A few of the issues faced by the kurtosis detection algorithm on recent field campaigns is discussed here. The performance of the kurtosis algorithm in detecting multiple-source Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) is characterized. A new RFI statistical model is presented in the paper to take into account the behavior of RFI sources under a large foot-print. Results indicate the behavior of the kurtosis ratio under central-limit conditions due to large number of RFI sources.

Hyperspectral data consists of three dimensional images; the third dimension is the spectral signature of each pixel. The question always arises: which bands should be used and how should they be weighted. In this paper, a band selection algorithm based on the Fisher's Linear Discriminant classifier (FLD) is implemented. An initial segmentation of the image into two different classes (gas and background) is used as an input for the FLD. The combination of bands to be used is selected based on the FLD results.

Long time data recordings by ambulatory devices became common today with widespread use of high capacity memories. In this study, this technology is used on home recording device especially designed for the pre-phase sleep apnea analysis at home before having certain diagnosis by proper polysomnographic examination in a hospital. Designing a portable recording system for clinically significant signals and analyzing an associated apnea detection algorithm are two significant and complementary studies carried out and reported in this paper. According to our aim, the Holter device discussed here is capable of recordings from many channels simultaneously but specifically for this study we consider just three signals namely ECG, breathing activity and oxygen saturation which are all significant for apnea detection in polysomnographic diagnostic phase. In apnea detection part we have initially studied the algorithm based on Hilbert Transform of ECG signal. The study also includes the comparison of three selected QRS detection algorithms (digital filter based, differentiation based and higher order statistics based) for ECG processing required for the Hilbert transform based apnea detection algorithm. Differentiation based QRS algorithm is preferred over other two due to its better performance on noisy ECG signals.

A detection module has been prototyped for cognitive radio usage in the industrial, scientific and medical (ISM) band using time domain as well as frequency domain detection. Duty cycle and pulse width characteristics are used for detection in the time domain. Fast Fourier transform (FFT) signatures and spectral occupancy information is used to confirm the detection in the frequency domain. The detection module is designed to behave dynamically. Varying the input parameters to the detector module adjusts the detection overhead. The overhead varies depending on the relative usage of a fast detection algorithm versus a slower but more accurate scheme; the number of device types to be detected; and whether frequency-selective scanning or wide-band detection is needed. The prototype is built on a software radio platform and is targeted for future software defined radios (SDR), and can be adapted to current and future orthogonal frequency division multiplexed (OFDM) systems.

In this paper, an intrusion detection system (IDS) based on adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) rule is realized to minimize the detection delay for the deauthentication denial-of-service (DOS) attacks on the medium access control (MAC) layer of a wireless local area network (WLAN). Both the average sequence number gap (SNG) between the successive packets and the average statistical value of the de-authentication packets received by an Access Point (AP) are used to detect the deauthentication DoS attack. The proposed ANFIS-IDS experimental platform is implemented and tested against real deauthentication DoS attack to empirically evaluate its average detection delay (ADD) and average false alert rate (FAR). The performance of the IDS using the proposed ANFIS method is compared with non-parametric sequential change point detection (NPSCPD) algorithm in a practical WLAN environment.

This paper introduces an intelligent high-frame-rate video logging system that can automatically detect high-speed unpredictable behavior and record video comprising images with dimensions of 512 × 512 pixels at 1000 fps. To capture high-frame-rate video of crucial moments of abnormal behavior in high-speed periodic motion, a real-time abnormal behavior detection algorithm is implemented on a highspeed vision platform, IDP Express, which can record both input images and processed results at 1000 fps for video logging. Several experiments were performed using a machine with repetitive operation at a frequency of 15 Hz and video of the abnormal behavior was automatically recorded to verify the effectiveness of our system.

Based on binocular visual theory, a new method is proposed for solving the marking-points matching and tracking issues in the micro-table 3D posture measurement system. The four marking-points of the micro-table are detected by Harris corner detection algorithm, an improved epipolar constraint match method is used to make the corresponding marking-points be restricted in a region, circle region search method is used to match the same marking-point, and the template-based recognition algorithm is used to track the marking-points in real-time image frames. The experiment results verify the effectiveness of this method.

Assessing the usability of objects for a specific population can be laborious and time consuming. Furthermore, for the older adult population, the usability of objects involved in the completion of tasks of daily living is critical to `aging-in-place' and the preservation of independence. This paper explores the automation of the process of observing older adults with Alzheimer's as they use various types of faucets. Features extracted from video and audio signals encode the subjects' progression through a hand-washing task and temporal segmentation is used to determine the state of the process at each video frame. Histograms of optical flow, a hand-tracking particle filter, and a water detection algorithm are used to extract features encoding the state of the handwashing process. A Hidden Markov Support Vector Machine is used to label each video frame of the handwashing process as belonging to one of five states with an overall accuracy of 93.58%.
