Emerging wireless systems demand more spectrum in order to provide high data rate services. It is known that most of the licensed frequency bands are underutilized because of the rigid spectrum allocation. Cognitive radios aim to relief the situation by identifying and exploiting the underutilized radio spectrum. A key task of the cognitive radio is spectrum sensing, which finds free spectrum and detects licensed spectrum user transmissions. This paper presents an FPGA implementation of an autocorrelation-based feature detector for OFDM-based primary user signals. The autocorrelation-based detection algorithm is optimized in order to achieve power and area efficient hardware realization. The algorithm is implemented in an FPGA evaluation environment, and the performance is verified with measurements.

In this paper, we consider the problem of "evil twin" attacks in wireless local area networks (WLANs). An evil twin is essentially a phishing (rogue) Wi-Fi access point (AP) that looks like a legitimate one (with the same SSID name). It is set up by an adversary, who can eavesdrop on wireless communications of users' Internet access. Existing evil twin detection solutions are mostly for wireless network administrators to verify whether a given AP is in an authorized list or not, instead of for a wireless client to detect whether a given AP is authentic or evil. Such administrator-side solutions are limited, expensive, and not available for many scenarios. For example, for traveling users who use wireless networks at airports, hotels, or cafes, they need to protect themselves from evil twin attacks (instead of relying on those wireless network providers, which typically may not provide strong security monitoring/management service). Thus, a lightweight and effective solution for these users is highly desired. In this work, we propose a novel user-side evil twin detection technique that outperforms traditional administrator-side detection methods in several aspects. Unlike previous approaches, our technique does not need a known authorized AP/host list, thus it is suitable for users to identify and avoid evil twins. Our technique does not strictly rely on training data of target wireless networks, nor depend on the types of wireless networks. We propose to exploit fundamental communication structures and properties of such evil twin attacks in wireless networks and to design new active, statistical and anomaly detection algorithms. "Our preliminary evaluation in real-world widely deployed 802.11b and 802.11g wireless networks shows very promising results. We can identify evil twins with a very high detection rate while keeping a very low false positive rate.

The introduction of Phase-Change Memory (PCM) as a main memory technology has great potential to achieve a large energy reduction. PCM has desirable energy and scalability properties, but its use for main memory also poses challenges such as limited write endurance with at most 10 7 writes per bit cell before failure. This paper describes techniques to enhance the lifetime of PCM when used for main memory. Our techniques are (a) writeback minimization with new cache replacement policies, (b) avoidance of unnecessary writes, which write only the bit cells that are actually changed, and (c) endurance management with a novel PCM-aware swap algorithm for wear-leveling. A failure detection algorithm is also incorporated to improve the reliability of PCM. With these approaches, the lifetime of a PCM main memory is increased from just a few days to over 8 years.

This paper presents a method to identify the edges and corners of clothes in an image using image processing methods. In clothes manipulation, it is important for the GUI program to identify the shape of clothes before spreading and folding. The first step for clothes manipulation is that the robot needs to grab two real corners so the clothes can be spread easily. The computer vision system becomes an important part in finding the corner of clothes. With the help of image processing, the corner of clothes can be identified for the robot to spread and fold the clothes. This method to identify the corner of clothes in the image is by applying certain image processing methods. Some basic morphological operations are used to filter the image captured in order to reduce the noise and disturbance and also extract the essential data from the image for further processing. The purpose of using this method is to identify the pixel in the image which is potentially represented as a corner of the clothes and become a starting point for the robot in clothes manipulation.

To improve the bandwidth efficiency of the classical orthogonal cooperative transmission scheme while maintaining the cooperative gain, a novel non-orthogonal amplify-and-forward cooperative scheme based on distributed space-time code is proposed. In this scheme, the orthogonal characteristic of Alamouti space-time code is utilized to make cooperative users relay on the shared channel resources so that better bandwidth efficiency can be achieved. Maximum likelihood (ML) and linear detection algorithms are then devised for the destination node. Theoretical and simulation results show that with a specified spectral efficiency, the proposed scheme outperforms the classical scheme in terms of capacity, outage probability and bit error rate (BER) performance.

Image mosaic is useful for the traditional image process. We proposed a novel feature based sequence image stitching method for the image mosaic system. In this method, the whole image registration process has five steps, which includes feature point detection, feature descriptor extraction, feature points matching, estimation of the motion model parameters and stitching process. In these steps, difference of Gaussian image is used to get the extreme points as the feature points, then the SIFT descriptor operator is used to describe the feature, finally random sample consensus method is used for estimating the motion parameters. We test our method on two kinds of sequence images, the artificial images and the real images. The results show the stitching method is robust.

Cooperative relaying has been shown as a promising approach to leverage the transmit diversity that is traditionally realized by installing multiple antennas on a single device. In digital relaying, one of the key issues is that relays might receive in error, resulting in error propagation to the destination. Despite error detection codes can be used to prevent error propagation, performing error detection algorithms incurs delay and processing overhead at relays. An alternative approach is to set a threshold value, whereby the relay forwards when the instantaneous signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) exceeds the threshold. Most existing threshold-based relaying schemes implicitly assume the relays are placed in the middle between the source and the destination, whereby a single threshold is applied to the source-relay channel for making the cooperation decision. In infrastructureless wireless networks, relays may be randomly distributed in the network and thus, the relaying scheme based on a single threshold may choose the relay with a weak one-hop channel to forward that degrades diversity combining. In this paper, a threshold digital relaying scheme based on double testing is proposed where both the source-relay and the relay-destination channels are tested to select the cooperating relays. The end-to-end bit error rate (BER) performance is derived theoretically, and compared with simulation results. Different network topologies are considered to demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed double testing digital relaying scheme over the single testing schemes.

This paper describes a new data visualization method using a three-dimensional dendrogram to And the relationship between similar text documents. For the detection of similarities in documents, we introduce two basic evaluation functions, "LCS" and "SED." We constructed and developed the proposed algorithm in MATLAB language, and conducted a comparison measurement and examined the evaluations. The validity of the proposed method can be verified by applying actual documents to demonstrate the 3D visualization.

A device capable of continuously monitoring an individual's levels of alertness in real-time is highly desirable for preventing drowsiness and microsleep related accidents. This paper presents a development of non-intrusive and light-insensitive video-based system that uses computer-vision methods to measure facial metric for identifying visible facial signs of drowsiness and behavioral microsleep. The developed system uses a remotely placed camera with a near-infrared illumination to acquire the video. The computer-vision methods are then applied to sequentially localize face, eyes, and eyelids positions to measure ratio of eye closure. The system was evaluated in frontal images of nine subjects with varying facial structures and exhibiting several ratio of eye closure and eye gaze under fully dark and ambient lighting conditions. The preliminary results showed promising results with sufficient accuracy to distinguish between fully closed, half closed, and fully open eyes.

We propose a novel interface called Twinkle for interacting with an arbitrary physical surface using a handheld projector and a camera. When a user flashes a projection light on an object, the projected images react as if the user touched the object with the light. The handheld device recognizes the features of the physical environment and displays images and sounds that are generated in real-time according to the user's motion and collisions of projected images with objects. We realize this system by using several image-processing techniques and a collision detection algorithm. We also use an acceleration sensor to compensate for the image processing. In this paper, we explain the principle of interacting with a physical surface. Then, we describe the implementation of the prototype system and some application examples.
