We investigate how system call-based intrusion detectors can be made more resistant against mimicry attacks. We show that by including extra information such as system call arguments, return values, and identity of the user responsible for the calls, the attacker's options of constructing successful attacks are significantly reduced, in particular with respect to the use of no-op system calls. For our investigation, we add extra information to two system call-based detection algorithms-one distance-based and one sequence-based-that normally operate on system call names only. We then create two mimicry attacks which avoid detection by the original detectors but are revealed when the extra information is used. Our investigation shows that by providing the extra information to the detector the attacker's options of constructing successful and undetected attacks decreases drastically.

In this paper we demonstrate a practical approach to interaction detection on real data describing the abundance of different species of birds in the prairies east of the southern Rocky Mountains. This data is very noisy-predictive models built from it perform only slightly better than baseline. Previous approaches for interaction detection, including a recently proposed algorithm based on Additive Groves, often do not work well on such noisy data for a number of reasons. We describe the issues that appear when working with such data sets and suggest solutions to them. In the end, we discuss results of our analysis for several bird species.

Asset tracking is an important application domain for wireless sensor networks. However, continuous tracking of a large number of items at the individual item level over a significant period of time is still not feasible. There are two main obstacles. The first is the need for efficient, low-power communication protocols. Many current protocols employ energy-expensive methods to achieve reliable communication for arbitrary traffic situations. Such protocols are not suitable for continuous asset tracking applications. The second challenge is the lack of a robust presence detection algorithm that can differentiate packet losses caused by a missing item from packet losses caused by the ambient radio environment. In this paper, we designed a simple communication protocol, Uni-HB, and demonstrated it can lead to longer system lifetime and higher communication reliability than several popular protocols. We also devised two robust detection algorithms that can yield low false alarm rates while achieving timely loss notification. We took an experimental approach, and evaluated protocols on a generic embedded hardware platform that has an similar architecture to motes. We also derived analytical models to validate our experimental measurements.

This paper proposes a method of story segmentation for news video using multimodal analysis. The method detects the topic-caption frames, integrates them with silence clips detection, shot segmentation to locate news story boundaries. On test data with 135,400 frames, the accuracy rate 87.9% and the recall rate 98.7% are obtained. The experimental results show the method is promising and robust.

The address non-transparency of NAT (network address translation) device is a great challenge for managing and monitoring the network. Now a lot of problems exist in various detection technologies for obtaining the number of NATed hosts, which can't meet the need of managing and monitoring network. This paper analyzes popular detection technologies for detecting the number of NATed hosts in detail, divides them into active algorithms and passive algorithms, summarizes the advantages and disadvantages of each algorithm, and accordingly puts forward an integrative model and system. At first end users are classified according to user states, then the system makes use of passive algorithms to determine user type, after that utilizes active algorithms to calculate the number of NATed hosts exactly. This detection system has good scalability and hierarchy and can makes a new detection algorithm integrated easily, moreover it improves the accuracy of detection and avoids normal user experience to be interrupted.

Inspection planning plays one of important roles in examining a manufactured part in 3D sizes, positions and forms using coordinate measuring machine (CMM). Accessibility analysis must be done during CMM inspection planning. Usually, accessibility analysis is based on the computation of a part's computer-aided design (CAD) model and the model of a probe. In this paper, a new accessibility analysis method for CMM inspection planning is proposed based on a haptic device and STL representation. Different collision modes are analyzed. A quick collision detection algorithm is given, which is based on the STL representation. Force response is analyzed to distinguish between an occurred collision and a normal contacting of the tip to an inspection point. Using STL representation, the virtual CMM probe unit model is more precise, which results in the accessibility analysis implemented precisely. With the force feedback generated by a phantom desktop haptic device, the accessibility analysis is performed much easier.

Long time digital data recordings in portable devices have become possible today with widespread usage of high capacity memories. The aim of this study is to obtain a better performance in the sleep apnea analysis by recording portable EKG recording systems as well as different clinically significant signals on flash cards for a long time. Thus in the first stage a Holter recorder device is designed to record ECG and respiratory signals for the diagnostic of apnea. The device is designed to handle more than two channels simultaneously. In the second phase of the study, an apnea detection algorithm using Hilbert transform was chosen and implemented as an example among other algorithms using only ECG signals. Based on the comparison of three selected algorithms (digital filter based, differentiation based and higher order statistics based) to be used for the QRS detection for any apnea detection algorithm, differentiation based algorithm is preferred due to its better performance.

In this paper, performance analysis of the decision directed (DD) maximum likelihood (ML) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel tracking algorithm is presented. The ML channel tracking algorithm presents efficient performance especially in the DD mode of the operation. Because of the nonlinear decision device, analysis of the DD based algorithms is very difficult. In this paper, first the decision error rate is computed for the known channel tracking error and then the channel tracking error is evaluated for the known decision error rate. The presented analysis is compared with the simulation results for different Doppler frequency shifts and SNRs, and it is shown that the analysis and simulation results are in a good match even for high rank MIMO channels and high Doppler shifts.

The effect of sample-timing error on the bit-error-rate (BER) performance of the interleave-division multiple access (IDMA) systems are studied in this paper. We construct an asynchronous IDMA system model to investigate the effect of sample-timing error caused by the asynchronous transmission from different user ends (UEs) on the BER performance. The theoretic analysis shows that sample-timing error can introduce both inter-symbol interference (ISI) and multiple access interference (MAI) into the traditional detection algorithm to degrade the system performance greatly. And the simulation results prove the same conclusion. Therefore, the traditional IDMA receiver at the base station (BS) must be modified to mitigate the effect of sample-timing error. The analysis model and simulation results provided in this paper can be used as a reference for the practical system designs.

Thermography, or thermal visualization is a type of infrared visualization. Thermographic cameras are used in many heavy factories like metal recycling factories, wafer production factories and etc for monitoring the temperature conditions of the machines. Besides, thermographic camera can be used to detect trespassers in environment with poor lighting condition, whereby, the conventional digital cameras are less applicable in. In this paper, we proposed two simple and fast detection algorithms into a cost effective thermal imaging surveillance system. This surveillance system not only used in monitoring the functioning of different machinery and electrical equipments in a factory site, it can also used for detecting the trespassers in poor lighting condition. Experimental results show that the proposed surveillance system achieves high accuracy in monitoring machines conditions and detecting trespassers.
