Lane detection can provide important information for safety driving. In this paper, a real time vision-based lane detection method is presented to find the position and type of lanes in each video frame. In the proposed lane detection method, lane hypothesis is generated and verified based on an effective combination of lane-mark edge-link features. First, lane-mark candidates are searched inside region of interest (ROI). During this searching process, an extended edge-linking algorithm with directional edge-gap closing is used to produce more complete edge-links, and features like lane-mark edge orientation and lane-mark width are used to select candidate lane-mark edge-link pairs. For the verification of lane-mark candidates, color is checked inside the region enclosed by candidate edge-link pairs in YUV color space. Additionally, the continuity of the lane is estimated employing a Bayesian probability model based on lane-mark color and edge-link length ratio. Finally, a simple lane departure model is built to detect lane departures based on lane locations in the image. Experiment results show that the proposed lane detection method can work robustly in real-time, and can achieve an average speed of 30~50ms per frame for 180×120 image size, with a correct detection rate over 92%.

A new vehicle detection algorithm for high resolution images is proposed in this paper. The new method is based on intensity curve of images. It can detect the presence of vehicles via different intensity curve characters between moving objects and background. Our approach is a real-time detection algorithm. It outperforms the existing traditional algorithms, such as mixture Gaussian background model and Bayes background model. The experimental result for 20-minutes high resolution video shows that our algorithms accuracy is up to 98%.

As biometric technologies such as fingerprint recognition technology become more widespread, the danger posed by security attacks using forged fingerprints is increasing. To counter this threat, diverse technologies are being developed to detect fingerprint forgery. However, thus far there has no method of evaluating the performance of forged fingerprint detection algorithms that has been confirmed to be reliable by achieving reproducible performance test results. This paper proposes a method for objective performance evaluation of forged fingerprint technology. Unlike previous methods of evaluating the performance of forged fingerprint detection algorithms, the proposed performance evaluation method can reproduce evaluation results, and can be used for technology evaluation. To eliminate the ambiguity of the method and express it in a formal manner, the Evaluation Model of Forged Fingerprint detection (EMFFD) has been developed. In addition, various metrics have been defined to measure the performance evaluation of forged fingerprints.

A wireless ECG monitoring system is presented that is able to perform high-quality ECG signal acquisition, beat detection, and real time monitoring of skin-electrode impedance which can be used to monitor the presence of motion artefacts. The whole system consumes only 170μW while performing local beat detection. The beat detection algorithm was verified against the MIT-BIH arrhythmia database and obtains a median sensitivity of 99.74% and positive predictivity of 99.87%. The system was validated using applied signals at varying signal to noise ratio as well as on human volunteers.

Dendritic spines play an essential role in the central nervous system. Recent experiments have revealed that neuron functional properties are highly correlated with the statistical and morphological changes of the dendritic spines. In this paper, we propose a new multi scale approach for detecting dendritic spines in a 2D Maximum Intensity Projection (MIP) image of the 3D neuron data stacks collected from a 2-photon laser scanning confocal microscope. The proposed method utilizes the curvilinear structure detector in conjunction with the multi scale spine detection algorithm which automatically and accurately extracts and segments the spines with variational sizes along the dendrite. In addition, a slice-based spine detection algorithm is also proposed to detect spines which are hidden from the MIP image within the dendrite area. Experimental results show that our proposed method is effective for automatic spine detection and is able to accurately segment dendrite.

In this paper, we present an algorithm for joint symbol detection (JSD) at the receiver in a Multi-Device (MD) STBC-MIMO System. We apply Cross Entropy Optimization (CEO) to JSD problem in a MD-STBC-MIMO system. We find that this algorithm has good performance especially at a low SNR region in a rank-deficient MD-STBC-MIMO system. ML detector, Sphere Decoder (SD) and Semi-definite relaxation (SDR) are computationally complex. The proposed CEO detector finds a nearly optimal solution in real time and also requires very low amount of computation as compared to the ML, SD and SDR.

Nowadays, X-ray mammography is the most common method in early detection and diagnosis of breast cancer. In order to shorten the duration of mammogram analysis, and also to contribute radiologists review and analysis, Computer Aided Systems have been developed. One of the first and most important steps of these systems is the segmentation of breast region. In this study, for the breast region segmentation a new derivative-based threshold detection algorithm has been developed. In distinguishing the breast area from the background to determine the most appropriate threshold value, mammogram histograms in MIAS database are examined and classified, phantom mammogram image is prepared and the global threshold detection algorithm is validated.

In this paper, directional empirical mode decomposition is introduced into shot boundary detection method. In the method, every frame in videos is decomposed by DEMD into a series of Intrinsic Mode Function images and a residue image. The IMF image with the lowest frequency of each frame is removed and a substitute frame is recomposed by the other IMF images and the residue image. These substitute frames are used to calculate differences of adjacent frames in order to avoid mistaken detections caused by abrupt illumination changes. A region-based object tracking method is also applied to avoid mistaken detections caused by object motions. The results of experiments show that the precision of detecting shot boundaries is significantly improved.

Smart cameras are important components in any Human Computer Interaction. In any remote surveillance scenario, smart cameras have to take intelligent decisions to select frames of interest to minimize communication and processing overhead. A clustering based change detection algorithm has been implemented in our smart camera system for filtering frames with significant changes. In this paper we propose a platform based framework for implementing clustering based change detection algorithm using HW-SW co-design based methodology. The complete system is implemented on Xilinx XUP Virtex-II Pro FPGA board. The overall algorithm is running on PowerPC405 and some of the blocks which are computationally intensive and more frequently called are implemented as custom IP using VHDL. Total gate count of the design is 2699K.
