A DCT-domain based character detection algorithm is proposed for video stream. It utilizes the directional features of the texture in character blocks and the property that the characters in video usually distribute in row or column. The character/non-character blocks are effectively separated by a new adaptive threshold, then the noise and false text regions are further removed by morphological operation. Finally, the text regions are accurately obtained by horizontal and vertical projection. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach can detect characters accurately even in video with complex background , and it is of good robustness and high practical value.

This paper describes a procedure to evaluate the performance of ship detection algorithms for synthetic aperture radar (SAR) using real SAR images and automatic identification system (AIS) data as ground truth. Accurate AIS-SAR data association is achieved by correcting the AIS data for the SAR induced position errors by exploiting SAR acquisition parameters and vessel state information (speed and course) provided by AIS tracks. The methodology has been tested on a ship detection algorithm based on mathematical morphology which is described in this paper. The evaluation has been carried out on a RADARSAT-2 data set including images at different acquisition modes which was collected in the Mediterranean Sea. Estimates for the detection and the false alarm probability, and the contact position error are provided.

In this paper, we propose a QR-based MIMO detection algorithm and its architecture based on a non-sorted multiple-candidate selection process. The proposed multiple-candidate selection process can mitigate the error propagation problem in the general QR-SIC detection, and therefore the detection probability is increased. This algorithm requires only 24% of the computational complexity of the V-BLAST, which is only slightly larger than that of the conventional QR-SIC algorithm. Besides, the proposed algorithm features high flexibility between the complexity and the performance, and it can even reach the performance of ML detection for the high performance system. Furthermore, the flexible selection approach requires no sorting operation like traditional K-best algorithm. Thus, a simple scalable VLSI architecture can be constructed for different MIMO configurations.

In this paper we present concepts for vectorization of sphere detection algorithms based on regularization of depth first tree search algorithms. Due to data dependant control flow, these tree search algorithms exhibit a highly irregular structure not allowing an efficient collaborative detection of multiple received symbols in parallel. In order to enable parallel symbol processing, a transformation of the irregular tree search algorithm is proposed resulting in a novel regular algorithm structure. Based on this, a concept for a vectorized list sphere detector is introduced, employing a SIMD computational model. In addition to this, limiting effects of vector processing are studied, leading to concepts which ease these effects and enable the utilization of vectorization's benefits.

The detection of defects on steel surfaces is an important quality control step in the manufacturing of steel products. In this study, we developed an algorithm to detect defects such as corner cracks in steel billets through the use of image processing techniques. The surface of a billet is partially covered with scales composed of oxidized substance. Because these scales visually similar to corner cracks, and because the surface features of billet images vary under different lighting conditions, defect detection can be difficult. To minimize the influence of scales and to improve the accuracy of detection, a new detection method based on discrete wavelet transform is proposed. Also, to distinguish corner cracks from pseudo defects, we investigated the morphological features of corner cracks.

This paper proposes two different methods in order to improve the performance of traffic sign detection process. These methods are used for efficient and robust detection of red or blue colored, circular, octagonal, rectangular and triangular traffic signs. Proposed methods use both color and shape features of the traffic signs. Both of the methods gather the color and edge information of the image in order to form a search domain for the shape based detection algorithm. The main difference between the methods appears in the fusion process of color and shape features of the gathered images. Although methods employ different algorithms for color segmentation, they both use HSV color domain. Tests on static images show improvement especially on false positive and detection rate.

We investigate and evaluate the application of the soft information in the detection of cooperative spatial multiplexing (CSM) systems. The destination detects the signals transmitted from the relays with successive interference cancellation (SIC) whose performance suffers from the error propagation. The traditional detection methods assuming that the prior-detected symbols are correct, none of them considers the still existing error propagation. In this paper, we propose a novel soft-information-aided detection algorithm which takes advantage of the log-likelihood ratio (LLR) information of the prior-detected signals. In the proposed algorithm, the interference cancellation and detection ordering both take the error propagation effect into consideration, thus making the detection more reliable. The new algorithm will be performed in the ZF-SIC CSM systems, and the simulation results will show that the new proposed algorithm can achieve better BER performance compared with traditional ones.

The increasing availability of remote-sensing images, acquired periodically by satellite sensors on the same geographical area, makes it extremely interesting to develop monitoring systems capable of automatically producing and regularly updating forest-cover maps of the considered site. In this paper, we designed and developed new object-based change detection algorithms, which are aimed at updating forest-cover maps by remote sensing images. The forest-cover change detection system includes several key modules: image segmentation, difference images processing and binary change detection model using threshold. These modules are evaluated by multi-temporal QuickBird remotely sensed data set: (1) In the image segmentation module, multi-scale segmentation algorithm was used to form the image objects. (2) In the difference image module, spectral value and NDVI (normalized difference vegetation index) were taken as input data. Correlation coefficient and t-test algorithms based on objects are used to develop difference images. (3) In the binary change detection module, change maps obtained from spectral value and NDVI are compared. Finally, experimental results carried out on multi-temporal QuickBird remotely sensed data set confirm the effectiveness of the proposed system.

This paper presents a new approach to soft detection of spatial data streams in multiple input multiple output (MIMO) channels in slow fading channels. We focus on high spectral efficiency bit interleaved coded modulation (BICM) MIMO OFDM system where, after serial to parallel conversion and per antenna coding, spatial data streams are simultaneously transmitted by using an antenna array. We propose a detection algorithm based on a combination of linear and non linear detection techniques. The proposed algorithm orders spatial streams as per V-BLAST ordering and then uses linear detectors like MMSE or zero forcing (ZF) to detect the streams which have seen good channel realizations and therefore enjoy higher signal-to-noise-ratios (SNRs). These streams, after being detected, are subsequently stripped off leading to max log MAP detection of the streams which have seen comparatively poor realizations of the channel and consequently have lower SNRs. Unlike maximum likelihood (ML) detection, whose complexity is huge due to the need for enumerating all possible combinations of the transmitted constellation points, the proposed method has low complexity and moreover has a fully parallel structure suitable for the implementation in parallel hardware. Numerical examples illustrate the performance of proposed algorithm for slow fading 3times3 and 4times4 complex MIMO channels in comparison to linear and max log MAP detection.

An Intelligent Biometrics systems aims at localizing and detecting human faces from supplied images so that further recognition of persons and their facial expression recognition will be easy. Based on facial expression; it is easy to detect intension of person if they are involved in some terror activities or not. This paper presents an automatic, fast and efficient detection of face from an image so that the detected face can be used for facial expression recognition. Images obtained from Sony make digital camera (resolution 7.1 Mega pixel)/Emotion database are considered for our work. Method used includes combination of skin detection algorithms such as modified RGB, YCbCr and HSV and gives better results. Experimental result shows that the algorithm is good to detect and localize human face in an image with better accuracy.
