This paper describes the performance of beat detection and heart rate variability (HRV) feature extraction on electrocardiogram signals which have been compressed and reconstructed with a lossy compression algorithm. The set partitioning in hierarchical trees (SPIHT) compression algorithm was used with sixteen compression ratios (CR) between 2 and 50 over the records of the MIT/BIH arrhythmia database. Sensitivities and specificities between 99% and 85% were computed for each CR utilised. The extracted HRV features were between 99% and 82% similar to the features extracted from the annotated records. A notable accuracy drop over all features extracted was noted beyond a CR of 30, with falls of 10% accuracy beyond this compression ratio.

Nodes in contention-based (beaconless) georouting forward packets towards a known destination position without the knowledge of the neighborhood. The only existing methods that guarantee delivery in unit disk graphs (UDG) require runtime planarization of the communication graph with either unbounded message overhead per hop while preserving the Gabriel graph property of the subgraph, or a constant overhead per hop with up to 13 control messages. In this paper we show that the next hop can be selected directly by a contention mechanism and without prior planarization. Existing greedy routing methods select the next hop with 3 messages using a RTS-CTS-DATA scheme in a timer-based contention where only the next hop neighbor responds. We extend this to provide also recovery from local minima with 3 messages per hop by the Rotational Sweep algorithm. We prove that our algorithm guarantees delivery in UDGs, and also yields routes that are shorter than or equal to the combined greedy and face routing with Gabriel graph planarization. Simulation results show that especially the duration of the contention process can be significantly reduced. Our algorithm can be also used for conventional beacon-based routing with guaranteed delivery without prior planarization, replacing the complicated implementation from by a very simple method which evaluates angular distances to select the proper forwarding neighbor. It also provides a simple network boundary detection algorithm, with or without beacons.

A discrete collision detection algorithm to detect self-collisions between deformable objects is presented, this is built up using a bounding volume hierarchy (BVH) and a Feature-based method. The deformations are represented by the features of the mesh, which are within the bounding volumes and consequently the updating time for the BVH is reduced. The algorithm compares the minimum bounded geometry, the 1-ring, with the other spheres of the hierarchy in order to cull away bounding volumes (BV) that are far apart. The 3D objects utilised are surface-based and are deformed by warping, control points of splines, and a mass-spring model.

This paper proposes an efficient omnidirectional surveillance system for health care purposes. The proposed surveillance system is used to detect fainted person at health care centers such as old folk's home, hospital, and handicapped center and is located at the place with good light condition. When a fainted person is detected, it send immediate signal and thus alerts/treatments can be carried out. In this system, a wireless webcam attached with a hyperbolic mirror is used to capture the omnidirectional scene at health care centers. The captured scenes are then fed into a laptop computer for image processing, faint detection and alarm purposing. Log-polar mapping is used to map the omnidirectional images into panoramic images. An effective faint detection algorithm is designed to detect a fainted human at health care centers. Experimental results show that the proposed wireless omnidirectional surveillance system achieves high accuracy (92.99% out of 10000 testing images under good light condition) in monitoring a selected private nursing home. The observed significances of this new proposed surveillance system include: omnidirectional (360°) cover age, high data compression output images, wireless, and with effective faint detection capability.

Snecma builds CFM engines with GE for commercial aircrafts and now faces with the challenge of providing assistance to the maintenance operations of its wide fleet. Some years ago, Snecma engaged in the development of a set of algorithmic applications to monitor engine subsystems. Some health-monitoring (HM) application examples developed for Snecma's engines are presented below. An architecture proposition for HM applications is given with a list of quality indicators used in validation process. Finally, the problem of how to reach the drastic requirements in use for civil aircrafts is addressed. The conclusion sketches the methodology and software solution tested by Snecma's HM team to manage the algorithms.

VRAPS (Visual Rhythm-based Audio Playback System) is an interactive multimedia application that uses a novel visual rhythm detection technique to allow a user to control the playback speed of an audio signal by moving in front of a video camera. As traditionally defined in the context of music, a beat represents a distinctive musical event such as the hitting of a drum or the start of a new melodic note. Similarly, we define a visual beat to indicate distinctive visual events such as rhythmic gestures and dance motions. In this paper, we propose a method for automatically detecting visual beats and tempo from a video signal. As a demonstration of this technique, we present an interactive, real-time audio playback system that continuously adjusts the playback speed of an audio signal based on the visual rhythm detected from a real-time video capture device.

This paper presents a real-time algorithm for a mobile cardiac monitoring system to detect life-threatening arrhythmias. This detection algorithm focuses on two life-threatening arrhythmias ventricular tachycardia and fibrillation (VT/VF), which are detected through the application of pre-detection processing and main detection processing. In pre-detection processing, applies a statistical method to detect VT/VF. In contrast, a neural fuzzy network is applied to detect VT/VF in main detection processing. The neural fuzzy network's input features are obtained by wavelet transform and several effective extraction methods. This real-time detection algorithm outperform Amann's algorithm, with 92% accuracy and 93% sensitivity. It has been implemented as a cardiac monitoring system in a mobile phone. This system meets heart patient's requirements of early detection and out-of-hospital rehabilitation.

Many of the recently popular shape based category recognition methods require stable, connected and labeled edges as input. This paper introduces a novel method to find the most stable region boundaries in grayscale images for this purpose. In contrast to common edge detection algorithms as Canny, which only analyze local discontinuities in image brightness, our method integrates mid-level information by analyzing regions that support the local gradient magnitudes. We use a component tree where every node contains a single connected region obtained from thresholding the gradient magnitude image. Edges in the tree are defined by an inclusion relationship between nested regions in different levels of the tree. Region boundaries which are similar in shape (i. e. have a low chamfer distance) across several levels of the tree are included in the final result. Since the component tree can be calculated in quasi-linear time and chamfer matching between nodes in the component tree is reduced to analysis of the distance transformation, results are obtained in an efficient manner. The proposed detection algorithm labels all identified edges during calculation, thus avoiding the cumbersome post-processing of connecting and labeling edge responses. We evaluate our method on two reference data sets and demonstrate improved performance for shape prototype based localization of objects in images.

For spatial diversity multiple input multiple output (MIMO) radar, target echo signals received by its widely separated antennas may be semi-correlated and different in SNR. According to the correlation and SNRs of received target echo signals, a space partition based target detection method is proposed, which partition the surveillance volume into two sections, one using the coherent accumulating detector and the other using the incoherent accumulating detector. The partition method is shown to achieve an improved detection performance at a low computation cost.

The computer forensic technique that analyzes the file hidden in the computer or the file information of Windows has been widely used for the criminal check. However, these techniques had the different problems to be presented as the legal resources. The forensic viewpoint has 5 digital evidence principles such as legitimacy, identity, connectivity, speediness, integrity. This thesis is focused on the principle of connectivity. The principle of connectivity so far insisted the evidential connectivity of media, the Chain of Custody, but the research on the connectivity principle of file is not yet made. This thesis analyzed the cause of deleted file, and developed the best model. Also, it used the developed analysis technique to produce the respective model and the case for the precision of model, and applied the model to the case in order to experiment the precision detected. The detection model presented by this thesis will be the important judgmental data for the reliable evidence forensic.
