In this paper, a novel differential search algorithm (DSA) approach is proposed to solve multiobjective optimization problems, called Multiobjective differential search algorithm (MODSA). MODSA utilizes the concept of Pareto dominance to determine the direction of a super-organism and it maintains non-dominated solutions in the external repository. This approach also uses the external repository of super-organisms that is used to guide other super-organisms. It guides the artificial organisms to search towards non-crowding and external regions of Pareto front. The performance of proposed approach is evaluated against the other well-known multiobjective optimization algorithms over a set of multiobjective benchmark test functions. Experimental results reveal that the MODSA outperforms the other competitive algorithms for benchmark test functions.

In the paper, differential search algorithm (DSA) was proposed and used to solve the optimal power flow (OPF) problem of power system. DSA has a special search mechanism which is different from other intelligent optimization algorithms: its search motion is not completely guided by the optimal solution and its optimization process is simple and efficient. So it is very suitable for dealing with large-scale complex nonlinear OPF of power system. This paper establishes a multi-objective OPF model, taking into account the economic and environmental factors simultaneously. And the fuzzy weighted evaluation method is introduced to turn the multiple objective problem into a single objective problem, and coordinated optimization between two objectives is realized. The proposed DSA is applied to computing the optimal power flow of the standard IEEE30 bus system. By comparing with the GA and PSO algorithms, we find that the proposed DSA has higher solution quality and convergence stability.

This paper proposes differential search algorithm (DS) to solve optimization problem of radial distribution system reliability with distributed generation being present in the system as standby unit. DS algorithm simulates the seasonal migration behavior of many organisms which migrate from one habitat to a more efficient one in terms of availability of food. Here, optimum failure rate and repair time of feeder segments have been calculated in order to enhance reliability of radial distribution system. The proposed method has been applied to a test case and compared with differential evolution (DE) technique. Simulation results reveal that the proposed approach performs better in terms of quality of solution obtained and computational efficiency as applied to optimize failure rate and repair time of radial distribution network with distributed generation.

In this article, quasi-oppositional differential search algorithm (QODSA) is proposed for finding an optimal and effective solution for load frequency control (LFC) problem in the power system. Initially, original DSA is employed for fine-tuning of the secondary controller of LFC system and then, quasi-oppositional based learning (Q-OBL) mechanism is integrated into the original DSA to enhance the convergence speed and to find a better solution of LFC problem. To validate the effectiveness of proposed QODSA, four widely used interconnected power system networks are designed and analyzed. The superiority of the proposed method is established by an extensive comparative analysis with other existing evolutionary algorithm's (EA) using transient analysis method. A critical investigation of simulation results reveals that the proposed QODSA gives simple and better solution compared to original DSA and other reported algorithms. To study the robustness of QODSA, two different random load patterns are projected and results confirm the robustness of the designed controllers. To add some degree of nonlinearity, generation rate constraint and governor dead band effects are considered and their consequence on the system dynamics has been examined. An adequate integration of demand response programs requires the definition of distinct models covering a wide diversity of operation scenarios. In this paper, the proposed methodology addresses the definition of demand response programs considering the demand shifting between periods, in scenarios of multi-period demand response events. The optimization problem refers to the minimization of the operation costs for a Virtual Power Player in the energy resources schedule. differential search algorithm has been used in order to obtain the solutions for the optimization problem in a large set of operation scenarios. The case study illustrates the use of the proposed methodology to support the decisions concerning the duration of each demand response event and considering the consumption shifting modeling as constraints of the optimization problem.

The number of dispersed energy resources is growing every day, such as the use of more distributed generators. This paper deals with energy resource scheduling model in future smart grids. The methodology can be used by virtual power players (VPPs) considering day-ahead time horizon. This method considers that energy resources are managed by a VPP which establishes contracts with their owners. The full AC power flow calculation included in the model takes into account network constraints. This paper presents an application of differential search algorithm (DSA) for solving the day-ahead scheduling. DSA method is used to minimize the operation costs for the VPP providing in satisfactory execution time. Two scenarios are presented using a 33-bus distribution network, large wind farm and several distributed energy resources to illustrate the proposed methodology. These scenarios consider a contingency on the large wind farm and different forecasts regarding load demand.

This paper presents an optimization approach based differential search algorithm (DSA) for amplitude and phase estimation of time varying power signal in electrical power systems. Proposed method has been tested for two well-known literature problems that include fundamental, sub-and inter-harmonic estimation cases. The performance of the suggested DSA method has been compared with those of the Genetic algorithm-Least Square (GA-LS), Particle swarm optimization with passive congregation least square (PSOPC-LS), Bacterial foraging optimization (BFO), Fuzzy bacterial foraging-least square (F-BFO-LS) and Bacterial foraging optimization-recursive least square (BFO-RLS). The results show that the proposed DSA method has an efficient, fast and accurate estimation behavior among previously reported ones in the case of time varying harmonic power signals. In addition, the estimated amplitude and phase values using DSA method can provide possibility to design suitable harmonic reducing filter for improving power quality.

Image registration is the process of overlaying images of the same scene taken at different times, from different viewpoints, and/or by different sensors. Intensity-based image registration is considered to be a process of optimizing registration parameters of the similarity measure while different optimization methods are used to improve this process. differential search algorithm (DSA) is a new nature-inspired optimization method with superiority at avoiding falling into local extremum. We studied the structure of DSA and applied it to the normalized mutual information-based image rigid registration. Experiments showed that compared with Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), DSA always found the optimal solution and obtained stable results when registering different spatial transformations.

Region based multi-spectral fusion method for remote sensing images using differential search algorithm and IHS transform

Remote sensing applications such as clustering, classification, feature extraction, measurement and change detection need fused high-resolution images that contain complementary information coming from multispectral bands. To transfer as much information as possible from source images to the fused image, image fusion can be considered as an optimization problem. In this paper, a new, two-stage, multi-spectral, region based, optimal fusion method is proposed. Panchromatic and infrared bands of Landsat 8 satellite images are fused with K-medoids segmentation and differential search algorithm (DSA). The fused image is combined with the red, green, and blue (RGB) bands of the same area with intensity-hue-saturation (IHS) transform. Experiments carried out on test images indicate that developed method performed better than most of the state-of-theart fusion techniques in terms of both visual and numerical evaluations.
