Energy consumption is one of the most critical issues in wireless sensor network (WSN). For a sensor device, transmission of data is considered as the most energy consuming task, and it mostly depends on the size of the data. Fortunately, data compression can be used to minimise the transmitted data size and thus extend sensor's lifetime. In this paper, we propose a new lossless compression algorithm that can handle small data communication in WSNs. Using compression ratio, memory usage, number of instructions and execution speed as a comparison parameters, the proposed algorithm is measured against a set of existing algorithms. Two different datasets have been used for this purpose;namely, self-generated dataset and real sensor dataset from Harvard Sensor Library. As a result, the proposed algorithm not only outclasses other existing algorithms but most importantly produces positive compression ratio throughout the whole test where most existing algorithms experience an expansion in data size when dealing with very small data.

Hepatic steatosis is a defining feature of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, emerging with the increasing incidence of obesity and metabolic syndrome. The research in image-based analysis of hepatic steatosis mostly focuses on the quantification of fat in biopsy images. This work furthers the image-based analysis of hepatic steatosis by exploring the spatial characteristics of fat globules in whole slide biopsy images after performing fat detection. An algorithmbased on morphological filtering and sparse linear models is presented for fat detection. Then the spatial properties of detected fat globules in relation to the hepatic anatomical structures of central veins and portal tracts are explored. The test dataset consists of 38 high resolution images from 21 patients. The experimental results provide an insight into the size distributions of fat globules and their location with respect to the anatomical structures.

We present a compound image compression scheme based on the dictionary-based Lempel-Ziv-Markov chain algorithm (LZMA), under the framework of High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). Through matching strings from the sliding window dictionary, LZMA exploits the characteristics of the repeated patterns over the text and graphics regions of compound images, and represents them compactly. To obtain high compression efficiency even for noisy text and graphics contents, we have modified LZMA to support both lossless and lossy compression. We develop and treat it as a new intramode of HEVC. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme achieves significant coding gains for compound image compression. Thanks to the introduction of the lossy LZMA, the compression performance for noisy compound images is improved for more than 5dB in terms of PSNR in comparison with the lossless LZMA scheme.
