Application of algorithm used in Community Detection of Complex Network

A new algorithm named differential evolution algorithm for Community Detection (DEACD) was proposed in the paper. DEACD used DE as its search engine and used the network modularity as the fitness function to search for an optimal community partition of a network. In this algorithm, there is a modified binomial crossover mechanism to transmit some important information about the community structure in evolution effectively. In addition, a biased process and clean-up operation were employed in DEACD to improve the quality of the community partitions detected in evolution. Experimental results showed that DEACD has very competitive performance compared with other state-of-the-art community detection algorithms. In the process of evolution, the colony evolution was conducted under DE scheme, the network modularity was used to evaluate the fitness of individuals in the colony. The performance of DECD was analyzed by computer generated network and real-world network examples. The algorithm was implemented using matlab Genetic algorithm Optimization Toolbox (GAOT), and the parametric analysis was performed in the experiment.

In this paper, differential evolution (DE), one of the youngest paradigms in evolutionary computation, is applied to the process of synthesizing a planar array factor focused on sidelobe-level reduction. Sidelobe level is a critical array factor parameter in the task of reducing background noise and interference in the most recent Wireless Communications Systems. Minimization of sidelobe level involves nonlinear and non-convex dependence between array factor and its elements parameters becoming a highly complex problem. However, DE has proven to be a fast and efficient algorithm for complex real-valued problems. Subsequently, a binary-coded genetic algorithm is proposed for the synthesis of planar arrays. Numerical results show a promising performance ofDE reducing noticeably the sidelobe level generated by a uniform planar array. (C) 2006 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.

An evolutionary approach for worst-case tolerance design

A sliding-level orthogonal differential evolution algorithm with a two-level orthogonal array (SLODEA2OA) is proposed for solving worst-case tolerance design problems. Tolerance affects system performance and leads to violate design constraints. By including a two-level orthogonal array, the proposed SLODEA2OA obtains robust optimal solutions that minimize the impact of parameter variations and that maintain compliance with a comprehensive constraint set. Two design examples are used for performance evaluation of the SLODEA2OA. The first is a 10-variable function, which includes linear, non-linear, quadratic, and polynomial forms to illustrate its general robustness and computational efficiency. The second example is a speed reducer design that involves seven variables and multiple non-linear engineering constraints. The SLODEA2OA is also compared with sliding-level orthogonal differential evolution algorithms with either three-level orthogonal array or two-level full-factorial design. Additionally, performance comparisons confirm that the proposed SLODEA2OA outperforms nature-inspired methods presented in the literature. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

GenDocSum plus MCLR: Generic document summarization based on maximum coverage and less redundancy

With the rapid growth of information on the Internet and electronic government recently, automatic multi-document summarization has become an important task. Multi-document summarization is an optimization problem requiring simultaneous optimization of more than one objective function. In this study, when building summaries from multiple documents, we attempt to balance two objectives, content coverage and redundancy. Our goal is to investigate three fundamental aspects of the problem, i.e. designing an optimization model, solving the optimization problem and finding the solution to the best summary. We model multi-document summarization as a Quadratic Boolean Programing (QBP) problem where the objective function is a weighted combination of the content coverage and redundancy objectives. The objective function measures the possible summaries based on the identified salient sentences and overlap information between selected sentences. An innovative aspect of our model lies in its ability to remove redundancy while selecting representative sentences. The QBP problem has been solved by using a binary differential evolution algorithm. Evaluation of the model has been performed on the DUC2002, DUC2004 and DUC2006 data sets. We have evaluated our model automatically using ROUGE toolkit and reported the significance of our results through 95% confidence intervals. The experimental results show that the optimization-based approach for document summarization is truly a promising research direction. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Authentication of images for 3D cameras: Reversibly embedding information using intelligent approaches

In this work, a reversible watermarking approach for authentication of 3D cameras based on computational intelligence is presented. Two intelligent techniques based on differential evolution (DE) and hybrid DE are employed to optimize the tradeoff between watermark imperceptibility and capacity. The proposed approach is suitable for images of 3D cameras. These cameras generally work on the concept of time-of-flight and not only produce the 2D image but also generate the corresponding depth map. In this approach, the depth map is considered as secret information and is hidden in the integer wavelet transform of the corresponding 2D image. The proposed technique is prospective for authenticating 3D camera images and allows the secure transmission of its depth map. It has the advantage of the lossless recovery of original 2D image as and when needed. The watermarking of the 2D images is based on integer wavelet transform and threshold optimization. The threshold map thus obtained using the intelligent optimization approaches is not only used for watermark embedding, but is also utilized for authentication put pose by correlating it with the corresponding 2D transformed image. A Projection-Based Approach for Ultra-Low Side-Lobe Pattern Synthesis in Time-Modulated Spherical Arrays

The time-modulation approach is extended to spherical antenna arrays to synthesize ultra-low side-lobe patterns. A projection approach combined with the generalized Tseng-Cheng distributions, which generate axis-symmetric patterns in all phi-cuts for planar arrays with square lattices and boundaries, is utilized in the synthesis of time-modulated spherical arrays. Patterns with an approximately Dolph-Chebyshev profile for all phi-cuts are successfully synthesized by phase compensation using the differential evolution algorithm. Numerical results show that ultra-low side-lobes can be synthesized for time-modulated spherical arrays, with very low dynamic-range ratios, low sideband levels, and minimal reduction in directivity and efficiency.

Proposal for a multiple-asteroid-flyby mission with sample return

Asteroid exploration provides a new approach to study the formation of the solar system and the planetary evolution. Choosing a suitable target and designing of feasible profile for asteroid mission are challenging due to constraints such as scientific value and technical feasibility. This paper investigates a feasible mission scenario among the potential candidates of multiple flybys and sample return missions. First, a group of potential candidates are selected by considering the physical properties and accessibility of asteroids, for the sample return missions. Second, the feasible mission scenarios for multiple flybys and sample return missions to various spectral-type asteroids are investigated. We present the optimized design of preliminary interplanetary transfer trajectory for two kinds of missions. One is the single sample return mission to asteroids with various spectral types. The other is the multiple flybys and sample return mission to several asteroids. In order to find the optimal profiles, the planetary swing-by technique and differential evolution algorithm are used. Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to describe a design process for a drive of a ventricular assist device (VAD) under the consideration of constraints given by the application. In this case, these constraints are the possibility to implant the VAD system, providing a sufficient perfusion of the human body and cutting down development costs. Design/methodology/approach - In the described approach an optimization algorithm is integrated in the initial stage of the design process for a drive system. Findings - During simulations the optimum drive design under the implantation constraints of the given VAD system is found. The key constraints of this design, which are torque, axial force and losses, are validated during initial test bench measurements of a drive prototype. Practical implications - The described design process enables an optimum drive design from the beginning of a VAD development. This reduces the time to initial and chronic in vivo test, which are required to be approved for the market later. Therefore, this approach cuts development and device costs. Additionally, this design process can be transferred for the design of other drive concepts and applications. Originality/value - The developed and proved method in this paper enables a competitive and reliable drive design.

Analog Complex Wavelet Transform Using ACDE algorithm and SI Filters

For application requiring low voltage, low power and real time operating, approximation implementations of complex wavelet transform (CWT) in analog hardware can be achieved with sampled data circuits. A novel analog implementation of CWT using adaptive chaotic differential evolution algorithm (ACDE) and switched-current (SI) filters is presented in this paper. The quality of such implementations depends on the accuracy of the corresponding wavelet approximations, so an optimized procedure based on ACDE is applied to approximate the real and the imaginary parts of the required complex wavelet. The global optimum parameters of the designed approximation model for the respective parts of complex wavelet function are solved. Then the respective approximation functions and transfer functions of complex wavelet filters are obtained. Finally, the CWT is implemented by the analog filter banks with SI integrators as main building blocks whose impulse response is the approximation function and its extensions of the real and imaginary parts. Simulations demonstrate that the proposed method is effectively to the CWT implementation.

A comprehensive method for optimal power management and design of hybrid RES-based autonomous energy systems

The power management strategy (PMS) plays an important role in the optimum design and efficient utilization of hybrid energy systems. The power available from hybrid systems and the overall lifetime of system components are highly affected by PMS. This paper presents a novel method for the determination of the optimum PMS of hybrid energy systems including various generators and storage units. The PMS optimization is integrated with the sizing procedure of the hybrid system. The method is tested on a system with several widely used generators in off-grid systems, including wind turbines, PV panels, fuel cells, electrolyzers, hydrogen tanks, batteries, and diesel generators. The aim of the optimization problem is to simultaneously minimize the overall cost of the system, unmet load, and fuel emission considering the uncertainties associated with renewable energy sources (RES). These uncertainties are modeled by using various possible scenarios for wind speed and solar irradiation based on Weibull and Beta probability distribution functions (PDF), respectively. The differential evolution algorithm (DEA) accompanied with fuzzy technique is used to handle the mixed-integer nonlinear multi-objective optimization problem. The optimum solution, including design parameters of system components and the monthly PMS parameters adapting climatic changes during a year, are obtained. Considering operating limitations of system devices, the parameters characterize the priority and share of each storage component for serving the deficit energy or storing surplus energy both resulted from the mismatch of power between load and generation. In order to have efficient power exploitation from RES, the optimum monthly tilt angles of PV panels and the optimum tower height for wind turbines are calculated.
