Many powerful data detection algorithms employed in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems, such as sphere decoding (SD) and lattice-reduction (LR)-aided detection, were initially designed for infinite lattices. detection in MIMO systems is, however, based on finite lattices. In this paper, we systematically study the consequences of finite lattice-size for the performance and complexity of MIMO detection algorithms formulated for infinite lattices. Specifically, we find, considering performance and complexity, that LR does not seem to offer advantages when used in conjunction with SD.

In this paper, features of various collision detection algorithms for standard 3D objects among 3D graphic algorithms were analyzed, and a 'Classified dynamic density (CDD)' that utilizes the center value and corner points of standard objects in represent hierarchical structures is suggested. By using CDD, an Level-of-Detail(LOD) algorithm can be applied to 3D space to improve collision detection of 3D objects. Also, through suggesting efficient rendering of 3D spaces as an important element of 3D graphics and a realistic expression method, the realism and efficiency of 3D games can be greatly improved.

The RX anomaly detection algorithm is a statistical method for detecting pixels in hyperspectral imagery that are significantly different from the other pixels in their locale. The RX algorithm is based upon the assumption of an existing uniform discrete sampling in both space and spectrum. In this report, we give consideration to extending the RX algorithm to continuous spatial and spectral domains so that future optical devices may be optimally constructed for anomaly detection. This report gives a heuristic outline for the extension of the RX algorithm to continuous spatial and spectral domains, explores new concepts in functional statistics necessary to make the algorithm rigorous, and suggests directions for the continuation of this research in the future.

In this paper a new nonlinear joint fusion and detection algorithm is proposed for locating anomalies from two different types of sensor data (synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and hyperspectral sensor (HS) data). The proposed approach jointly exploits the nonlinear correlation or dependencies between the two sensors in order to simultaneously fuse and detect the objects of interest (mines). A well-known anomaly detector, so called RX algorithm is extended to perform fusion and detection simultaneously at the pixel level by appropriately concatenating the information from the two sensors. This approach is then extended to its nonlinear version using the idea of kernel learning which explicitly exploits the higher order dependencies (nonlinear correlations) between the two sensor data through an appropriate kernel.

Falls in the elderly are a major problem for society. A serious consequence of falling is the "long-lie". A fall detection system and algorithm, incorporated into a custom designed garment has been developed which will automatically detect falls and potentially reduce the incidence of the "long-lie". The developed fall detection system consists of a tri-axial accelerometer, microcontroller, battery and Bluetooth module. This sensor is attached to a custom designed vest, designed to be worn by the elderly person under clothing. The fall detection algorithm was developed and incorporates both impact and posture detection capability. The vest was developed using feedback from elderly subjects donning, wearing and doffing a prototype vests and subsequently filling in a questionnaire. The re-designed vest and fall algorithm was tested in two clinical trials. Trial 1: young healthy subjects performing normal activities of daily living (ADL) and falls onto crash mats, while wearing the vest and sensor. Trial 2: The system was subsequently tested using 10 elderly subjects wearing the system over the course of 4 weeks, for 8 hours a day. Two teams of 5 elderly subjects wore the sensor system in turn for 2 week each. Results from trial 1, show that falls can be distinguished from normal activities with a sensitivity >90% and a specificity of >99%, from a total data set of 264 falls and 165 normal ADL. In trial 2, over 833 hours of monitoring was performed over the course of the four weeks from the elderly subjects, during normal daily activity. In this time no actual falls were recorded, however the system registered a total of the 42 fall-alerts. Further development of the system will include a more accurate fall-detection algorithm, more comfortable sensor attachment method, lighter and smaller sensor as well as, mobility monitoring and energy expenditure measurement. Doors are important landmarks for indoor mobile robot navigation. Most existing algorithms for door detection use range sensors or work in limited environments because of restricted assumptions about color, pose, or lighting. We present a vision-based door detection algorithm that achieves robustness by utilizing a variety of features, including color, texture, and intensity edges. We introduce two novel geometric features that increase performance significantly: concavity and bottom-edge intensity profile. The features are combined using Adaboost to ensure optimal linear weighting. On a large database of images collected in a wide variety of conditions, the algorithm achieves more than 90% detection with a low false positive rate. Additional experiments demonstrate the suitability of the algorithm for real-time applications using a mobile robot equipped with an off-the-shelf camera and laptop.

A MIMO decoding algorithm utilizing poly- diagonalization and tail-biting trellis is proposed. Linear MIMO decoding, such as zero-forcing equalization, is a channel diagonalization technique, where all interferences from other data streams are suppressed for separate decoding. It is well known, however, that such decoders suffer from the noise enhancement. In the proposed scheme, interferences are partially allowed, in order to alleviate the noise enhancement and, then, post trellis decoding is used for the joint detection utilizing the poly-diagonal structure of the effective channel. Under the proposed framework, the zero-forcing equalizer can be regarded as special cases of poly-diagonalization, i.e., of the first order. And the proposed scheme can provide a tradeoff between the complexity and performance by choosing an appropriate order of poly-diagonalization. According to the simulation results, considerable gain can be obtained even with the second order, i.e., bi-diagonalization, for which the decoding complexity is far less than that of the maximum likelihood decoding.

This paper presents a new approach for accurate detection of voiced onsets in a speech signal. The knowledge of the precise location of the beginning of a voiced segment has several potential applications in speech compression (e.g. source-controlled variable bitrate coding, classification-based frame erasure concealment). The proposed onset detection algorithm is based on Teager's energy operator applied on sub-bands. The technique has been integrated in the signal classifier of the VMR-WB speech coding standard used for frame erasure (FE) concealment. A subjective listening test using MUSHRA methodology showed an improvement in frame error conditions with respect to the legacy VMR-WB classification.

In this paper, we propose a novel method for eye states detection. The detection of eye states is treated as an appearance based binary classification problem. The whole eye region is first scanned by a series of blocks with various locations and scales. The Local Binary Pattern Histogram (LBPH) is then extracted from each block to form a descriptor of the local texture. A reference template for each block is later calculated as the optimal histogram which makes the distances between it and the LBPHs of different clusters most separable. For all the blocks, the bin-wise distances between local LBPHs and the corresponding reference templates are then extracted to form a feature set for classification. A cascaded AdaBoost learning is further employed to select most discriminative features from the whole feature set and to accelerate the classification. Experimental results demonstrate that our eye states detection algorithm and can give correct and robust detection results in real-time.

This paper presents a robust real-time algorithm to automatically detect and accurately locate ellipse objects in digital images. The algorithm consists of three steps. First the edge pixels are extracted using Canny edge detection algorithm and then a noise removal process is run to remove the non-ellipse edgepoints. In the second step, a direct least-square-fitting algorithm is used to calculate the ellipse parameters from each cluster of pixels. In the third step, a robust criterion is developed to identify valid ellipses. The algorithm is implemented in Visual C++ and tested on a laptop powered by an Intel Centrino Duo CPU at 1.8 GHz. The preliminary experiment shows the algorithmpsilas speed is 212 ms/images on average for image size of 640X480.
