arrhythmias are first classified by the relationship of atrial and ventricular rates (rate branches V < A, V = A, and V > A) followed by additional discriminators: morphology and/or sudden onset if V = A;morphology and/or interval stability if V < A. Data were analyzed for all combinations of ANY and ALL logic. Results: Sensitivity and specificity were calculated for all spontaneous episodes in each analysis. V = A branch: ALL logic produced unacceptably low sensitivity, whereas morphology provided only similar sensitivity but better specificity than ANY logic. A > V branch: ANY logic provided adequate sensitivity. The combination of morphology only in V = A with interval stability or morphology (ANY logic) in V < A, provided the optimal result with sensitivity, specificity, positive, and negative predictive values of 99%, 79%, 87%, and 98%, respectively. Conclusion: SVT-VT combined discriminators strongly influence dual-chamber SVT-VT discrimination performance. In our study, optimal programming is morphology only in the V = A branch and morphology or interval stability (ANY) in the V < A branch. ALL logic should be used with caution due to loss of sensitivity.

Non-proline cis peptide bonds in proteins

In a non-redundant set of 571 proteins from the Brookhaven Protein Data Base, a total of 43 non-proline cis peptide bonds were identified. Average geometrical parameters of the well-defined cis peptide bonds in proteins determined at high resolution show that some parameters, most notably the bond angle at the amide bond nitrogen, deviate significantly from the corresponding one in the trans conformation. Since the same feature was observed in cis amide bonds in small molecule structures found in the Cambridge Structural Data Base, a new set of parameters for the refinement of protein structures containing non-Pro cis peptide bonds is proposed. A striking preference was observed for main-chain dihedral angles of the residues involved in cis peptide bonds. All residues N-terminal and most residues C-terminal to a non-Pro cis peptide bond (except Gly) are located in the beta-region of a phi/psi plot. Also, all of the few C-terminal residues (except Gly) located in the alpha-region of the phi/psi plot constitute the start of an alpha-helix in the respective structure. In the majority of cases, an intimate side-chain/side-chain interaction was observed between the flanking residues, often involving aromatic side-chains. Interestingly, most of the cases found occur in functionally important regions such as close to the active site of proteins. It is intriguing that many of the proteins containing non-proline cis peptide bonds are carbohydrate-binding or processing proteins. The occurrence of these unusual peptide bonds is significantly more frequent in structures determined at high resolution than in structures determined at medium and low resolution, suggesting that these bonds may be more abundant than previously thought. On the basis of our experience with the structure determination of coagulation factor XIII, we developed an algorithm for the identification of possibly overlooked cis peptide bonds that exploits the deviations of geometrical parameters from ideality.

A Landslide Monitoring Technique Based on Dual-Receiver and Phase Difference Measurements

A new landslide detection technique that installs a transmitter (Tx) array at the area of interest to transmit signals to two receivers is presented. It detects the phase difference change, due to the Tx displacement, at the dual-receiver system to monitor near real time of small but critical area landslide in centimeter range. The dual-receiver system, apart at a small distance, demodulates the receiving signals independently but coherently. An ambiguity route, which corresponds to a landslide's movement without change on phase difference, is defined and must be avoided. No field test was tried, but three simulated examples are given to illustrate the technique.

Optimal current distribution control for parallel electrolytic baths

A simple optimal balance control scheme for electrolysation plants is proposed. It can be realized through the use of a commercially available model predictive control (MPC) package. In most cases, much property data or information regarding disturbances, such as the deterioration of electrodes and ion exchange membranes, is necessary in order to calculate the optimal operating conditions for energy conservation. However, the proposed controller can achieve the optimal conditions without them. In this paper, it is proved that the resultant converged operating conditions of the proposed controller are identical to the actual optimal condition. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A reassessment of the percentage of tornadic mesocyclones

A large set of data collected by numerous Weather Surveillance Radar-1988 Doppler (WSR-88D) units around the United States was analyzed to reassess the percentage of tornadic mesocyclones. Out of the 5322 individual mesocyclone detections that satisfied the relatively stringent WSR-88D Mesocyclone detection algorithm objective criteria, only 26% were associated with tornadoes. In terms of height or altitude of mesocyclone base, 15% of midaltitude mesocyclone detections were tornadic, and more than 40% of low-altitude mesocyclone detections (e.g., those with bases <= 1000 m above radar level) were tornadic. These results confirm that a low-altitude mesocyclone is much more likely to be associated with a tornado than is a midaltitude mesocyclone, and more generally, that the percentage of tornadic mesocyclones is indeed lower than previously thought.

A method for detecting degenerate structures in planetary gear trains

A method for detecting degenerate structures in planetary gear trains (PGTs) is presented. In the context of the graph representation of the kinematic structure of PGTs, the method uses the concept of fundamental circuits and their grouping to generate the detection algorithm. The main advantage is the reduction in the required combinatorial analysis relative to other methods. A computer implementation of the algorithm was used to obtain the graphs of all the PGTs of up to nine members that contain degenerate structures. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Robust Design of Detecting Contaminants in Facade Cleaning Applications

As the number of high-rise buildings is increasing, more methods of exterior-wall cleaning are being developed. There are a few models based on artificial intelligence that determine the type and level of contamination primarily by moving the cleaning area. In this study, we propose an system using YOLOv3 algorithm, color-detection, to install on facade cleaning robot and brightness-discrimination. There are three types of contaminant-detection parameters: size, color, and brightness, and these parameters are subjected to a robust optimization process to maintain a constant detection rate under different conditions. The three parameters are determined via Taguchi method with signal to noise ratio and noise factors. An environment for algorithm testing is established, and artificial contamination is implemented on the specimen. A field test with the detection algorithm shall be performed in the near future.
