Fault levels are continuously changing in the electric networks due to change in the network impendences and configurations. These changes causes maloperation of the over current relays. An over current relay coordination algorithm is proposed in this paper, which utilizes adaptive fuzzy technique to select the optimal relay settings. This is achieved in two phases. In phase-1 of proposed algorithm, the relay settings are obtained for all possible network topologies. In phase-2 of proposed algorithm, the network topology is identified by sensing the circuit breaker status. Line impendence change is estimated by measuring the change in the power flow on a series compensated line. Therefore phase-2 is an online process. Based on the prevailing network configuration and fault level, the corresponding optimized relay settings are selected using adaptive fuzzy technique. Then these settings are communicated to the over current relays in the network for coordinated operation of over current relays.

In general, significant energy savings can be obtained by optimizing chiller operation and design in heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems. In this paper, partial load ratio (PLR) of the chiller is used as parameters to be optimized where the power consumption in kW is used as objective function to be minimized. Energy resources management is an important topic in the context of Smart Grids (SG) and MicroGrids (MG). Virtual Power Players (VPP) emerge as aggregator entities responsible for managing energy resources in SG and MG. In this paper modern meta-heuristics are compared with their hybrid version that uses a deterministic method as initial solution. The meta-heuristics implemented are differential search algorithm (DSA) and Quantum Particle Swarm Optimization (QPSO) to solve the hard combinatorial scheduling problem. The deterministic method employs a relaxation of the non-convex Mixed Integer Non-Linear Programming (MINLP) formulation in order to reduce the computational burden and the number of iterations in meta-heuristics. The implemented methods are tested with a 33-bus distribution network, 1800 Electric Vehicles (EV), 15 fixed storage, 66 Distributed Generation (DG), 10 energy suppliers and 1 utility-scale wind generation facility. The results show the excellent performance of the DSA, QPSO and hybrid approaches.
