In this paper, new parameterized differential pulse-code modulation interpolator is proposed. It uses the correspondence of signal samples in the processed sample vicinity to select the interpolation method. Interpolation error of proposed interpolator is minimized during the optimization procedure. Before the optimization, the parameter range dimension is reduced in order to lower the computational complexity. Experimental research shows that proposed interpolator outperforms the non-parameterized one

An object wave is a suitable intermediate representation format for transmitting holographic application data because it is compatible with various playback devices. However, compressing the phase component of the object wave presents challenges due to its unique signal characteristics, i.e., periodicity and randomness. Hence, object waves significantly differ from ordinary 2D images such as camera-captured and screen pictures. To overcome the challenges, we propose a conversion method for lossless phase image coding using differential pulse-code modulation. Specifically, we calculate phase differences using adjacent pixels in two directions, considering periodic cycles of 2π, and then input them into the existing image coding. This method ensures robustness against randomness by smoothing the phase difference using the average of adjacent pixels. Experimental results show that lossless phase coding with the proposed conversion method achieves coding efficiency improvements of 6.50 % over lossless phase coding without the proposed method. © 2025 IEEE.

Sampling above the Nyquist rate is at the heart of sigma-delta modulation, where the increase in sampling rate is translated to a reduction in the overall (mean-squared-error) reconstruction distortion. This is attained by using a feedback filter at the encoder, in conjunction with a low-pass filter at the decoder. The goal of this paper is to characterize the optimal trade-off between the per-sample quantization rate and the resulting mean-squared-error distortion under various restrictions on the feedback filter. To this end, we establish a duality relation between the performance of sigma-delta modulation and the performance of differential pulse-code modulation when applied to (discrete-time) band-limited inputs. As the optimal trade-off for the latter scheme is fully understood, the full characterization for sigma-delta modulation, as well as the optimal feedback filters, immediately follows.

CMOS Imager With Focal-Plane Analog Image Compression Combining DPCM and VQ

CMOS imagers, in comparison to CCD image sensors, have the great advantage of allowing for the implementation of signal processing circuitry inside the pixel matrix. We can extract information of interest from an image prior to analog-to-digital conversion. In this work, we present a 32 x 32 imaging integrated circuit that captures and compresses gray scale images on the focal plane of the image sensor using analog circuits that implement, for every 4 x 4 pixel block, differential pulse-code modulation, linear transform, and vector quantization. Theoretical details and circuit design are carefully described, as well as the test setup and details of the chip that was fabricated in a 0.35 mu m CMOS technology. To validate the technique, we present tests and experimental results including overall modulation transfer function and photographs captured by the chip. The CMOS imager features focal-plane data compression based on DPCM and VQ with bit rate below 0.94 bpp and peak signal-to-noise ratio values around 18 dB. The overall power consumption is 37 mW (white image), which is equivalent to approximately 36 mu W per pixel. Using photographs taken from bar-target pattern inputs, it is shown that details up to 2 cycles/cm are preserved in the decoded images.

Improved Upper Bounds to the Causal Quadratic Rate-Distortion Function for Gaussian Stationary Sources

We improve the existing achievable rate regions for causal and for zero-delay source coding of stationary Gaussian sources under an average mean squared error distortion measure. To begin with, we find a closed-form expression for the information-theoretic causal rate-distortion function (RDF) under such distortion measure, denoted by R-c(it)(D), for first-order Gauss-Markov processes. R-c(it)(D) is a lower bound to the optimal performance theoretically attainable (OPTA) by any causal source code, namely R-c(it)(D). We show that, for Gaussian sources, the latter can also be upper bounded as R-c(op)(D) <= R-c(it)(D) + 0.5 log(2) (2 pi e) bits/sample. In order to analyze R-c(it)(D) for arbitrary zero-mean Gaussian stationary sources, we introduce <(R-c(it))over bar>(D), the information-theoretic causal RDF when the reconstruction error is jointly stationary with the source. Based upon <(R-c(it))over bar>(D), we derive three closed-form upper bounds to the additive rate loss defined as <(R-c(it))over bar>(D) - R(D), where R(D) denotes Shannon's RDF. Two of these bounds are strictly smaller than 0.5 bits/sample at all rates. These bounds differ from one another in their tightness and ease of evaluation;the tighter the bound, the more involved its evaluation. We then show that, for any source spectral density and any positive distortion D <= sigma(2)(x), <(R-c(it))over bar>(D) can be realized by an additive white Gaussian noise channel surrounded by a unique set of causal pre-, post-, and feedback filters. We show that finding such filters constitutes a convex optimization problem. In order to solve the latter, we propose an iterative optimization procedure that yields the optimal filters and is guaranteed to converge to <(R-c(it))over bar>(D). Finally, by establishing a connection to feedback quantization, we design a causal and a zero-delay coding scheme which, for Gaussian sources, achieves an operational rate lower than <(R-c(it))over bar>(D) + 0.254 and <(R-c(it))ov

This article is proposed to develop a method of the synthesis of the prediction filter based on the multidimensional linear extrapolation to improve the accuracy of the pixel value prediction, as well as to assess the effectiveness of the proposed predictive filters depending on the prediction step and the dimension of training vectors to minimize the prediction error and the entropy of the differential signal. The article contain a solution of the special cases for a number of elements of the vector prediction, statistical dependence of the vector dimension and prediction filter order from the mean square error and the entropy of the differential signal are determined. Optimal prediction step is founded based on the experimental data and all the results are being analyzed.

In this paper we consider the problem of designing coding and decoding schemes for linear control design of a scalar unstable stochastic linear system in the presence of a wireless communication channel between the sensor and the estimator. In particular, we consider a communication channel which is prone to packet loss and includes quantization noise due to its limited capacity. We first study the case of perfect channel feedback, where the transmitter is aware of the quantization noise and the packet loss history of the channel. We show that in this case, the optimal strategy among all possible linear encoders corresponds to the transmission of the Kalman filter innovation (the difference between the filtered state estimate at the transmitter and the predicted state estimate at the receiver) similarly to the differential pulse-code modulation (DPCM). Although the critical Signal-to-Quantization Noise Ratio (SQNR) required for stabilizing the system is the same for innovation forwarding as well as measurement forwarding at the transmitter, the latter is strictly suboptimal in terms of control performance. For the case of imperfect feedback, we assume that the channel feedback or acknowledgement is randomly lost with a certain erasure probability, rendering the transmitter ignorant of the control action taken by the receiver and subsequently applied to the plant. We propose several heuristic strategies for a suboptimal Kalman filter design at the transmitter based on estimation of the channel feedback status and compare their performances via numerical simulation studies.

Analysis of the impact of data compression on condition monitoring algorithms for ball screws

The overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) is a management ratio to evaluate the added value of machine tools. Unplanned machine downtime reduces the operational availability and therefore, the OEE. Increased machine costs are the consequence. An important cause of unplanned machine downtimes is the total failure of ball screws of the feed axes due to wear. Therefore, monitoring of the condition of ball screws is important. Common concepts rely on high-frequency acceleration sensors from external control systems to detect a change of the condition. For trend and detailed damage analysis, large amounts of data are generated and stored over a long time period (>5 years), resulting in corresponding data storage costs. Additional axes or machine tools increase the data volume further, adding to the total storage costs. To minimize these costs, data compression or source coding has to be applied. To achieve maximum compression ratios, lossy coding algorithms have to be used, which introduce distortion in a signal. In this work, the influence of lossy coding algorithms on a condition monitoring algorithm (CMA) using acceleration signals is investigated. The CMA is based on principal component analysis and uses 17 features such as standard deviation to predict the preload condition of a ball screw. It is shown that bit rate reduction through lossy compression algorithms is possible without affecting the condition monitoring - as long as the compression algorithm is known. In contrast, an unknown compression algorithm reduces the classification accuracy of condition monitoring by about 20 % when coding with a quantizer resolution of 4 bit/sample.
