Automated blotch removal is important in film restoration and typically involves a detection/interpolation step. Current algorithms model the corruption as a binary mixture between the original, clean images and an opaque (dirt) field. This typically causes incomplete blotch removal that manifests as blotch haloes in reconstruction. This paper proposes a new approach by modeling the corruption as a continuous mixture between the two components and generating a solution using a Bayesian framework. We use novel priors, propose a computationally efficient scheme for implementation and our results show more complete blotch reconstruction.

The performance of an iterative decoding and noncoherent demodulating algorithm to suppress the multi-tone jamming (MTJ) in FH-CPM systems is studied in this paper. To reduce the complexity of the demodulator, an iterative tree search (ITS) method, based on Laurent decomposition, is exploited. And to enhance the reliability of the system, an iterative multi-tone jamming state information (MTJSI) estimation method is proposed in this paper. Simulation results demonstrate that the iterative detection algorithm combining with the MTJSI estimation method takes on good BER performance in the presence of MTJ on an additive white Gaussian noise channel.

This paper presents an efficient and scalable framework called Reliable and Energy Efficient Framework (REEF) for reliable data collection in Wireless Sensor Networks. REEF employs a distributed scheme which enables it to scale to large networks. It partitions the network in to clusters where the node with highest residual energy in a neighborhood become the cluster head. REEF forms a virtual backbone connecting the cluster heads and the sink by selecting some nodes from each cluster as gateway nodes. Sensor nodes report sensed data to their respective cluster heads which use an outlier detection algorithm to detect faulty data. REEF significantly cuts down on energy consumption by ensuring that a large number of sensor nodes can go into a deep sleep mode, in which the radio as well as CPU are switched off, for a major part of their life time. Simulation results demonstrate that REEF uses as low as 50% of the energy for the same accuracy when compared to a recently proposed scheme based on passive listening.

Recent years HOG algorithm has been used to recognize objects in images, with complex content, with a very high success rate. Hardware implementation of this algorithm is very important because of the fact that it can be used in many object recognition applications. In this work HOG algorithm is implemented on FPGA to recognize different geometrical figures with a very high success rate. Objects vertical and horizontal edges have been sharpened using edge detection algorithms to calculate magnitude and angle of the local gradients. Obtained result are used to construct the histograms of gradient orientation. It is observed that each constructed histogram have distinctive features for every object. Rule based classifiers has been used to implement a successful real time object recognition approach on embedded system.

We propose and analyze a generalized spatial modulation scheme, where depending on the bits to be transmitted a certain data symbol as well as a certain beamforming vector is chosen. The receiver then has to estimate both the used beamforming vector and the transmitted data symbol for being able to reconstruct the originally transmitted bit sequence. We analyze our scheme theoretically by deriving a very tight upper bound on the average bit error rate (BER) for arbitrary symbol constellations and beamforming codebooks in correlated Rayleigh fading channels. Based on this bound, we determine a design criterion for optimizing the used beamforming codebook in presence of spatial correlation at the transmitter-side. Simulation results are shown to be in excellent agreement with our analytical calculated BERs and they illustrate the significant performance gains that can be obtained with our generalized scheme compared to conventional spatial modulation.

This article deals with the detection and tracking of pedestrians by means of a laser sensor. This sensor placed on the front of a vehicle collects information about distance distributed according to 4 laser planes. Like a vehicle, a pedestrian constitutes in urban environment an obstacle which must be detected, located, then identified and tracked if necessary. In order to improve the robustness of pedestrian detection using a single laser sensor we use a detection system based on the fusion of information located in the 4 laser planes. A ldquoParzen Windowrdquo kernel method is described and allows the centralized fusion of different planes. Finally to improve our pedestrian detection algorithm we use a particle filter with feedback in laser image allowing a closer observation of pedestrian random movement dynamics. Many experimental results validate and show the relevance of our algorithm in regard to proposed method.

We propose a dynamic activity classification system with tri-axial accelerometer sensor using adaptation of user's postural orientation. In general, the sensor module is worn at a fixed position such as waist, head, wrist, thigh, and so on. However, in reality, the tilt of the attached sensor could be changed from time to time in actions such as sitting down, standing up, lying, walking or running. Moreover, most of the users want to wear the sensor at their own favorite positions instead of a recommended position. In these cases, the activity detection methods based on fixed tilt value may produce serious problem in their performance. Therefore, we propose a user adapted activity classification method which enables users to freely wear the sensor everywhere on their torso. In order to decide tilt values corresponding user's postural orientation, we focused on tilt-free activities such as walking and running. While walking, the algorithm tries to modify the predefined reference tilt values for the three axes, X, Y and Z. From an experiment, we have achieved 88% of the activity classification accuracy even though the tilt angle is changed while wearing sensors.

In this paper, mobile lane departure warning systems (M-LDWS) are addressed. The proposed lane departure warning (LDW) detection algorithm has been successfully implemented on handheld devices with their build-in cameras. The users as long as download LDW program to their own mobile phones and the driving safety service will be enabled. M-LDWS is settled behind the windshield and the driver will be alerted when his car departs from the host lane. M-LDWS detects lane boundaries ahead the host vehicle and estimates the position within the host lane by the captured real-time image. It is qualified to be applied on highways, expressways and urban roadways in Taiwan. It also has been successfully verified in sunny, cloudy and rainy conditions for day and night. M-LDWS will be a novel killer application in consumer devices for driving assistance systems.

Nowadays, blogs have become a popular way for people and organizations to publish news and information to the public, as well as advertise their products. Certain information contained in the blogs represent business opportunities and thus can be utilized by speculators. However, many blogs may often contain similar information and the sheer volume of available information really challenges the ability of organizations to act quickly in today's business environment. Thus, a lot of work has been done to develop a novelty detection system, which is able to single out novel information out of a set of massive text documents. This paper explores the feasibility and performance of detecting novel business blogs, which has not been studied before. The results show that our novelty detection system can detect novelty in our dataset of business blogs with very high accuracy, which indicate that our novelty detection algorithm is successful in detecting novel business blogs.

In this paper, a new local algorithm of community detection which requires mostly local information while detecting communities in networks is proposed. The algorithm is available in both unweighted and weighted networks. It starts from vertices with low intensity and extracts communities from networks. Three real-world networks are used to test the performance of algorithm proposed, the experimental results demonstrate that it can extract communities from a given network efficiently and accurately.
