During the process of the recognizing two-dimensional bar code, the two-dimensional bar can be corrected further only after accurately positing bar code in original image. In this paper, in case of the two-dimensional bar data matrix, the concept of convex hull in computational geometry is used to locate bar code in the paper. The vertices in convex hulls are selected from the list of pixels in order to reduce the number of the pixel processed. At the same time, the positioning graphics features of data matrix is set as selecting conditions in order to get the vertices in convex hulls in the area of positioning two-dimensional bar code finally. This algorithm overcomes the shortcomings of traditional straight-line detection algorithm as a result of the overall detection and the need to a large number of memory space. The experimental results show that the algorithm can position the area of distorted or tilted two-dimensional bar code effectively. It can reduce accurate positioning time.

The prevention of Spam over IP telephony (SPIT) is one of the greatest challenges for future large-scale deployments of VoIP telephony solutions. Some useful information for detecting SPIT calls is only available at the caller's VoIP provider. Recent approaches therefore suggest the signalling of such information among providers. However, there is currently no way for a receiving provider to assess the trustwortiness or the semantics of SPIT-related information received. Our approach tackles this problem by applying a provider-level reputation system, based on SPIT tags assigned to outgoing SIP messages by the caller's provider. The system provides an incentive to tag outgoing calls correctly, and it translates tags with arbitrary semantics into meaningful SPIT probabilities. We show analytically that our system significantly improves the receiving provider's assessment of SPIT tags.

No-reference measurement of blurring artifacts in images is a challenging problem in image quality assessment field. One of the difficulties is that the inherently blurry regions in some natural images may disturb the evaluation of blurring artifacts. In this paper, we study the image gradients along local image structures and propose a new perceptual blur metric to deal with the above problem. The gradient profile sharpness of image edge is efficiently calculated along horizontal or vertical direction. Then the sharpness distribution histogram rectified by just noticeable distortion (JND) threshold is used to evaluate the blurring artifacts and assess the image quality. Experimental results show that the proposed method can achieve good image quality prediction performance.

The election paradigm can be used as a building block in many practical problems such as group communication, atomic commit and replicated data management where a protocol coordinator might be useful. The problem has been widely studied in the research community since one reason for this wide interest is that many distributed protocols need an election protocol. However, despite its usefulness, to our knowledge there is no work that has been devoted to this problem in a mobile ad hoc computing environment. Mobile ad hoc systems are more prone to failures than conventional distributed systems. Solving election in such an environment requires from a set of mobile nodes to choose a unique node as a leader based on its priority despite failures or disconnections of mobile nodes. In this paper, we describe a solution to the election problem from mobile ad hoc computing systems. This solution is based on the group membership detection algorithm.

Structured motifs consist of two simpler patterns (half-sites) separated from each other by a gap, with no restriction on the nucleotides that may occur within the gap. This paper proposes a new algorithm to identify structured motifs. First, a simpler motif searching algorithm is used to search for half-sites. Candidate structured motif models are then evaluated, based on the relative frequency of occurrence of half-sites (not attributable to randomness), and the distribution of gap length. Unlike other recent structured motif detection algorithms, the new algorithm does not require the gap length to be prespecified.

A multimodal information transformation system is proposed in this paper to provide sight impaired people with scene information of walking areas and obstacles. The scene information is first acquired as images using a single CCD camera, and then image information is transformed into voice information so that sight impaired people can obtain by hearing instead of seeing. During scene image processing period, the walking area is extracted by the vanishing point and boundary of a sidewalk on edge image using a chain-code line detection algorithm. And obstacles are detected by applying Gabor filter to the vertical lines extracted from the walking area on image. Later, based on the above image information, voice information is constructed in the form of pre-defined sentences by combining a set of template words that represent walking areas, obstacles, directions and distances. With the help of voice instructions provided by this multi-modal information transformation system, sight impaired people are able to reach their destinations safely and conveniently. The proposed algorithm has been implemented and tested in both indoor and outdoor environment, and its superiority in providing exact walking instructions has been verified.

This paper presents defect detection and classification method for hot wire rod in the steel industry. The detection algorithm is based on undecimated discrete wavelet transform (UDWT). The algorithm utilizes the translation invariant property of UDWT. To discriminate the real defects and pseudo defects, we use support vector machine (SVM). The total 14 feature attributes are extracted from binary and gray image. To select best model for SVM classier, we search the parameter spaces by exponentially growing sampling test. The experimental results show the proposed methods can be applied to real-world application.

This paper presents methodologies involved in diphone preparation for Bangla text to speech synthesis. A concatenation based synthesis system comprises basically two modules- one is natural language processing and other is digital signal processing (DSP). Natural language processing implies converting text to its pronounceable text, called text normalization and the diphone selection method based on the normalized text is called Graphene to Phoneme (G2P) conversion. We developed a speech synthesizer for Bangla using diphone based concatenative approach. Diphone preparation, labeling and selection techniques are described in this paper.

Light detection and ranging (Lidar) instruments collect high density and accurate three dimensional (3D) point clouds of scanned surfaces of objects. 3D building modelling from terrestrial Lidar requires the raw point cloud data to be processed. Through processing, noise and outliers are eliminated from the point cloud, and a 3D photo-realistic model is generated using image data. This effectively reduces redundant data and enhances the visual representation. This paper deals with point cloud processing and proposes methods to automate several of the processing procedures. Specifically, we implemented automatic 3D point cloud registration, automatic target recognition used for geo-referencing, automatic plane detection algorithm used for surface modelling, and texture mapping. The proposed approach leads to the generation of accurately geo-referenced three dimensional (3D) photo-realistic models from point clouds and digital imagery.

We consider the problem of ranging with impulse radio (IR) ultra-wideband (UWB) radio under dense multipaths propagation environments and additive Gaussian noise. We propose a Bayesian detection algorithm where the prior distribution of the channel follows the IEEE 802.15.4a channel model, to identify whether the received signal is a Line-of-Sight (LOS) signal or a Non-Line-of-Sight (NLOS) signal. If it is a LOS signal, we use a Bayesian estimation approach to estimate the joint posterior probability density function (pdf) of the channel and the targeted distance. One of applications of the joint posterior pdf of the channel and the targeted distance is the ranging determination with classical posterior estimators (such as Minimum Mean Square Error Estimator (MMSE)). For computing the joint posterior pdf of the channel and the targeted distance, we derived a novel algorithm which is based on importance sampling and expectation maximum techniques. Numerical evaluations under the IEEE 802.15.4a channel model are presented to demonstrate the good performance of the proposed algorithms.
