The exact-repair regenerating codes for distributed storage system are studied in this work. A novel coding scheme is proposed for code construction for any (n, k, d = k) system. It is shown that the proposed codes are optimum, in the sense that any operating point satisfying the lower bound for the storage-bandwidth trade-off can be achieved with the proposed construction. As a consequence, the optimum linear trade-off of exact-regenerating system is fully characterized for any systems with d = k. The proposed codes are linear, and can be generated by multiplication of an encoder matrix with a so-called data matrix. The exact regenerating property is provided based on fundamental properties of matrix determinants, and in particular, generalized Laplace expansion for determinant. Thus the code is called determinant code. Importantly, the field size required for this code construction is Theta(n), the total number of nodes in the system.

Distribution affects company cost and customer satisfaction. Distribution network design is a strategic concern for nearly all companies, and must be periodically reviewed to ensure fitness to today's rapidly changing business environment. Unlike most of previous research, this paper investigates a highly complicated and realistic distribution network, and develops a multi-objective model to achieve an effective redesign solution. Reconfiguring cost, service differentiation, multiple products, and optional capacity levels are simultaneously considered. A determinant code-based encoding structure is designed to represent the complicated multi-objective optimization problem, and a genetic algorithm (GA)-based procedure is developed as a solution. The paper provides an application example using actual data. Finally, a comparison between the empirical results and those of the Prufer-based GA demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed GA.

Logistics network design is a strategic issue for nearly all companies. In the past, a logistics network once established was used for several periods. However, recent years have seen a rapidly changing economic environment. Trends in markets, shifts of customer clusters, changes of cost structures, and increasing competition are some of the aspects compelling companies to periodically redesign their logistics networks. In this paper, a complicated logistics network redesign problem is studied. To ensure the service levels of the important customers and products, weighting factors are employed, and a new service level measurement based on differentiation is proposed. Then a multi-objective model is formulated to redesign the complicated logistics network, and the NSGAII based solution procedure with determinant-code encoding structure is developed to achieve the Pareto solutions. The applicability of the proposed approach is demonstrated with the help of a real world case study from a Chinese automobile enterprise.
