The effects of network attacks may result in abrupt changes in network traffic parameters. The speedy identification of these changes is critical for smooth network operation. This paper illustrates a sequential analysis technique for detecting these unknown abrupt changes in asymmetric network traffic. A novel sliding window based adaptive cumulative sum (CUSUM) algorithm is used to detect the cause of such variations in network traffic. The significance of the proposed algorithm is two-fold: (1) automatic adjustment of the change detection threshold while minimising the false alarm rate, and (2) timely detection of an end to the anomalous traffic. The validity of the proposed technique is investigated by experimentation on simulated data and on 18 months of real network traces collected from a class C darknet. Comparative analysis of the proposed technique with a traditional CUSUM method demonstrates its superior performance with high detection accuracy and low false alarm rate.

This paper proposed an adaptive shadows detection algorithm based on Gaussian Mixture Model to improve the performance of video object segmentation. This method takes advantage of luminance weight to model the background of the image and obtains a primary segmentation in CIE Luv color space. In this way, it improves the real-time ability of detection. It also becomes more efficient, comparing with the existing shadow detection algorithms which often need to set the threshold manually or get them through a training process. By using the Gaussian distribution, it is able to realize an adaptive shadow detection. At same time, the authors deal with the noise or the aim points uneven distribution by using horizontal filling and vertical filling. It improves the accuracy of segmentation. The experimental results have shown that this method achieves adaptive shadows detection and has strong robustness, high segmentation accuracy.

The evolutional development of dynamic HTML techniques empowers attackers a new and powerful tool to compromise machines. A malicious DHTML code disguises itself as a normal Webpage. The malicious Webpage infects the victim when a user browses it. Furthermore, such DHTML code can disguise easily through obfuscation or transformation, which makes detection even harder. Anti-virus software packages commonly use signature-based approaches which might not be able to efficiently identify camouflage malicious HTML code. In this paper, we propose a novel semantics-aware reasoning detection algorithm (SeAR) using the techniques of semantic modeling and memory-based reasoning for malicious Webpage detection. SeAR is resilient to code obfuscations and is able to detect malicious Webpage correctly. The experiments demonstrate that our detection algorithm can effectively detect variants of malicious HTML code with a low false rate.

It is not surprising that the process of change detection is fundamental to many machine vision applications. Most change detection algorithms assume that the illumination on a scene will remain constant. Unfortunately, this assumption is not necessarily valid outside a well-controlled laboratory setting. The accuracy of existing algorithms decreases significantly when faced up with image sequences in which the illumination is allowed to vary. In this paper an unsupervised change detection algorithm has been proposed, it performs the change detection without any additional information besides the raw images considered. It performs well under time-varying illumination conditions, where other algorithms fail to perform.

In this paper we propose a scalable failure detection service for large scale ad hoc networks using an efficient cluster based communication architecture. Our failure detection service adapts the detection parameter to the current load of the wireless ad hoc network. The proposed approach uses a heartbeat based testing mechanism to detect failure in each cluster and take the advantage of cluster based architecture to forward the failure report to other cluster and their respective members. The simulation results show that this approach is linearly scalable in terms of message complexity and consensus time.

This paper proposes a novel method to address the problem of estimating the number of people in surveillance scenes with people gathering and waiting. The proposed method combines a MID (mosaic image difference) based foreground segmentation algorithm and a HOG (histograms of oriented gradients) based head-shoulder detection algorithm to provide an accurate estimation of people counts in the observed area. In our framework, the MID-based foreground segmentation module provides active areas for the head-shoulder detection module to detect heads and count the number of people. Numerous experiments are conducted and convincing results demonstrate the effectiveness of our method.

This paper presents a novel human detection method based on a Bayesian fusion approach using laser range data and camera images. Laser range data analysis groups data points with a novel graph cutting method. Therefore, it computes a belief to each cluster based on the evaluation of multidimensional features that describe geometrical properties. A person detection algorithm based on dense overlapping grid of Histograms of Oriented Gradients (HOG) is processed on the image area determined by each laser cluster. The selection of HOG features and laser features is obtained through a learning process based on a cascade of linear Support Vector Machines (SVM). A technique to obtain conditional probabilities from a cascade of SVMs is here proposed in order to combine the two information together. The resulting human detection consists in a rich information that takes into account the distance of the cluster and the confidence level of both detection methods. We demonstrate the performance of this work on real-world data and different environments.

The QR decomposition (QRD) is an important prerequisite for many different detection algorithms in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communication systems. This paper presents an optimized fixed-point VLSI implementation of the modified Gram-Schmidt (MGS) QRD algorithm that incorporates regularization and additional sorting of the MIMO channel matrix. Integrated in 0.18 mum CMOS technology, the proposed VLSI architecture processes up to 1.56 million complex-valued 4times4-dimensional matrices per second. The implementation results of this work are extensively compared to the Givens rotation (GR)-based QRD implementation of Luethi et al., ISCAS 2007. In order to ensure a fair comparison, both QRD circuits have been integrated in the same IC manufacturing technology, with equal functionality, and the same numeric precision. The comparison of the implementation results clearly showed superiority of the GR-based VLSI solution in terms of area, processing cycles, and throughput.

The uncertain exogenous disturbance torque of power window is estimated using the sliding mode estimator in this paper. Then the characteristic of the friction torque is determined by experiment, and based on spectrum analysis of friction torque, the method of separating the friction torque from exogenous disturbance torque estimated is addressed. Further the pinch detection algorithm is presented. Experiment results show that pinch detection algorithm in this paper is effective.

Shot segmentation provides the basis for almost all high-level video content analysis approaches, validating it as one of the major prerequisites for efficient video semantic analysis, indexing and retrieval. The successful detection of both gradual and abrupt transitions is necessary to this end. In this paper a new gradual transition detection algorithm is proposed, that is based on novel criteria such as color coherence change that exhibit less sensitivity to local or global motion than previously proposed ones. These criteria, each of which could serve as a standalone gradual transition detection approach, are then combined using a machine learning technique, to result in a meta-segmentation scheme. Besides significantly improved performance, advantage of the proposed scheme is that there is no need for threshold selection, as opposed to what would be the case if any of the proposed features were used by themselves and as is typically the case in the relevant literature. Performance evaluation and comparison with four other popular algorithms reveals the effectiveness of the proposed technique.
