Design of time modulated concentric circular and concentric hexagonal antenna array using hybrid enhanced particle swarm optimisation and differential evolution algorithm

Design of circular arrays (CAs) and hexagonal arrays (HAs) with low sidelobe level (SLL) and high directivity is usually achieved by increasing the number of array elements, which leads to a high undesired mutual coupling. Therefore this study presents an efficient optimisation method and a framework to show how to design multi-ring concentric CAs (CCA) and concentric HAs (CHAs) configurations using a hybrid enhanced particle swarm optimisation and differential evolution (hybrid EPSO/DE) optimisation technique. The presented optimum CCA and CHA have perfect invariant SLL and high directivity with low mutual coupling by keeping the inter-element spacing not less than half a wavelength which is not possible to be achieved in CA and HA arrangements. Different configurations with two-rings, three-rings and four-rings are presented. The rotation angle of outer rings and the complex excitations of array elements are first optimised. Then, this design is further optimised using a time modulation technique by controlling the switch-on times and the phases of elements excitations of the best CCA and CHA array designs. The presented time modulated (TM) concentric CA and TM concentric HA designs attain ultra-low SLL, reduced sideband level and maximised directivity besides reducing the dynamic range of the array excitations.

Optimal chiller loading by differential evolution algorithm for reducing energy consumption

This study employs differential evolution algorithm to solve the optimal chiller loading problem for reducing energy consumption. To testify the performance of the proposed method, the paper adopts two case studies to compare the results of the developed optimal model with those of the Lagrangian method, genetic algorithm and particle swarm algorithm. The result shows that the proposed differential evolution algorithm can find the optimal solution as the particle swarm algorithm can, but obtain better average solutions. Moreover, it outperforms the genetic algorithm in finding optimal solution and also overcomes the divergence problem caused by the Lagrangian method occurring at low demands. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. Optimal components selection for active filter design with average differential evolution algorithm

Component selection in electronic circuit design is an important issue to achieve a targeted performance and quality level. Particularly in filter circuits, changes in gain and phase response of the circuit are directly dependent on the component values of the filter. Therefore, the selection of component values must be done carefully. In this article, a differential evolution (DE) algorithm with a new mutation strategy, named as average DE (ADE), is introduced for analog active filter design. The ADE algorithm minimizes the total design error of the state variable filter (SVF) for the optimal selection of component values. Simulation results indicate that the proposed algorithm reduces the design error when compared to other methods.

Parameter estimation for chaotic systems by hybrid differential evolution algorithm and artificial bee colony algorithm

This paper is concerned with the parameter estimation of nonlinear chaotic system, which could be essentially formulated as a multi-dimensional optimization problem. In this paper, a hybrid algorithm by combining differential evolution with artificial bee colony is implemented to solve parameter estimation for chaotic systems. Hybrid algorithm combines the exploration of differential evolution with the exploitation of the artificial bee colony effectively. Experiments have been conducted on Lorenz system and Chen system. The proposed algorithm is applied to estimate the parameters of two chaotic systems. Simulation results and comparisons demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is better or at least comparable to differential evolution, artificial bee colony, particle swarm optimization, and genetic algorithm from literature when considering the quality of the solutions obtained.

RLC circuit extraction with the differential evolution algorithm for conducted electromagnetic emission model of integrated circuits

This paper examines the modeling of conducted electromagnetic emissions of integrated circuits. In this study, test circuits were designed and printed circuit boards were prepared to measure the input impedance at the power supply pin of the microcontroller. After S-parameter measurements of the test circuit were performed in a frequency range of 10 MHz to 2 GHz, Z-parameters were obtained via S-parameters. Next, the impedance frequency curve of the test circuit's power supply pin, which consists of a microcontroller core, printed circuit board, conductive trace, and SMA connector global impedances, was obtained. Therefore, all the traces, printed circuit board, and SMA connector impedance effects were eliminated with the deembedding technique. After all other impedance effects were deleted with the deembedding technique, the input impedance at the power supply pin of the microcontroller was obtained and shown with impedance frequency characteristics. The passive (RLC) circuit was modeled from this curve and the results were compared to the measurements. The differential evolution algorithm was used to extract the optimal RLC passive elements. Finally, sensitivity analyses were successfully performed to ensure the accuracy of the extracted circuit.

A novel modified bat algorithm hybridizing by differential evolution algorithm

The bat algorithm (BA) is one of the metaheuristic algorithms that are used to solve optimization problems. The differential evolution (DE) algorithm is also applied to optimization problems and has successful exploitation ability. In this study, an advanced modified BA (MBA) algorithm was initially proposed by making some modifications to improve the exploration and exploitation abilities of the BA. A hybrid system (MBADE), involving the use of the MBA in conjunction with the DE, was then suggested in order to further improve the exploitation potential and provide superior performance in various test problem clusters. The proposed hybrid system uses a common population, and the algorithm to be applied to the individual is selected on the basis of a probability value, which is calculated in accordance with the performance of the algorithms;thus, the probability of applying a successful algorithm is increased. The performance of the proposed method was tested on functions that have frequently been studied, such as classical benchmark functions, small-scale CEC 2005 benchmark functions, large-scale CEC 2010 benchmark functions, and CEC 2011 real-world problems. The obtained results were compared with the results obtained from the standard BA and other findings in the literature and interpreted by means of statistical tests. The developed hybrid system showed superior performance to the standard BA in all test problem sets and produced more acceptable results when compared to the published data for the existing algorithms. In addition, the contribution of the MBA and DE algorithms to the hybrid system was examined. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Input/output system identification of simultaneous mass/stiffness damage assessment using discrete-time pulse responses, differential evolution algorithm, and equivalent virtual damped SDOF

This paper describes a new approach for simultaneous assessment of the extent of massstiffness damages in aerospace structures. Before and after a damage occurrence, we used some system digital pulse response data related to a selected number of collocated sensoractuator DOFs to assess the extent of damage that occurred in a structure. Using method, we can identify an equivalent virtual damped SDOF (EVDSDOF) system through the pulse responses extracted from the instrumented DOFs. After a damage occurrence, monitoring changes, in mass and stiffness properties of a structure, results in identifying the type and size of that damage. The differential evolution algorithm is used as an intelligent optimizer. It performs a curve fitting operation by introducing an EVDSDOF system, replacing the dynamical responses generated by the monitored DOF. Because most of researches for damage assessment identify only the stiffness damages and assume that there is no mass reduction in the in-flight test data of aerospace structures, this new approach can be applied to structures subjected to both mass and stiffness damages. Neighborhood-based differential evolution algorithm with direction induced strategy for the large-scale combined heat and power economic dispatch problem

The combined heat and power economic dispatch (CHPED) problem is a complicated non -convex optimization problem with several constraints that has been a challenging and important task in the power system. Great efforts have been made to solve the small-scale CHPED problem, and there is considerable scope for research in the large-scale CHPED problem with lots of local optima. This paper presents a neighborhood-based differ-ential evolution algorithm with direction induced strategy (NDIDE) to solve the large-scale CHPED problem. In NDIDE, a novel mutation strategy, named neighborhood nonelite direc-tion induced strategy based on DE/rand/1 (DE/ldrand/1), is proposed to explore some untrodden areas of a search space using the direction information of pointing to inferior solutions within a small neighborhood. Such a strategy helps to strengthen the exploitation of some selected neighborhoods. Consequently, a good balance between exploration and exploitation abilities could be achieved. NDIDE is implemented on the CHPED systems with 7, 84, 96 and 192 units. The dispatch schedules obtained from NDIDE are feasible in three large CHPED systems and show the advantages of NDIDE in terms of cost savings and the robustness over the results obtained by three state-of-the-art differential evolution algo-rithms as well as recent works in this field. System identification using Hammerstein model optimized with differential evolution algorithm

This paper aims to improve Hammerstein model for system identification area. Hammerstein model block structure is formed by cascade of linear and nonlinear parts. In literature, memoryless polynomial nonlinear (MPN) model for nonlinear part and finite impulse response (FIR) model or infinite impulse response (IIR) model for linear part are mostly preferred for Hammerstein models. In this study, a Hammerstein model is presented which is obtained by cascade form of a nonlinear second order volterra (SOV) and a linear FIR model. In addition, proposed Hammerstein model is optimized with differential evolution algorithm (DEA). In simulations, different types of systems are identified by proposed Hammerstein model. Also, performance of the proposed model is compared with different model performances. In conclusion it can be said that the main benefit of this study is that simulation results reveal the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed model. (C) 2016 Elsevier GmbH. Novel Formulations and Improved differential evolution algorithm for Optimal Lane Reservation With Task Merging

This paper investigates a new lane reservation problem with task merging that consists of optimally determining which lanes in a transportation network have to be reserved and designing reserved lane-based routes in the network for time-crucial transport tasks. Part of the tasks whose destinations are geographically close is merged to reduce the number of vehicles and transport costs. Reserved lanes can reduce the travel time of task vehicles passing through them, while they will generate negative impact on normal traffic, such as traffic delay to the vehicles on adjacent non-reserved lanes. The objective is to minimize the total negative impact of all reserved lanes. For this problem, two new integer linear programming (ILP) models are first developed. The complexity of the problem is proved to be NP-hard. Since commercial solver (like CPLEX) is time-consuming for solving it when the problem size increases, a fast and effective improved differential evolution algorithm (IDEA) is developed based on explored problem properties. Extensive experimental results for a real-life case and benchmark instances of up to 500 nodes in the network and 30 transport tasks show the favorable performance of the IDEA, as compared to CPLEX, differential evolution algorithm and genetic algorithm. Management insights are also drawn to support practical decision-making.
