Impulse ultra-wideband radios (IR-UWB) show strong advantages in low power and low cost applications such as RFIDs and wireless sensor networks. This paper presents an IR-UWB receiver based on energy detection (ED) with on-off keying (OOK) modulation. A novel synchronization and detection algorithm using the energy offset scheme with adaptive threshold detection is suggested, aiming to reduce energy consumption and simplify hardware complexity. Simulation and FPGA implementation reveal that the proposed method can avoid complex and power consuming synchronization blocks, and reduce the preamble length, whereas maintaining the performance in the target level. Hardware integration issues are discussed, implying that the proposed receiver architecture has the possibility to achieve low complexity and low power implementation with several nJs energy per bit, at a data rate of 10 Mb/s.

Millions of hours of valuable audiovisual content is endangered or already destroyed. Today, restoration is mainly done manually, which is time-consuming, costly and thus simply infeasible for large amounts of data. For this reason, automation of restoration efforts is of major importance to win the race against time. In this paper, a framework for efficient drop-out detection and restoration is presented. This artifact class is one of the most frequently occurring in video archives. The proposed detection algorithm is a two-pass approach, where frames of the potentially deteriorated video sequences are classified into valid and suspect based on global color statistics of the images. Suspect pictures are further submitted to local, quad-tree-based analysis for refined evaluations. This yields a subset of identified damaged pictures with accurately localized defects. Detected defective frames are restored using a motion compensation-based approach. Experiments on a data set based on video sequences of the "PrestoSpace" project show very promising results.

The paper develops application of techniques from robust and universal hypothesis testing for anomaly detection and change-point detection in dynamic, interconnected systems. This theory is extended using the concept of projected Markov models originally proposed by Claude Shannon. Also presented is a detailed application to anomaly detection from people movements patterns in buildings.

It is a commonly held belief that IPv6 provides greater security against random scanning worms by virtue of a very sparse address space. As a result, worm authors are looking for new ways to acquire vulnerable targets without relying on random scanning for them. It is possible to find vulnerable Web servers by sending carefully crafted queries to search engines or Domain Name System (DNS) queries to DNS servers. In this paper, we discuss scanning strategies of possible worms in the IPv6 Internet. The performance of the worm depends heavily on these strategies, which in turn depend on how secure directory and naming services of a network are. We present an integrated system for the detection and automatic containment of worm propagation in an IPv6 local area network. The detection engine of our system utilizes the DNS anomalies of the worm traffic. We propose a worm detection algorithm based on user habit of sending DNS queries in an IPv6 Internet. Experiment results show that the algorithm is able to detect worms propagation accurately at its early stage in real-time. Our results bring insight on the future battle against worm attacks.

We propose a principled statistical approach for using 3D information and scene context to reduce the number of false positives in stereo based pedestrian detection. Current pedestrian detection algorithms have focused on improving the discriminability of 2D features that capture the pedestrian appearance, and on using various classifier architectures. However, there has been less focus on exploiting the geometry and spatial context in the scene to improve pedestrian detection performance. We make several contributions: (i) we define a new 3D feature, called a Vertical Support Histogram, from dense stereo range maps to locally characterize 3D structure; (ii) we estimate the likelihoods of these 3D features using kernel density estimation, and use them within a Markov Random Field (MRF) to enforce spatial constraints between the features, and to obtain the Maximum A-Posteriori (MAP) scene labeling; (iii) we employ the MAP scene labelings to reduce the number of candidate windows that are tested by a standard, state-of-the-art pedestrian appearance classifier. We evaluate our algorithm on a very challenging, publicly available stereo dataset and compare the performance with state-of-the-art methods.

This paper proposes a Dempster-Shafer theory (DST)-based iterative detection-decoding scheme in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. On the one hand, the detection algorithm takes advantage of the characteristics of DST processing uncertainty, improving detection performance. On the other hand, during iterations the detection scheme allows for the soft information outputs from the decoder when combining multiple soft information sources, leading to the performance improvement. Moreover, compared with a related DST-based iterative detection scheme, the proposed algorithm has lower complexity, and its detection performance is closer to that of the optimal detection approach. Simulation results demonstrate the validity of the proposed scheme.

It is necessary and important to make the collision detection among the objects or between the object and the scene. If we don't detect collisions, objects will intersect each other or object will intersect the scene. In this paper, we present three algorithms in 2D environment. The objects for collision detection are bounded by the axis-aligned rectangles or circles. The known information such as world coordinate system, collision object coordinate system and collision detection area coordinate system etc. are stored in the data files in advance. The data control systems load those information into the collision detection module to handle the collision among the roles and bullets, We set coordinate values of rectangular center and four vertexes and use the distance from a point to a line to see whether the object's vertexes are enclosed in the other object, if it is true, there is a collision occurring. Alg1. is suitable for the situation where the roles get translational movements, Alg2. is suitable for the situation where the role collide the wall, while Alg3. is suitable for the situation where the roles get rotating or flipping movements, which provides the transition for photography coordinates in 3D environment. The three proposed algorithms have less consuming time.

This paper introduces a new method of electrocardiogram (ECG) R-wave detection algorithm based on LabVIEW. The algorithm adopts the adaptive difference threshold value method for identifying the R-wave, and calculates the heart rate by the R-R interval. It has the advantages of high detection rate, fast processing, and easy completing and transplanting, therefore the researches lay the foundation for the further research on ECG.

We generalize reflection symmetry detection to a curved glide reflection symmetry detection problem. We propose a unifying, local feature based approach for curved glide reflection symmetry detection from real, unsegmented images, where the classic reflection symmetry becomes one of four special cases. Our method detects and groups statistically dominant local reflection axes in a 3D parameter space. A curved glid reflection symmetry axis is estimated by a set of contiguous local straight reflection axes. Experimental results of the proposed algorithm on 40 real world images demonstrate promising performance.

Along with increasing credit cards and growing trade volume in China, credit card fraud rises sharply. How to enhance the detection and prevention of credit card fraud becomes the focus of risk control of banks. This paper proposes a credit card fraud detection model using outlier detection based on distance sum according to the infrequency and unconventionality of fraud in credit card transaction data, applying outlier mining into credit card fraud detection. Experiments show that this model is feasible and accurate in detecting credit card fraud.
