A core concept of universal multimedia access is the use of scalable content. The scalable content should be as flexible as possible to achieve the credo of creating the content once and adapting it to fulfill given requirements. As far as flexibility goes wavelet based codecs are superior. A problem which arises is that the adaptation does not necessarily happen on a device which is aware of the codec which was used in content creation. To rectify this non-awareness, MPEG-21 introduced digital item adaptation in part 7 to abstract the bitstream of a given video. This allows in-network adaptation on nodes which are DIA aware to adapt any video stream as long as a DIA description is given. The drawback is that the DIA description must be sent parallel to the original video sequence. In this paper we will look at how a DIA description for a t+2D scalable wavelet codec looks like. We will evaluate the possibilities we have with various description options and we will also look at the overhead generated by the DIA description.

Aiming at the growing problem of network congestion, an improved random early detection algorithm is proposed for the internal network and applied on a TCP congestion control algorithm based on partition of network segment. By using known network information and network topology information, the method is more effective, and better results are achieved.

Proxy mobile IPv6 (PMIPv6), a network-based IP mobility solution, is a promising approach for mobility management in all-IP wireless networks. How to enhance its handoff-related performance, such as handoff delay and signaling cost, is an important issue. Current solutions rely on approaches such as fast handoff, routing optimization and paging extension. However, the case of many correlated mobile nodes (MNs) moving together and taking handoffs at the same time has not been considered. In this paper, we propose a group-based handoff scheme for correlated MNs to enhance the performance of PMIPv6. We first propose a correlated MNs detection algorithm to detect MNs as groups. Based on this algorithm, we propose a group-based handoff procedure, and discuss its benefits and limitations. Furthermore, we evaluate the performance of PMIPv6 and our proposal through the analysis and simulation. The results show that the proposed scheme is very efficient in reducing both the handoff delay and signaling cost.

This paper presents an approach to extract building region in an image with complex scene. The algorithm highlights the edge characteristics of the target in image pre-processing step, uses the improved Hough transform line detection algorithm and the line optimization algorithm to keep the effective straight-line segments. Then it clusters the dominant hues of each effective segment's surrounding area, which will be made statistical analysis to group the straight-lines with building hue and keep the building lines with consistent hue. Finally, the building region is gotten in original image by the effective lines. Our experiments on dozens of pictures by this method and two other building extraction methods, demonstrate that this method is not only good for extracting the covered buildings in complex scene images, but also good for locating the buildings submerged in the background accurately.

Provisioning of mobile audio and video services is a difficult challenge since in the mobile environment, bandwidth and processing resources are limited. Audio content is normally present in most multimedia services, however, the user expectation of perceived audio quality differs for speech and nonspeech content. Therefore, automatic voice or speech detection is needed in order to maximize perceived audio quality and reduce bandwidth and processing costs. The aim of this work is to find a low-complexity speech detector, suitable for detection of speech in a highly-compressed multimedia stream whose audio track may consist of speech, music, broadcast news, or other audio content. Finally, two methods for speech/non-speech detection are proposed and compared.

Eigenvalue-based detection is one of the most promising techniques proposed for spectrum sensing in cognitive radio as it is insensitive to the noise uncertainty problem. However, the eigenvalue-based detection schemes presented so far rely on asymptotic assumptions that are not suitable for many realistic scenarios, thus determining a substantial degradation of detection performance. In this paper, starting from the analytical distribution of the ordered eigenvalues of finite-dimension Wishart matrices, we derive an exact expression for the decision threshold as a function of the probability of false alarm. Since it is not based on asymptotical assumptions, the novel decision rule is valid for any, even small, number of samples and cooperating receivers. In addition to the exact expression, an alternative (approximated) formula is then derived to reduce the computational complexity. Simulation results show that the proposed detector, both with the exact and the approximated formula, outperforms the other existing eigenvalue-based techniques, especially when the receiver operates under non-asymptotical conditions.

Visual localization and mapping for mobile robots has been achieved with a large variety of methods. Among them, topological navigation using vision has the advantage of offering a scalable representation, and of relying on a common and affordable sensor. In previous work, we developed such an incremental and real-time topological mapping and localization solution, without using any metrical information, and by relying on a Bayesian visual loop-closure detection algorithm. In this paper, we propose an extension of this work by integrating metrical information from robot odometry in the topological map, so as to obtain a globally consistent environment model. Also, we demonstrate the performance of our system on the global localization task, where the robot has to determine its position in a map acquired beforehand.

Tracking multiple objects has always been a challenge, and is a crucial problem in the field of driving assistance systems. The particle filter-based trackers have the theoretical possibility of tracking multiple hypotheses, but in practice the particles will cluster around the stronger one. This paper proposes a two-level approach to the multiple object tracking problem. One particle filter-based tracker will search the whole state space for new hypotheses, and when a hypothesis becomes strong enough, it will be passed to an individual object tracker, which will track it until the object is lost. The initialization tracker and the individual object trackers use the same state models and the same measurement technique, based on stereovision-generated elevation maps, and differ only in their use of the estimation results. The proposed solution is a simple and robust one, adaptable to different types of object models and to different types of sensors.

In this paper we derive the symbol error rate (SER) of the vertical Bell laboratories layered space-time (V-BLAST) detection algorithm based on zero-forcing successive interference cancellation (ZF-SIC) over an independent and identically distributed Rayleigh flat fading channel. By introducing the concepts of "event" and "state" related to error propagation, we evaluate the effect of error propagation and calculate the exact SER of each layer in a simple way. Compared with the pre-existing results, our approach can offer the closed-form expression of the SER of arbitrary quadrature-amplitude modulation (QAM) for an arbitrary number of transmit and receiver antennas. Furthermore, our analysis matches very well with Monte Carlo simulation results.
