In this paper, a new variant of harmony search algorithm called self-adaptive differential harmony search (SADHS) algorithm is proposed to solve the combined economic emission dispatch (CEED) problems. The proposed algorithm is tested on 6- and 40 unit test systems to show the effectiveness. The simulation results obtained by the proposed algorithm are compared with the results of differential harmony search (DHS) algorithm. The results obtained by the proposed algorithm are found to be better than DHS algorithm in terms of quality of solution, speed of convergence and CPU time.

A new variant of harmony search algorithm called self-adaptive differential harmony search (SADHS) algorithm is proposed in this paper to solve the optimal power flow (OPF) problem with emission minimization. The primary objective of OPF with emission minimization is to determine the optimal generation cost at the same time reducing the emission level and satisfying the system constraints. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, it is applied on IEEE-30 bus system with and without valve point effects. The simulation results obtained by the proposed algorithm are compared with the results of DHS algorithm. The results obtained by the proposed algorithm are found to be better than DHS algorithm in terms of solution quality, speed of convergence and CPU time.

In this paper, a new algorithm called Self-Adaptive differential harmony search (SADHS) algorithm is proposed to solve the dynamic economic and emission dispatch (DEED) problem with security constraints. The searching ability of the proposed algorithm is improved by introducing a self-adaptive method to change the value of mutation constant during run of the algorithm. To show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, it is tested on IEEE-30 bus test system with valve point effects, ramp rate limits, prohibited operating zones, and security constraints. The result obtained by the proposed SADHS algorithm is compared with differential harmony search (DHS) algorithm. The result obtained by the proposed algorithm is found to be better than DHS algorithm in terms of solution quality, convergence speed and computational time.

In this paper, the nonlinear optimal control problem is formulated as a multi-objective mathematical optimization problem. harmony search (HS) algorithm is one of the new heuristic algorithms. The differential harmony search (DHS) optimization algorithm is introduced for the first time in solving the optimal power flow(OPF) solution. A case on optimal power flow problem in the IEEE 30 bus system is presented to show the methodology's feasibility and efficiency, compared with the existing optimal power flow problem in power system methods, the search time of the DHS optimization algorithm is shorter and the result is close to the ideal solution, simultaneously.

The objective of this work is to develop a core loading optimization technique using differential harmony search algorithm in the context of obtaining an optimal configuration of fuel assemblies in pressurized water reactors. To implement and evaluate the proposed technique, differential harmony search nodal expansion package for 2-D geometry, DHSNEP-2D, is developed. The package includes two modules;in the first modules differential harmony search (DHS) is implemented and nodal expansion code which solves two dimensional-multi group neutron diffusion equations using fourth degree flux expansion with one node per a fuel assembly is in the second module. For evaluation of DHS algorithm, classical harmony search (HS) and global-best harmony search (GHS) algorithms are also included in DHSNEP-2D in order to compare the outcome of techniques together. For this purpose, two PWR test cases have been investigated to demonstrate the DHS algorithm capability in obtaining near optimal loading pattern. Results show that the convergence rate of DHS and execution times are quite promising and also is reliable for the fuel management operation. Moreover, numerical results show the good performance of DHS relative to other competitive algorithms such as genetic algorithm (GA), classical harmony search (HS) and global-best harmony search (GHS) algorithms. Optimal power flow is the basic tool that allows an electric utility to determine the economic and secure operating conditions of an electric power system. This article presents a chaotic self-adaptive differential harmony search algorithm to solve optimal power flow problems with non-smooth and non-convex cost functions. The searching capacity of the proposed chaotic self-adaptive differential harmony search algorithm has been improved by introducing a chaotic self-adaptive differential mutation operator instead of a pitch adjustment operator in the harmony search algorithm. The effectiveness of the proposed chaotic self-adaptive differential harmony search algorithm has been tested with IEEE 30-bus, IEEE 300-bus, and 66-bus Indian utility systems. The simulation results obtained using the proposed algorithm are compared with other variants of the improved harmony search algorithm, such as the differential harmony search algorithm, the chaotic differential harmony search algorithm, the interior point method, and other techniques reported in the literature, to show its effectiveness. The results obtained by the proposed algorithm are found to be better than the results obtained by the differential harmony search, chaotic differential harmony search, interior point method, and other algorithms reported in the literature in terms of solution quality and standard deviation of generation cost. In terms of speed of convergence and computational time, the proposed algorithm is better than the differential harmony search and chaotic differential harmony search algorithms.

Dynamic economic dispatch (DED) is one of the main optimization problems in electrical power system operation and control. DED problem is a non-smooth and non-convex problem when valve point effect, ramp-rate limits and prohibited operating zones of generation units are taken into account. This paper proposes an efficient chaotic self-adaptive differential harmony search (CSADHS) algorithm to solve the complicated DED problem in the presence of valve point effect, ramp-rate limits and prohibited operating zones constraints. In the proposed algorithm, chaotic self-adaptive differential mutation operator is used instead of pitch adjustment operator in the harmony search (HS) algorithm, to enhance the searching performance to find the quality solution. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated on 10, 15 and 30 unit systems for a period of 24 h. The simulation results obtained by the proposed algorithm are compared with the results obtained, using differential harmony search (DHS) algorithm, chaotic differential harmony search (CDHS) algorithm, and also with the results of other methods available in the literature. In terms of solution quality, the proposed algorithm is found to be better than other algorithms and in terms of speed of convergence, standard deviation of generation cost, and computational time, the proposed algorithm is better than DHS and CDHS algorithm. This paper proposes an efficient chaotic differential harmony search (CDHS) algorithm to solve the dynamic economic and emission dispatch (DEED) problem with security constraints. The main objective of DEED problem is to determine the optimal power generation schedule for the online generating units over a time horizon at the same time satisfying the environmental and security constraints along with other generator constraints. The DEED problem is formulated as a nonlinear constrained multi-objective optimization problem. The fuel cost and emission are considered as two competing objectives. It is converted into a single objective function by introducing a price penalty factor. The price penalty factor blends the emission with the fuel cost. In the proposed algorithm, chaotic variables are introduced instead of random number generator in the differential mutation operator of differential harmony search (DHS) algorithm to accelerate the DHS algorithm to reach the global optimal solution quickly. The effectiveness of the proposed CDHS algorithm is demonstrated on IEEE-30 bus system with valve point effects, ramp rate limits, prohibited operating zones, and security constraints for a period of 24 hours. The simulation results obtained by the proposed CDHS algorithm are compared with DHS algorithm. The optimal solution obtained by the proposed algorithm is better than DHS algorithm in terms of solution quality, speed of convergence and computational time.
